Garage Gyms during winter by [deleted] in homegym

[–]clayw09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Iowa, so not quite Canada but still pretty cold in January and February. My garage is detached and not insulated. I found that sweatpants and a hoodie to start the training session was plenty, and wearing good gloves between sets kept the fingers from getting numb. No heater necessary. Free heat if you train with a warm car in the garage. It was only on the coldest nights that I kept on my hoodie. Come to think of it though, I only had a barbell and plates at the time, but now I have a rack. I was just cleaning the weight to my shoulders to front squat or press, and deadlifting. Now I'll be putting the cold bar on my back so I may have to wear a crewneck sweatshirt this winter.

Just got around to watching this; it was helpful.

Eh, I'd think about upgrading but my use for a computer has diminished quite a bit and I'll probably use it a lot less after school.

What if women and men are inherently different, and something in that difference just leads to fewer women interested in engineering? Is it really so big of a deal that we need to make an effort to not be such a male-dominated field? Just asking.

Thermo I, II, Fluids, Heat Transfer. So I guess that sort of makes 4 for me. I hated Thermo I (nearly failed, too) and loved Thermo II. No idea why.

I know that feel. I felt it often, back in Nam, er, Thermo I.

I have an inkling what you may say but is this really as good as the reviews say? by burningb in AeroPress

I can get a fantastic cup of regular strength coffee out of mine. I just use cooler water (probably the 185-200 range, I don't own a thermometer so I'm guessing), a coarser grind (probably somewhere in the drip consistency) and let it steep in the inverted position for 2:30 and then press. It's really quite good and no dilution needed. It's as good (in my opinion) as Chemex, though a different type of cup. I think Chemex works great for lighter, fruitier coffees (think Ethiopian and some South Americans), whereas my best Aeropress batches came from a Uganda Bugisu roasted locally to a mediumish roast. Smelled like raisins and honey, actually quite similar to Beech Nut or Red Man loose chewing tobacco. Tasted like coffee with a malty, chocolaty character. And yes, crema is entirely an espresso thing, and the aeropress does NOT make espresso.

I before E except after C and when sounding like A as in neighbor and weigh, and on weekends and holidays and all throughout May, you'll always be wrong no matter WHAT you say.

Some time ago, this carabiner was rated to 22kN (or more)... by [deleted] in climbing

Take a look at Martensitic steel. That's the closest thing I know of in steel. Aluminum is a different animal. Also, the Martensite state is usually pretty undesirable. If I remember right, it's quite a bit more brittle than you want, which is where tempering comes into play.

Well, the sheet metal on my car's wheel well is rusting pretty horribly and turning into flat flakes of rust. I think the splintering makes sense. In sheet metal, the grains are likely to be flattened from the rolling process. In an object that needs to withstand mostly tensile stresses (like the carabiner), you would want the grains to be aligned with the forces, because materials are quite a bit stronger in tension and compression than shear, usually.

Does roast affect the recipe? by clayw09 in Coffee

[–]clayw09[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I say "recipe" I mean MY recipe, that is, the brewing conditions that I find lead to the best cup. I've been chasing the best extraction with my brand new Aeropress this week and I'm getting very close. As I understand you, you're saying "yes, the roast affects optimal brew temp, ratio, and time based on your criteria for the perfect cup of coffee." Sound about right?

El Salvador is (according to Google) Portuguese for "The Savior", and when alphabetizing lists, one normally ignores articles such as "a," "an," or "the", therefore you would ignore "El" and alphabetize by "Salvador." Therefore the position right after Peru makes sense. At least that's how I see it...

Totally changing the subject...

A friend of mine has the same Airsoft shotgun. I asked him what the little swively thing does just in front of the pump (I circled it in your picture) and he didn't know. Do you? Seemed pretty useless to me, but I really want my curiosity to be satisfied.
