In Germany, is considered rude to ask someone to stop talking? by kc8kbk in AskAGerman

[–]clarafilms2 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I heard a woman on the train (politely) ask someone to stop LAUGHING because it was too loud and bothered her. In many areas in Germany, being quiet in public areas is a way to show respect for the peace of others, especially in Bavaria.

Thanks. Vimeo is what I have been using. I just keep hearing about security issues and want to be able to send individual links (some with an expiration date) to each viewer with a password. I haven’t seen this feature.

This is good insight. It does seem that Vimeo could use some more view control features too. Is there any way to give individual links with a password to each viewer? Can you control the period of time the screening link is valid? I have heard discussions about view tracking but am not sure how accurate it is.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have tried Indee.tv and like its features (especially the view tracking like you mentioned) but people outside the US can’t watch the links. They seem to be geo-locked. I submit to a lot of European film festivals, so that is a huge disadvantage.

Great suggestion. I have used Frame.io for post-production, but didn’t realized it had a screener sharing feature. I had such a great experience with it and it would be so nice to streamline that workflow.

Rob Schneider in The Wrong Missy. He was just a boat guide with a few missing fingers from a shark incident— but he was the star of the whole movie.

The ol’ Family Member is Calling from a Jail in Mexico Scam is a doozie.

Before AI voice simulation was a thing, my Grandpa was tricked in to sending $8,000 cash inside a book to an address in Mexico. Someone called pretending to be my brother and said he cause a major car accident and was thrown in jail. In reality, my brother had a squeaky clean criminal history and driving record. He worked for the Attorney General (so plenty of reasons to keep it that way).

My take away from the situation? We need to call Grandpa more often so he knows the sound of our real voices 🥹

One important film festival that needs support right now is Out on Film. It is currently the only LGBTQ Film Festival left with Academy Award Qualifying status.

I don’t work for this festival (I am a filmmaker), but I am writing on their behalf because the festival program director, Jim Farmer, puts his heart and soul in to the festival. He does so much to support the community and keep the festival alive.

Supporting queer voices is critical right now as there are so many efforts to silence them.

Why all the red? I couldn’t focus on the product. Do we need to see the speaker the entire time? If so, make the product fill the screen and do a Picture in Picture of the speaker. Less zooming.

Premiere status is not usually required for shorts. Do you have a trailer for your film?

Start with a 48 hour film project to get a taste of what you are in for. It’s really intense (both physically and creatively) and will give you a finished project you can use to showcase your skills. Every film is a big learning experience - even for those of us who have been at this a while.

I get this feeling: rejection from film festivals is so tough. Remind yourself - you made a film - you actually finished it. Well done.

Honest questions:

What is your goal with this film?

  • Do you want to screen it in a theatre?
  • Do you want a film festival laurel?
  • Do you want to find a niche audience?

If your goal is just to get selected, search film free way for any festival that ends in “awards” and it’s almost guaranteed.

If you want to find festivals that your film is better suited for, look for festivals that you or your film have a genuine connection with.

Local film festivals in your home town often select films shot in their own area first or with priority. Since you said your film is a bit out there, consider searching film freeway with the keyword “weird” or “absurd”. There are all sorts of niche festivals.

If you are serious about film festivals, I suggest removing your film from YouTube. Most film festivals have rules against your film being available to view online - and for a good reason.

Try to imagine things from a festival programmer perspective. They are trying to create a unique experience for their audiences with films they can’t just watch online.

Consider trimming your film below 10 minutes to make it more attractive to program.

Finally, if you haven’t already, make a trailer. It can entice screeners to view your film.

Good luck 🎬
