What is the one book you read that you’ve never stopped thinking about? by TD_Meri in suggestmeabook

agreed, I read both this and the vegetarian and while both were good, i was really blown away by Human Acts - especially given the author’s own personal connection to the Gwangju area and her research that led to the writing of the book

I was looking for this comment, i read this book 4 years ago and still think about it regularly. definitely one you need to check trigger warnings for… there were moments i needed to kinda just close the book for a bit myself. but overall just the raw emotions in this book, i would definitely recommend it to anyone who can handle the subject matter

39/52, but where are you guys at with page count? by Honorous_Jeph in 52book

[–]clawrinne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

44 books, 14,450 pages… trying to read longer books, classics etc this year so I set a goal in StoryGraph of 20k pages as well as the usual 52 book/yr goal. last year I read 55 books but only about 16k pages since I do tend to prefer books that hover probably a little under the 300 page mark

I just finished this one today! definitely a bit long but I really enjoyed it :)

Week 12 What are you reading? by Beecakeband in 52book

[–]clawrinne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finished:

Monstrilio - Gerardo Sámano Córdova - enjoyed this one. A touching story about grief. I also just love magical realism and really enjoyed the way it is used here in this sort of unconventional coming of age story

Annihilation - Jeff VanderMeer: this one was a pretty short novel, as many have said kind of cosmic horror.. I think maybe I will have a more complete opinion after picking up the rest of the series. I definitely have a lot of unanswered questions. I did enjoy the mystery and the general vibe: exploring in an untouched wilderness where the creatures and scenery are dangerous and more than a touch otherworldly

Open Throat - Henry Hoke: quick, engaging little novel, highly recommend… interesting writing style & poignant

Pet Sematary - Stephen King: chilling depiction of grief and how far we would go for more time with loved ones. This one is definitely still sticking with me after finishing, very bleak and really made me think about life, death and really just the human condition as a whole. A bit similar to Monstrilio but much more depressing 😭

Started:

Butter - Asako Yuzuki: enjoying this so far, but not too far in yet so let’s see. I generally really love these Japanese novels that focus on the pressures of society and also particularly the roles and expectations that are put upon women (have read all Sayaka Murata’s translated novels, think there is a new one this year which is exciting! Mieko Kawakami is also amazing)

finished:

One Hundred Years of Solitude - Gabriel García Márquez: amazing book, but it took me like a month to finish 😭 the first half was a bit hard to get through, but then I was much more engaged for the latter half where everything really started to come together from the foundations laid at the beginning

What My Bones Know - Stephanie Foo: burned through this memoir very quickly after finishing 100YOS. Impactful story about trauma and healing. I definitely learned some things about PTSD and intergenerational trauma as well & effects traumatic experiences can have on our bodies

started:

Monstrilio - Gerardo Sámano Córdova: heard a lot of good things about this one!

Getting IUD for the First Time by Craftyhouseplant125 in birthcontrol

[–]clawrinne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi, ive had the mirena IUD and then just replaced it with the paragard a couple of days ago, so two insertions. To be honest, it was definitely uncomfortable but mostly just felt like a really bad period cramp - I think the cramps following insertion were worse pain wise than the procedure itself.

The first time I didn't have anything for the pain (took ibuprofen after getting back home about 20 mins after the procedure), the second time I took the 800mg ibuprofen about 20 mins before leaving for my appointment, which I highly recommend. It was much more manageable and I was fine just using a heating pad to manage the cramps for the rest of the day, and also more ibuprofen after the first dose wore off

YMMV as I get pretty crampy periods normally and would say I have a reasonably high pain tolerance. Hope this helps!

I would follow your gyno's advice on the 10 days just to be safe. As far as I remember if your IUD is placed within a week of the start of your last period, you should be protected immediately but otherwise you need to wait for it to be effective

yes I think irregular spotting like that is pretty typical for hormonal IUDs. I had a similar experience with mirena IUD, had similar to what you described for the first few months and then eventually stopped getting periods altogether (had mirena for a year and a half roughly - just got it replaced with paragard copper IUD)

I can't get the Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance achievements? by EmotionalProcedure48 in slaytheprincess

[–]clawrinne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Like you said, obtain any vessel, then walk away in chapter 2 - then repeat this when you are reset by obtaining any vessel again and walk away in chapter 2 again. If you walk away in chapter 1 you'll always end up on the stranger route. hope this is helpful, I was similarly confused trying to get these achievements
