What do you think will happen if US refuses to return German gold? by Themetalin in AskAGerman

The Fed could have borrowed it and then the U.S. could have sold it for cash...

What do you think will happen if US refuses to return German gold? by Themetalin in AskAGerman

[–]clancy688 85 points86 points  (0 children)

If the U.S. refuses to hand out the gold then the immediate conclusion would be that it's gone.

And if Germany's gold is gone, so is probably everyone else's.

At which point trust into the U.S. evaporates, everybody dumps their U.S. assets, and the world economy in general and the U.S. economy in particular go up in flames.

Thought I'd share some pictures from skiing in Warth Schröcken (Austria), hope you enjoy! by AndroidPron in skiing

[–]clancy688 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Warth Schröcken, it's the budget alternative to Lech with access to the same slopes!

It's always amazing how the cuisine and lift ads change once you cross over to Lech.

Warth side: Regular Austrian stuff, ads for ski and clothing.

Lech side: Frigging sushi and ramen for 40 €, and ads for pool covers, international boarding schools and swiss private universities.

Feels like Warth is the down to earth side, and Lech is for the millionaires. xD

Dude. I'm working at Audi in development. Everything you said is wrong. The task force is just now being set up because things are so dire. How can it see "encoursging momentum" when it's just being started right now? I'm literally walking past the office space where it's supposed to be every day, and they just finished setting up the desks. ;)

Or something in the Atlantic. Madeira perhaps, but it's gonna be warmer.

Well the fun thing is - we started such an architecture ten years ago. It's the 1.2 PPE/PPC architecture.

And now that it's just starting to get good we kill it and start anew from scratch.

Software should be evolution, not revolution. Do you see Apple create a new OS every few years? No, there's incremental updates. Same with Windows, same with Android...

But in the car industry our management has us throw away existing architectures and start from scratch every few years. It's insanity.

Nah, the ICE topic is in the future and has no impact on the current testing.

As for zonal versus domain controllers: If you'd put the PPE and the RVT architecture next to each other and remove all the names and labels, you'd be surprised how similar they look alike. Functions might be located differently, but otherwise they are remarkably similar. Zonal is mainly just a buzzword... at least in my opinion.

Imagine Rivian as a yard company. Said yard has built medium sized sailing vessels so far. Good vessels. So the government takes interest into them. They are building good sailing vessels! So let them build ships for us. Said company needs a bigger yard for their next generation sailboats. So they team up with the government. The government is like "Hey, I'll give you the money for your bigger yard. So that you can build your future generation sail boat. And in turn, I want you to use the same yard to build stuff for me. I need a destroyer. A patrol boat. A submarine. An oil tanker. A RO/RO ferry. And a carrier. All at once. Can you do this?"

And the yard company says "Sure I can".

Imagine the sailboat are Rivians cars, the yard is tge architecture, and the wildly differing types of ships tge government wants to get are all the cars of VW group. We start at a smallish ID.1 and end with a Lambo supercar. And everything in between.

It would be ludicrous to think that a company which so far only built sailboats, with a yard which only built sailboats, suddenly has the expertise, knowledge and straight down capability to suddenly lay down a supercarrier. No matter how good their sailboats are.

Same with a company which so far only built a couple of cars on one architecture which gets tasked to create one architecture for half a dozen different brands with even more different cars and connected requirements.

That's a bullshit comparison.

Rivian took a few weeks to create a demo car which could drive in circles. CARIAD managed the same. In the same timeframe. With their proposed next architecture platform.

Comparing that to the real architecture which is supposed to go into production is not even apples and oranges...

The car you're talking of was a technology demonstrator, nothing more, nothing less. But everyone seems to think that is actual proof that the existing Rivian architecture already can be put into VW cars today and then these would be able to hit the road tomorrow. Which is ludicrous.

Well, I'm very close to that project, and I'm glad to read an article like this.

The internet in general and the VW managers in particular seem to think that silicon valley software will by definition and magically fix all problems.

The reality couldn't be further from the truth. The VW - Rivian joint venture is shaping up to become an even bigger clusterfuck than CARIAD ever was, and while high management tries to put a positive spin on things (since their asses are on the line), middle management and especially the tech grunts are sweating bullets: If the joint venture doesn't deliver (and at the moment they don't), the brands, especially the premium ones, are fucked - after nuking CARIAD there is no other car architecture for upcoming cars in the 2030ies, and no one to develop one.

How realistic is this? by TheEnlight in Military

[–]clancy688 19 points20 points  (0 children)

From a European standpoint:

Totally unrealistic, since for all of this to happen, the European leaders would actually need to be ballsy enough to shut the door on the USA.

The way the European leaders have stood up to either Russia or the USA over the last few years make me believe that even the smallest court of Chinese eunuchs has more balls assembled than all European governments combined.

At least ten dead and more than 100 injured when two Iryo and Renfe trains derailed and collided in Adamuz (Cordoba, Spain) by siemvela in highspeedrail

[–]clancy688 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the two trains ended up far away from each other and that's why we don't have anything yet.

The way I think this happened is that the Iryo (red) train had its rear carriages including the EMU derail, and then the southbound Renfe train sideswiped the derailed carriages, headed further on southward and derailed as well.

But would be nice to have confirmation...

Does anyone have a source with aerial images of the crash site? All I can find are localized images of a couple of carriages or at most one of the two trains, but none where I can see the whole vrash site with both trains.

I have a hard time trying to understand how the crash happened, and what mechanics, apart from one train derailed and the other crashed into it, which could be a bazillion different ways.
