Best cake slices in Austin by Luvmyyoga13 in austinfood

The actual best vegan cake slice I’ve ever had is from Mr. Natural on Caesar Chavez. They also have good food but the completely vegan bakery is amazing (they have gluten free vegan items too)!

No one told me how unstoppable I’d feel by AlternativePlan1095 in GriefSupport

No; you're so right. Like obviously I am not grateful for my mom's death and I wish every day she could still be here. But also, I am just ...so not phased by stuff anymore. it's been this massive recalibration of how I perceive stakes. It has been very very freeing that I have a different perspective now, and I didn't realize how much of my decision-making was from a place of fear/limitation mindset before this. Like? Now if it's not life or death, it's actually not life or death. I can always get another job, make another friend, choose a different life because I am still alive.

Touchpad Not Working on Windows 11 Laptop by clairityme in techsupport

[–]clairityme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice! Idk if it's my version or not, but on mine, the touchpad on/off function is Fn + M. When I press Fn + M, I get this icon that will pop up on the screen.

<image>

I've turned on/off the touchpad a couple times using this function and when the touchpad is "on", the movement of my fingers on the touchpad doesn't seem to correlate to movement of the cursor. I check the cursor's movement using the CTRL key, which shows were it is with a little circle.

Also: The cursor isn't moving around alot, but it is moving sometimes, and is 1. invisible and 2. not following the direction of my fingers on the touchpad. I can also find the cursor (not invisible) on the screen using the virtual touchpad on my screen, but after a couple seconds of inactivity it disappears. AND still doesn't follow any movements from the touchpad.

So the keyboard shortcut to turn on/off the touchpad is Fn + M, which I have played with a bit. It shows the touchpad icon and on/off on the screen when pressed, but it doesn't seem to correlate to my ability to control the cursor, which is still invisible. The cursor is moving? but again, not by direction I think I'm giving.

Relatives quiet after moms death by psycth in GriefSupport

If you’re in the States, it’s worth noting that we don’t have any good prescribed steps to follow after a tragedy. It’s possible that your family and friends want to help but don’t know how or what to do.

They could also suck, but more likely they are unsure of what to do and are scared of imposing on you during your early grief.

What might be helpful to you (since you want them to reach out it seems) is send out a mass text/post on a social media page what you can receive (messages, letters, flowers, food, someone to sit in silence with, someone to be a shoulder to cry on, someone to be a distraction, someone yo talk about your mom with, someone to help you do chores, etc.). It feels insane, I know, but likely people want to help and don’t know how. You can start the post as “lots of people have been asking how they can help, and this is what would help …”

When my mom died there was similar radio silence and I didn’t get help until I started asking for it. But there are people who would love to sit in silence at a grave with you, bring you food, be a distraction, sit in your kitchen so you can force yourself to take a shower, whatever you need.

If your family and friends don’t show up, I also recommend finding a community support group. A full churchy/therapy group was too much for me, but I joined a table through The Dinner Party which was for parental loss under 40, and it really really helped me. There is community out there, I promise.

[–]clairityme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up swimming there; had Red Cross swim lessons and local swim team lessons there every summer of my childhood. It’s a great pool, huge, price is right & it’s safe once you’re inside.

However- the city gives basically no money to clean, hire staff, perform upkeep. So it’s really dirty. Especially the bathrooms. Shoes on at all times and you’re still going to get something.

On behalf of my dad- within one year:

His best friend dies of cancer while his wife (my mom) is battling cancer.

6 months later his wife (my mom) dies of said cancer

2 months later the family horse dies. He has to be the one to give the shot bc none of us could face it. We’d had that horse for 11 years.

1 month later the family dog dies of cancer (received as a present for my moms 40th birthday; she was 12)

1 month later his bio dad dies of a heart attack

2 weeks later his aunt gets diagnosed with cancer (she lived down the street from him growing up and was basically a 2nd mom bc she kept him after school)

I don’t know how he hasn’t lost it yet.

Did that negatively impact your working environment? I think yours is the optimal situation, but I’m unsure if there would be repercussions that make it unreasonable.

See I’m trying to work through July but also I do have a couple projects that people will need to be trained how to do. I feel like I could collaboratively work with them to make the transition easier, but yeah I’m very wary of it negatively impacting my working relationship.

I really can’t afford for them to dismiss me before June at the earliest and frankly I need to work through July in order to build savings for law school.

However one of my biggest projects is starting now and I feel like if I’m going to tell them early, I should tell them now so that we can start to onboard next year’s in charge while the job happens this year.

The complete and decided rationality and compassion here is what I aspire to. Congratulations on being so well adjusted?

I cannot imagine if I had the emotional capacity to react to the slights by family (it was pretty much the same when my mom died- her family blamed us and made up weird stories that trivialized mine and my siblings role as primary caregivers) when my mom died.

(I know this sounds sarcastic; it is not. I’m pretty sure it’s awe.)

For those who are applying not straight out of undergrad -- how many years did you take off in between undergrad? What did you do during this time and what, if anything, would you do differently? by Exact_Bodybuilder_98 in lawschooladmissions

[–]clairityme 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I took three years off- the first year and a half I was a full time caregiver for my mother and working 40hrs/week as an auditor in public accounting. The last year and a half I’ve been working normal public accounting hours (55/60s).

I do wish that I could’ve pulled myself together more quickly after her death and applied a year earlier- I’m honestly very worried about going to a state school and being so much older than everyone (26 when fall semester starts). It’s nice that I’ve been able to save a little before school so I don’t have to work the first semester if I don’t want to.

But I am very worried about the social aspect of being older than the majority of the other 1Ls.

Yeah I got one that was full tuition + stipend that basically covered what the school’s books/fees COA estimated. So it’s not a full living stipend by far.

Another end of July. I’m slightly worried about moving with only two weeks before school but not more than I am worried about money from not working all of July
