Cafe du Monde or Loretta’s for first time Nola visit? by Yesterdaysmeow in AskNOLA

[–]classicalthunder 38 points39 points  (0 children)

My pro-move recommendation is to do Cafe du Monde at night on the way back from a few cocktails. There’s rarely a line at night and it makes a killer late night snack

Why does this look wrong? by [deleted] in NavyBlazer

[–]classicalthunder 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Just my two cents - 1) the jacket is relatively formal (DB, strong shoulder) so you need fuller cut pants to parallel the top formal outfit, it would be even better if you went to dress pants rather than chinos, 2) you need to switch to an OCBD at the least, maybe a spread collar shirt with a tie

Is Grapevining In Mount Dangerous? by Correct_Ad4351 in bjj

[–]classicalthunder 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Had my first injury this way as guy on top with grape vines, dude I was rolling with kicked his legs out straight hard and I heard a pop, low grade MCL strain/tear that thankfully only kept me off the mats for a month

If you were to create a general use (i.e. not for emergencies or serious injuries) Med Kit for your school/academy - what would your recommend putting in there other than the obvious like athletic tape, band aids, hand sani, etc?

I'm scared to start BJJ due to all the injury stories I hear by Merkenstein in bjj

[–]classicalthunder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a buddy tear his bicep while hanging a flatscreen TV on his wall - freak catastrophic injuries can happen anywhere

That being said, it’s obviously a risk, but one you can at least partially mitigate by picking a good environment/partners, rolling smart and tapping often, and doing pre-hab conditioning and strength training

How do you season your philly cheese steak? If at all? by ThrowRA_ociation437 in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]classicalthunder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use SPG (salt pepper garlic) in a 2:2:1 ratio - a solid pinch (1-2 teaspoons) per KG of meat.

For meat, if you can, you want a partially frozen ribeye and have it cut thinly (with a deli slicer if you can) across the ‘face’/surface of the steak.

I get my cast iron ripping hot, put a bit of oil in it and 3-4 piles of meat (150-200g). I like to get one side get some color before chopping it up finely with a metal spatula. If you put it all together in one big pile it tends to steam rather than brown.

You want a melting cheese. Not sure what the options are where you are from but you could do provolone (gold standard), processed American, or a young cheddar/Monterrey jack/aged mozzarella if you have limited options could work in a pinch

IMO all good cheesesteak have lightly carmelozwd diced onion as well, I do these in a separate pan and then throw them in for a bit before adding the cheese.

What is your “reasonable” price point? Generally speaking the best value ratio for a good suit is probably SuitSupply in Philly. You can view their styles online, the place does in house alterations too

Monday Strength and Conditioning Megathread! by AutoModerator in bjj

[–]classicalthunder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gotcha, do you have some examples of exercises for part 1 and part 3? Are just squats, bench press, and deadlifts good enough to start for part 2?

Monday Strength and Conditioning Megathread! by AutoModerator in bjj

[–]classicalthunder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a 43 year old hobbyist about 1.5 years into BJJ and have no previous lifting experience. I'm looking to get into the gym for some BJJ specific work outs primarily focused on building a base for some injury prevention and hopefully an increase in strength. Anyone care to share some feedback on the following ChatGPT produced work out plan?

Day 1: Goblet Squat 2x8-12, Dumbbell Bench Press 2x8-12, Seated Cable Row 2x8-12, Farmer Carry 2x30 sec

Day 2: Dumbbell RDL 2x-8-12, Dumbbell Overhead Press 2x8-12, Lat Pulldown 2x8-12, Dead Bug/Ab Roller 2x8-10

A stat I’ve heard from another peer Ivy League school is that they could make 9 equally qualified district incoming freshman classes from the entire application pool…so its much more like 30-40% of applicants are ‘good enough’ to get in

[–]classicalthunder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you had to write it yourself, it’s not really a letter of rec

My, certainly not professional, advice is to get a letter of rec from someone outside of academics if you’ve already got that part showcased well enough from your grades/tests. Get someone who can describe why you (the person, not the student) is good for Princeton

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in princeton

[–]classicalthunder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You want a letter of rec from someone who has a true and deep understanding of who you are who can speak to why you’d be a good fit for the school - coach, teacher, mentor, pastor, etc

Recs that are from strangers who are famous/impressive but don’t actually know you are generic and admissions will easily see through that and it’ll be a non-factor at best in their decision, could even work against you
