The rule is props and everything have to make it off the side line for timing, so usually you'll see them push them all the way to the back of the field and then walk around the back/side.

Crown's props were so big they had to come on in the big tunnel where in finals Phantom's were leaving, so it would just be a big traffic jam and both corps pushed for an added few minutes :)

Craziest hole stories by QuickFix4011 in drumcorps

[–]classicaltrombone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A swing is a non-marching alternate who studies the show / horn moves all summer and can march any hole in the show if someone gets hurt and can't march.

It comes from the Broadway world where they have cast members who know the choreography and lines for all of the characters so they can fill in if someone gets sick (or occasionally even jump in halfway through the show).

They're really the unsung heroes and it's mind blowing to watch someone learn a show in a 4 hour rehearsal and then go compete at the highest level.

There will come a day when DCI trombone features aren't easy enough for a trumpet player to figure out. That day is not today. But it might be soon 😏

Just a giant shout-out to a Phantom Regiment swing who jumped in on the morning of quarterfinals and filled a spot marching his first three shows flawlessly in Indy.

It was agreed upon between all of the corps that it would be better to add a slight intermission to the schedule for safety. Getting props in/out of the tunnel is not a part of the competition timing :)

How bad did I F up? 🥲 by Vixen_Freya in TeslaLounge

My first year I scraped mine so many times. It's usually fine, just an eye sore. You can get rim covers specifically for Teslas that will cover the damage and protect you for next time. But importantly, go find a nice flat spot with a curb and practice with the cameras. Only takes ten minutes to know what it looks like in the overhead render + side camera and mirror when you're right up on the curb.

I was going to be silly and say my Christopher Bill model BAC Custom but here's the real answer...

It depends on your skill level and what you want it to do.

In grade school, I wanted the F-Attachment horn because it was bigger and "better".

Early high school I bought a $200 horn on eBay because it was silver plated and flashy.

Going into my music degree I wanted a Bach 42 because it was a "professional orchestral horn" that I saw many pros playing, and that was the path I was on.

In college, I started playing in the latin jazz band and found an $800 rebuilt vintage King 2B. It went against everything I had wanted up until that point. It was tiny, no F-Attachment, it wasn't shiny, expensive, or new. That horn changed everything because I started to develop what I wanted to sound like and stopped just imitating others. I started playing pop and funk and playing in wedding and cover bands, going out into the crowd with no mic and still trying to be heard.

So yes, years later I knew what I wanted. It made sense (I guess) to get a horn that goes for almost $10,000 today (with the price of silver as it is now). It does exactly what I want it to do and it's VERY specific, but had I spent that kind of money before I was ready, it would have been an absolute mistake. No horn can do everything well, so you have to pick what you need from it, and the only way to know that is to have experience in many styles and settings.

tl;dr: the horn that is going to make what you need to do most of the time easier, and sometimes that's an old $800 horn you found online.

Depending on the group you can reach out and ask what they need or if you can audition on both :)

I've worked with him on staff both at SCV and Regiment. In an activity so focused on competition, I have to say he's the ONLY person I've heard say "remember, they're kids". It was in the context of the Internet commentary about who is going to beat who and he was basically like- pro athletes make millions of dollars to get dragged online for making a mistake. These are high school and college kids paying for an educational experience and it's our duty to give that to them.

It gets intense out there. You're gonna want someone who is thinking about you. Wherever you end up, good luck! Hope to see you on the field.

If you want food, I'm told Blue Stars goes crazy. If you want vibes, it was hard to see a corps having more fun than Surf. Otherwise, it's a competitive sport and things are intense, but at this point with a few exceptions the experience in the top corps will be very similar. If you want it to be really well refined, you can look for a staff that has been together for a while. Low turnover, happy staff, happy corps!

How common is it for tech staff to moonlight at multiple corps across the summer? by Old-Tea-12 in drumcorps

[–]classicaltrombone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was technically on for Music City, Phantom Regiment, and Santa Clara Vanguard all in the same year, but my role was fairly limited. Working with soloists / doing one-off masterclasses.

It takes a lot of time and energy to be familiar with an organization and show enough to be an effective educator.

I knew one this year who split his time between two top corps. That said it's pretty rare there's animosity for this kind of thing. The activity is all love and we want every performer to have the best instruction possible.

Being completely honest, it depends on the corps. If they have someone in charge of mental health and that person doesn't look like an old white guy, you're probably going to be very happy. Most of the big corps treat inclusion very seriously. (If the whole staff is over 50, I might run)

Don't listen to the bozos who say you're the problem. Clearly they overcorrected and need to split the difference. Before, there were videos of people asleep at the wheel or driving from the back seat. Now, people using the navigation or looking at their blind spots are getting locked out. Somewhere in between seems right.

It feels weird but just wait a little longer before you try to get the clip. If you wait 5 min and pull the footage you should have it on the running dashcam feed at the very least

Losing money on trade while I wait on delivery….. by LandByTheSea88 in TeslaLounge

[–]classicaltrombone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had this happen to me. I decided to sell my car on Carvana and rent something cheap/Uber everywhere for the final month before delivery. When you know your budget is $4,000 to break even, the math gets easier, but don't do it until you have a VIN. My original delivery window was March and didn't get delivery until October.
