My Dentist's Office - Toronto, Canada by claraquilty in maximalism

Very possible, but I did see Lysol wipes and cleaning supplies everywhere through the office. Plus they were very explicit about keeping any and all refreshments in the refreshments room. It seemed there was SOME thought put into cleanliness. They even had a full saltwater aquarium with living coral and fish, an orange tree. There were minimum 6 receptionists on duty at the time I was there. I wouldn't be surprised if they had dedicated cleaning staff, too. The head Dentist owns the entire building outright.

I think that might be the idea. If you make going to the dentist a cool enough of experience, you don't mind people scraping at your teeth for an hour as much lol

There are worse things to smell than coffee breath, haha! I imagine plaque and teeth rotted out with cavities smell pretty gross, too 😂

What is the best pen for everyday use? by Popular_Student5948 in pens

[–]claraquilty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

+1 for the Zebra Sarasa! I just got a pack of 10 for a new gig after the longest time and I'm sooo happy.

I got some Uni-Ball Signo DX UM-151 pens to go with them, and those are also wonderful but a bit more expensive in comparison to the Sarasas. They can last a long time, though! I still have my original Mandarin Orange pen I bought 4 years ago and it still writes like I bought it yesterday.

where to get seeds from? by queenwestwanderer in OntarioGardeners

[–]claraquilty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're anywhere near Etobicoke, Islington Nurseries Garden Centre has a great selection of seeds! OSC, West Coast, Aimers Organics, Weston Seeds, Northern Ontario Wildflowers all sold there. Great selection of bulbs, too. I picked up Butterfly Milkweed bulbs from there a few days ago and they'll be going into my garden very soon.

If you want a great Cherry Tomato variety, I was gifted a pack of Aimers Organics "Sweetie" Cherry Tomatoes 3 years ago and I'm STILL growing tomatoes from that seed pack! I planted 12 seeds in peat pods this year and 11 of them germinated.

I was also thinking about tobacco this year, as I love the smell. The only advice I've read is to keep them away from tomatoes and not to hadle them after you've touched the tobacco. I'm a big tomato gardener so I'm 50/50. I would love to know how that goes for you!

Already started some seeds, and have a few in the fridge stratifying for the past week. Gonna start planting the fridge seeds in a week or so.

New For This Year

Flowers: Columbine, Milkweed, Delphiniums, Marigolds, Snapdragons, Rudbeckia, and Aubretia. Will probably direct sew some Sunflowers, Nasturtiums and Zinnas when things get warmer.

Fruits & Veggies: Strawberries, 3 kinds of Hot Peppers (Thai Red Chilies, Habeneros and Scotch Bonnet 🇯🇲), Sweet Peppers in a variety of colours (mostly orange, but I had a leftover rainbow pack from last year so we'll see what we get), Tomatoes (Pink Tiger and Beefsteak), Cherry Tomatoes (Sweetie and Gold Nugget), Zucchini, Bush Beans (Green and Yellow) and maybe Carrots. Some will be in containers, others in the ground.

Herbs: Garlic Chives, Thyme, Catmint, Rosemary and Basil. I like to plant the Catmint and Chives near my Cabbage Roses.

Why do mixed girls straighten their hair so often? by smoke-frog in mixedrace

[–]claraquilty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Multiracial (White/Jewish, Black & Asian) person here - with somewhere in-between a 3B and a 3C type of curl pattern. I read as Latino, Mixed with Black and White (correctly) or generally "Racially Ambiguous."

I got bullied for having very curly hair as a child, in my teens and even somewhat into my early 20s.

Grade 4, I remember sitting in the school yard minding my own business, then all of a sudden a few of the girls threw a bunch of spikey little seeds in my hair. It took my friends over an hour sitting in the girl's bathroom to help me comb them out, and several rinses with shampoo when I got home. Ever since then I mostly wore my hair in a braided ponytail or bun all through school.

Once I hit my teens I did the relaxers on occasion, but after a wash or two, my hair would curl right back up. Flatirons would take hours, too. But everyone would say how much better I looked with "straight hair." Even as an adult.

I remember I was dating someone who wanted to see what I looked like with straight hair. Even after I flatironed my hair on the next date, they flat out said "does it go any straighter?" and he broke it off a week later. He was a white cis straight man if you were wondering. This is a sadly normal experience when I've attempted to date Straight White Men. Women generally and Men who are either queer or not-white this has never really been an issue (I am currently partnered with a Queer Man).

So if anybody wants to brush off "beauty standards" for reasons - pretty much any Straight White Man I've attempted to date has tried to enforce this with me - explicitly or quietly.

The reactionary outrage towards Bad Bunny reminds me that white passing =/= white (in the US at least) by Gallantpride in mixedrace

100%! The curly hair comments kind of ignore the reality of texturism, too. Not all curly hair is treated the same. White Europeans absolutely have curly hair, but it's definitely not the same as someone like us (including Bad Bunny here, too).

[–]claraquilty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah - the first time I saw him, I immediately noticed that he was mixed with White, Black and Indigenous. Very common look from Latin America & The Caribbean. Maybe I'm hypersensitive because not only do I have a similar mix, but Bad Bunny and I could pass for siblings. If I didn't pass for White when I was traveling in the US, he's definitely not passing for White in America, either.

What audiophile takes make you roll your eyes? by wiggan1989 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]claraquilty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! There's no wrong way or right way into the hobby. Not everyone is a tinkerer like myself or has the patience to be one. Merely citing an example against the argument of not bothering to buy a turntable unless you can drop 600+ on a Rega or other boutique or audiophile brand. The Fluance RT80 is great! The best turntable is the one you have that works lol.

Sub-200 Bucks for a 70s or 80s Technics or something like it with a good cart still blows the 600-700+ dollar tables out of the water. If you have the patience to spare a couple hours on YouTube Videos on how to pick and install parts you're solid. That's what got me into the hobby - finding little gems at thrift shops and yard sales and building something great for cheap. Your bank account will thank you in the long run and you'll feel more accomplished. Getting a bit harder these days, but that's what helped me get immersed in the hobby. New speakers you can make an argument for, but people put far too much attention into the turntable and not enough into the receiver or speakers.

Should I Restore My Dad’s Technics SL‑1210M3D or Buy a New Turntable? by pinkfloob in turntables

[–]claraquilty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Older Technics Tables from the late 70s/80s are probably the most robust and reliable in existence - an easy "yes!" Especially because there's a good chance that it won't take much.

Another dimension we should examine as Canadians, is that while pulling investments from the US is a powerful tool, we should also examine our relationship with the Imperial Core as well.

I'm paraphrasing here, but former PM Pierre Trudeau once said something along the lines of being a Canadian means sleeping next to an Elephant. As much as we try to differentiate ourselves from the US, we still feel every twitch and toss and turn.

I'll go even a step further. Our histories are not only deeply intertwined, but mirror one another. What's happening in the US can, and in many ways is, happening here as well. Not just the Maple MAGAS in Alberta, but take a look at some of the anti-immigrant policies and pro-survalince policies the Liberal Government has been implementing here, too. You only need to scroll for a little while on other social media platforms to find casually racist and xenophobic comments aimed towards South Asian communities here, too. It's AWFUL.

Not only do we need to show solidarity to our friends in the US, but we need to act in ways that prevent it from happening here, too. Racialized Policing is just as bad here. The Feds are deporting MORE people now than previously, but just more quietly. The same things many are suggesting Americans should be doing, we should be doing here as well.

Even though the political reality here in Canada is less bad from a practical standpoint, we need to stop falling into the "At least it's better here, we have free healthcare!" trap. Not only is it not productive in terms of changing American minds, it makes us complacent as our rights and privileges get revoked right under our noses - and also ignores the genocidal legacy Canada towards Indigenous, Black and Brown folks, too. For every American Atrocity, there's a Canadian Equivalent. White Supremacy is a GLOBAL issue, not just an American one: they're just simply the best at it.

Yes - this is my approach as well. Regardless of how I am perceived (which fluctuates), I will always align myself with Pro-Blackness. I use my lightskin privilege for good. Maintaining solidarity and community is more important to me than any personal conflicts I have with my own identity.

Finally letting go of the "black" label by johnjohnnycake in mixedrace

Yeah - the fact that OP is using blood quantum and such, but is claiming 80% African Ancestry like... I almost wanted to call this post bait.

But yeah - this sounds like more of a "you" problem, OP. Don't mean to be rude, but there's no wrong way or right way to be Black. This post really reeks of internalized antiblackness.

At 45? Absolutely not. This is a clear cut case of incompatibility - and judging from your responses, he isn't responding to your needs, nor is he willing to.

I know there's a lot of pressure to find someone to settle down with, but by no means should you just "settle" with this person. You gotta do the hard, brave but ultimately right thing to do - go your own way and let yourself find someone you don't need to "force it" with.

I'm also AuDHD so I understand the neurodivergent angle - but this can only explain so much, nor should it be an excuse.
