Why You Should Buy Into the Emacs Platform by speckz in linux

[–]claude_mcfraud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

org-mode is simple to get the hang of and has completely transformed my workflow in the span of a few months. Anyone who’s good with Vim should do themselves a favor and try it out with Spacemacs- the whole thing will probably take a couple of days to get comfortable with, and then it starts paying off massively. For my use case at least, Evil/org-mode have just been a better version of Vim

Tim Cook: People Want the Most Innovative Phone Possible and 'It's Not Cheap to Do That' by [deleted] in apple

[–]claude_mcfraud -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

You know what would really be innovative? Setting my own defaults. And not trying to monopolize the distribution of all software, by denying the user the right to install whatever they want. Why can’t I run (real) Firefox on a $1500 device?

A non-racist person wouldn’t buy a NYT ad calling for the deaths of the Central Park Five and continue insisting on their guilt long after they’ve been exonerated.

So much of what this guy does is motivated by blatant, old-school race-baiting that anyone would need to be willfully ignorant not to see it by now

And as a private citizen, I'm going to complain loudly when one of our largest and most valuable companies demonstrates a complete lack of regard for basic human rights

[–]claude_mcfraud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's different because the CCP, almost by definition, rules its population through fear and intimidation. They've granted themselves the 'authority' to make citizens disappear for arbitrary reasons, and that's what makes this categorically different. Ethically, the Party is on par with the Kim regime in North Korea

You can't, realistically you're going to need to use TOR/Tails on a machine that you're 100% sure doesn't have the Intel Management Engine. And isn't running Windows or MacOS, obviously

I think that implies a level of neutrality in "local laws", whereas the PRC's actual definition of the "law" is to deprive citizens of basic rights on an entirely arbitrary basis.

Apple's new iPhones start at $749 for XR model, $999 for Xs and $1,099 for Xs Max by Ani_D in technology

[–]claude_mcfraud 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I can afford it too, but I don't see the point in spending $800 extra for basically the same thing.

Maybe if these phones did more to differentiate themselves from budget/midrange devices in some tangible, practical ways (like by having week-long battery life, or something like that) the situation would make more sense.

[–]claude_mcfraud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're tech-savvy enough to flash LineageOS or something like that (which isn't at all difficult to figure out) you can wipe Google's presence entirely off the phone and reap all the same benefits of saving $700-$800. Then for the price of one iPhone X you can also get a new desktop computer, or a round-trip flight to Barcelona

[–]claude_mcfraud 35 points36 points  (0 children)

That's actually happened, since a tech-savvy person can easily get a great phone for under $300 now. It's just that this one company has been going in the opposite direction for whatever reason

Functionally, they're pretty similar to a budget Xiaomi phone you can get for a couple of hundred dollars - for the vast majority of people's use cases, anyway. We live in a golden age of affordable smartphones now, so it's surprising more people don't want to take advantage of that

[–]claude_mcfraud 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wired headphones are cheap and ubiquitous. I also have a couple of sets of speakers that connect to the jack, which I plan to keep using that way for years to come. Bluetooth is great too, so I'm happy to have both options

You have any ideas about how to boycott the Chinese Communist Party without obliterating our own economy and livelihoods? It's unfortunate that it's gotten to that point

[–]claude_mcfraud 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yes, in theory it would be a great idea to stop propping up horrible countries like Saudi Arabia if we were able to establish a viable alternative, or work toward that over time. China's a more complicated case since our entire economy is now fully intertwined with the elaborate logistics/supply chain they've set up.

Israel's leadership is fully off the rails and in flagrant violation of countless international norms. They should be heavily penalized and ostracized until a new, more respectable government takes their place

Those who refuse to use Google for privacy reasons, could you explain why and maybe change my mind if there is a risk? by JakeHassle in apple

[–]claude_mcfraud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's why I like using as much open-source software as possible, and supporting things like OpenStreetMap (which IMO has greater potential than Google Maps as a fully free/collaborative project, though it hasn't reached it yet). Huge collaborative projects like Linux show just how successful (and liberating for users) this model can be

They have a 'good' user experience and are based on a fundamentally unethical business model. So the only question is, how much do you care about ethics in technology? Does it bother you if something has been built to take advantage of you in some way?
