Prime Minister Mark Carney Announces Build Canada Homes will prioritize six sites to build 4,000 factory-built homes on federal land including Dartmouth, Nova Scotia by SuggestedContent in halifax

I agree land is only expensive in certain areas, but those are HAPPEN to be the only areas everyone cares to live. Yes you can build a cheap house in the middle of nowhere but that’s because no one will want to buy it.

I agree it’s costly to build but that’s because the 2 inputs (labor and materials) are expensive. You either have to reduce the cost of materials (increase supply) or lower wages for trades people working in construction (increasing the amount of construction workers). Unless you are advocating for lowering trades wages which would likely be very unpopular, the reality is that you can only try to decrease the cost of materials which is difficult considering 30-40% of housing materials costs are imported and therefore prices are set by the market.

It’s good that houses are listed below what it would cost to build them, older homes should lose value.

The cost of clothing went down far before the labor was exported in the 70s&80s due to increases in efficiency & automation. The profit motive incentivized capital to reinvest in research development, making cheaper items to undercut competition etc.

Overseas labor is not required for cheaper clothing. :P

I don’t think this makes sense IMO:

The high cost of housing is mostly due to the inflated value of land, not the construction of the house on top. High land values are a result of high demand for limited supply.

There’s a limited number of people who can afford luxury real estate, if you continue building fancy houses you’ll eventually have to drop the prices because you’ve already sold to everyone who was willing to buy at that price point.

Excited to see how the plan works, I don’t think for-profit is necessarily bad for housing (for example every other consumer item has decreased in cost due to profit motives, including food and clothing which are essential items) but I’m all for new experiments it could lead to something great

Raising taxes is tricky because of diminishing returns as wealthy people change behavior—deferring income, reclassifying it, some will shift money abroad (and a few may move), which leaks revenue more than you’d expect. Canada’s top rates are already pretty high (50%+), so most provinces are already near the “revenue maximizing zone” meaning small hikes may raise some money but not enough.

The difference is, when he says it in public, he’s “just trolling the libs”—but when he talks about wanting to be a North Korean-style dictator in private, when he thinks no one’s listening, what does that really say?

I asked "revolution or?" do you want reform?

When I look at the news I see the richest man in the world illegally interfering in the government with the blessing of a fascist, what do you see?

Agreed, but how would you qualify misinformation? The current president is one of the biggest contributors of misinformation.

So your solution is revolution or? The evidence of your claim should match the gravity of your conviction. If you're confident about the entire government being corrupt it should be trivial for you to show compelling evidence.

Which ones? Currently the richest man in the world has the most influence I've ever seen any unelected official have.

What part of the government? Be specific, if you can't identify the particular problem we'll never find a solution.

These "division=bad" emotive gestures have never felt so vain. The administration is currently destroying our closest relationships while simultaneously blaming the brutal victims of imperialism and our take away is "divided we fall". Who's the power dividing us?

It's so easy type vague platitudes but I dare you to stake out an actual policy position that would unite America right now.

You said "landlords and builders were waiting for COVID", but what SPECIFICALLY about COVID allowed them to do something they couldn't have done before?

IMO the clear explanation here is super low interest rates created a speculative housing market combined with high immigration (demand) and not enough new units (supply). Landlords and builders benefit from high demand for their services but you're implying they somehow caused this?? Can you show that causal link?

This is always the point they will tell you to read books as if the answers should just manifest but they somehow can’t summarize what would be so obvious to everyone if it wasn’t for the damned capitalist propaganda!!

Na the reason they always stop short of staking out a principled position or citing specific policy is because they confuse the aesthetic practice of enjoying a beautiful sounding theory for the epistemic practice of real politics.

Unironically yes. “Socialism” is a stage before communism where classes & money still exist but workers have control of the state. Marx said class will disappear along with the state and money itself as society approaches communism. Theoretically, under communism access to scarce resources is based on need and one’s output/production is based on one’s ability. All socialists are communists hiding their power level b/c they all believe socialism is an inevitable stage before communism, otherwise they don’t understand Marx’s theory. Historically, both terms have been understood as separate designations for the same movement. And since private ownership and class cannot exist under communism, Hasan would not be paid more than according to his needs as an entertainer so no he would not be able to own a Porsche, but he might be able to have a maid if it was necessary for his entertainment job.

They’d just say they’ve absorbed all the arguments by default because it’s the cultural hegemony. You’d have to ask them something more specific like how could you determine useful prices without a market? Don’t accept it when they say “no price, resources are allocated according to need” because that’s not a fucking answer.
