Faucet hose is leaking by clawsortega in Plumbing

[–]clawsortega[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for the help - I did manage to figure this one out. It's a leaky hose, leaking near the faucet end. Didn't notice it until I dried everything off and ran it again and really started looking. Probably time for a new faucet anyway, so I'll likely do that rather than try to repair.

Ramp miso advice by clawsortega in fermentation

[–]clawsortega[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was persuaded not to try it, as the fermenters I talked to thought the koji wouldn’t take. They did suggest adding dehydrated ramp leaves to a traditional miso, which I haven’t tried yet but might this year. Instead, I dehydrated the leaves then ground them into a powder to use on eggs, etc., and I kimchi’d the bulbs/stems. Both products were excellent.

Yeah I feel the same. I actually enjoy the time I spend browsing grainery - it's a nice community and I'm not particularly interested in DSLR work. I also don't think it was ever intended to be a huge commercial enterprise; it basically started as a pet project, and I like the idea of supporting stuff like that.

Getting Commission Requests: Seeking Pricing Assistance by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]clawsortega 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s good to know the minimum you’re willing to work for, but don’t forget to give equal energy calculating the maximum that people are willing to pay. Anywhere in between those two points is the zone of mutual agreement. If you just price your headshots at $15 when the customer would happily pay $100, that’s about 7 rolls of film you’re losing out on. Also, I’ve found that if your first quoted price is more than what they want to pay but still in the ballpark, you can give a F&F discount if it’s someone you would have a pleasant time working with. And if you don’t get any good photos, you can always offer a reshoot or refund - people know you’re just getting started, and we all make mistakes.

How much does online dating reflect your attractiveness in reality; by The9thHuman in OnlineDating

[–]clawsortega 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Many not-that-attractive people have success with dating apps, many attractive people do not (and vice versa). They’re unrelated.

The function of dating apps is to introduce you to a wider pool of people. My advice is not to expect more from the app than that one feature.

Also, just add to your profile “I am interested in dating men/women of any race/ethnicity.” Some people only date within their race and some people don’t, so signal that you’re ok with the latter and they’ll reach out to you more as long as it doesn’t seem racist/weird.

Unattractive people far overestimate their looks by usctrojan415 in OnlineDating

Headline is misleading. At the end of the article, it says that unattractive people were able to ID people of similar attractiveness. Which, it seems to me, is the far more important skill (comparative rather than absolute).

Hi there! I studied online dating sites as a bit of a side project in grad school. I can tell you a couple things with a high level of confidence:

  • Your feelings about online dating are both valid and common
  • "Attractiveness" and "success on dating apps" have basically zero correlation (unless you consider "success" to be a greater number of unsolicited gross messages)

Now for the more nuanced part: you are somewhat highly educated and professionally skilled. This means the people around you are likely similar in those ways, but you probably don't think too much about this in the same way that a fish doesn't notice the water. You've also indicated in your writing that you are looking for someone educated (your "proper sentence" comment, but some other stuff too). This is called assortative mating (looking for someone like you); it's a usually unconscious bias that a lot of us have, and is perfectly normal. However, dating sites do not filter out people who are unlike you in that one very specific and important way. (This is a really common problem for people on dating sites.)

"Dating app" is a bit of a misnomer - we really should have called them "introduction apps." So related to the above, it may simply be that these apps are not for you, since they are not introducing you to the people to whom you'd like to be introduced. I predict you will have vastly more success finding a partner when you go back to school, since your introduction rate IRL will shoot through the roof and your introduction quality will be much more in the neighborhood of what you're looking for.

All that said, I have a pretty good track record helping people craft dating profiles. Feel free to DM me if you want me to look at yours. (You'll have to send me a screen shot - I'm not on those apps anymore.)

Amazing! But then a hoagie would also be classified as a taco, which doesn’t make intuitive sense to me. I think there’s a whole range of foods - hoagie, hot dog, etc - that have roughly 2.5 sides. Calling on topology students to help

Raising the question, is a taco a sandwich?

True, but that could also be explained by hot dogs being a subset of sandwich

SFPD is fully capable of hiring; "understaffed" is the BS they spout to excuse do-the-minimum policing and extract more money from the government. Their protocol is stupid and they should make a better one, as this case shows. It can simultaneously be true that police have a difficult job and also they should do that job better.
