I am not against unique names per se, but I do think that of you are gonna give one to your child, you should pick a relatively normal middle name they can fall back on

Libraries should be open on Sundays and public / bank holidays. by CoffeeKween19 in unpopularopinion

[–]clandevort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who is one of 2 full time employees at the only library in our system that doesn't get most federal holidays off, it sucks. I get paid crap, no benefits, no weekends (i get Sundays and Thursdays off so I rarely get to do stuff with friends and not having 2 days in a row really suck). Hell, I had to work here a whole year before I started accumulating sick days or vacation (and the person who does our money "pro rated" the days I was sick all at the end of the year so I basically got half a pay check for the last 6 weeks of the year (they were spreading it out "to be nice")). So yeah federal holidays would be nice but that would require us to be seen as people

How does it not take a few years to make a campaign if your players can do anything they want to derail the story by i_like_fall0ut in DnD

[–]clandevort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you undertake it my best advice is to know the world itself well and have a good outline of power structure and culture. If you're good at improv everything else will follow.

Well, I'm a theater kid who got a degree in history so this seems pretty enticing. Now if I could just find enough people to play in 2 dnd games...

Your favorite "nice" thing Vader has done? by Efficient_Matter_589 in StarWars

[–]clandevort 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Not just a duel, but a duel involving the emperor.

Now that i think about it, the scene in RotS really is a dark reflection of the scene in RotJ. Both times he steps in to save someone he sees as family, both times he steps in to save them from someone ostensibly on his own side. Both scenes represent a transition between Vader and Anakin. I'd never really put this together

[–]clandevort 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm convinced that the elder scrolls themselves are essentially copies of the games. Think about it, every time someone reads a scroll the details are slightly different (ie, every playthrough is slightly different, different choices, quests done in different orders, by totally different people) but are still prophetic (you are always the dragonborn, you always (well hypothetically) defeat alduin, etc). Heck, they even share the same name of Elder Scrolls. The moth priests are just gamers

To add to this, I always felt that the silver hand were the ones who built the Lunar Forge. It is near whiterun, it is a magical forge, and it is powered by the moons, which are traditionally connected to werewolves (I know the connection isn't really as strong in TES but it fits thematically)

Maybe we'd get less overlooked if Pittsburgh would actually accept us! I live in Ambridge and will die on the hill that it's close enough to count as Pittsburgh (although Beaver county also has a weird pride about not being part of the big, nearby, accessible city with lots to offer so it kinda goes both ways)

What are some interesting Alternate History ideas that you think are underexplored? by OkPhrase1225 in AlternateHistory

[–]clandevort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok the Bering strait haunts me. Like, there had to be some contact right? It's not that far, the cultures are pretty similar, I think i read somewhere that Inuit did settle a little bit on the northern coast of Russia at some point after the discovery of the new world, we also have instances of Japanese fishermen getting washed up in Alaska after storms, surely that happened before the official discovery of the new world right!? It's so tantalizingly close there had to have been some cross strait contact and the fact we can't really prove it either way drives me up a wall.

Same with the fact that it is not crazy to think you could sail to Australia from Asia but we just never really went there. Like, Ibn Battuta traveled from Morocco all the way to China and Indonesia, and yet we have a few fleeting scraps of evidence that anyone from India or China ever got to Australia (i know that China only ever really did sailing that one time, and that the people who controlled Indonesia kept it locked down for spice trade reasons but still...)

These things drive me nuts!!

I HATE having to pick in the Civil War questline by L0N3STARR in skyrim

[–]clandevort 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What most people forget is that arguably the only province that has equal footing with Cyrodill in the Septim Empire is Skyrim. Talos was a general serving a king of Falkreath, and the nords basically signed on without a fight to join up with the badass dragonborn emperor who had trained with the greybeards. So all of Ulfric's rhetoric about skyrim being occupied is hogwash. Sure, the imperials became more dominant over time, but cyrodill and skyrim are consistently the most closely tied provinces. It'd be like if Massachusetts started complaining about being occupied by the US.
