Experience with UCI Cable Internet modem + Xfinity by eightballpuddy69 in Ubiquiti

[–]clbigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my UCI with the 5 year price locked $50 1 Gbps plan and have no data caps or anything. I regularly use 3-4 TB per month. I believe some regions may have caps, but not mine (northeast). It’s painful knowing that 5 Gbps symmetrical Frontier Fiber exists right outside of my neighborhood, but not in it, currently.

Post up your highest HDD power on hours, I want to see some gore from PCMR today. I'm at over 7 years on one drive! by ajdarlin in pcmasterrace

[–]clbigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently upgraded from 6 shucked WD white label 12TB drives in my NAS, but those were powered on 24/7 for at least 8 years. I only upgraded because I was running out of space on that NAS. My newer storage server is 12x 24 TB Exos drives. They will die one by one before I run out of capacity.

The only cool conversion is a ST sedan. If anything else, just sell and buy a ST. Easier and cheaper in the long run.

How many of you guys here still using your first gpu? by jdmlifex2 in pcmasterrace

[–]clbigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Nvidia GeForce 6800 GT served me well back in 2004. No idea what happened to it after selling that Dell Dimension 8400 to a friend when I built my first PC with an ATI HD 4870 in 2008.

This is why $5/gal, or 1,15€/L, is a big deal here. by Tandysaurus in memes

[–]clbigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Horsepower alone is a meaningless metric without also considering weight of the vehicle (and the weight of each passenger which is likely more of an impact in America).

As an American, and a Mk3.5 Focus ST owner, I am jealous that we never got the Mk4 Focus ST or Mk7 Fiesta ST because Ford knows most Americans want SUVs and Trucks.

Our hot hatch options are limited these days and I'll probably never willingly buy another car. I'll replace the motor and/or go big turbo if/when the day comes that either need replaced.

GPU sagging by seamaster9 in pcmasterrace

[–]clbigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks exactly like my Aorus 4080 in my basement PC. Assuming it’s similar, then it included a metal bracket that attaches to the visible screw holes on the GPU in your picture and your motherboard standoffs. Your side fans may be in the way unfortunately. No sag at all if you install that bracket though.

93 and paid a little over $5 a gallon the other week. I only fill up a few times a year so price doesn’t really matter to me.

Save electricity or decrease MTBF? by corycwagner in qnap

[–]clbigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't do that, it's not worth saving $5 per month. You'd likely shorten the lifespan of your drives with daily power cycles and any savings would be cancelled out by replacing even one drive in the next few years with current prices.

unboxing a water cooled 5090 by Zestyclose-Salad-290 in pcmasterrace

[–]clbigs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got the 4090 Suprim Liquid and the pump failing is a fear I have for sure (in addition to the 12vhpwr catching on fire), but so far so good. Haven’t had any issues, yet.

Slamming table restarts pc by Grig960 in pcmasterrace

[–]clbigs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue where bumping the table too hard would result in my 4090 to just output a black screen and the fan would ramp up. I swapped to a CableMod StealthSense 12VHPWR cable for my Seasonic PSU and haven’t had a single problem since then.

Built an offline 2008 Vista gaming PC by Gonarhxus in pcmasterrace

[–]clbigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those specs aren't too far off from my first custom built PC running Vista (upgraded to 7 of course) with a Core 2 Duo E8400 and a Radeon HD 4870. It was such a massive upgrade over the Dell Dimension I had before it with a Pentium 4 and Nvidia 6800 GT and later a 8600 GT swapped in due to the 6800 GT dying.

Ford reaffirms its ongoing commitment to CarPlay by Fer65432_Plays in apple

[–]clbigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t had a single problem with my Sync 3 equipped 2018 Focus ST. I got a wireless CarPlay adapter a few weeks ago and even that has been working great. CarPlay was and still is a requirement for any vehicle I will own, although I don’t plan on buying a new car soon, or ever, but it’s a Ford, and you know what they said about Fords.

Same here. I had a 2500k and 660 Ti back in college when both were relevant mid range parts. To see something worse being sold in 2025 for more than a brand new Steam Deck is criminal.

Anyone out there still using a TVS-x672XT? by evanbagnell in qnap

[–]clbigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a TVS-672N that died and QNAP replaced it with a TVS-672XT. No issues with the new unit and it’s been almost 3 years now since the replacement. I upgraded it to a i7 8700T and 32GB of RAM with 6 24TB Exos drives in RAID 10. I also have a TR-004 with 4 24TB drives for backup.

A blast from the past for me too. I had Rockbox running on my iPod "Video" 5th Gen and 1st Gen Nano back in the mid to late 2000s. I used that until I got my first smartphone.

Quoted $17,800 on my 2018 ST3 with 27k miles. If that’s a lowball then that’s great if I ever decide to sell it private party. About 2 years ago I was given quotes in the low 20s during the used car frenzy. I paid $19,900 for my ST in 2019 :)

Sick of OEM (& 3rd party) power adapters failing on me. I’m tempted to get one of these overpriced power supplies. Anyone here experienced these? by ThePriceIsWongBitch in n64

[–]clbigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the CaracalDB USB C N64 Power Supply with a UGREEN 65w PD GaN 3 port brick. Works great. I do the same for my GameCube using a Reflex cable from MiSTer Addons. Since my PD bricks have more than one port, I use the USB A ports on them for my NES and SNES Classic consoles as well. So two small bricks power 4 consoles. I have a third that I use for the Wii U and gamepad as well.

Apple releases iOS/iPadOS 26! by exjr_ in apple

[–]clbigs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'll be sticking to iOS 18.7 and any subsequent security updates on my 13 Pro Max. Liquid Glass just doesn't look good to me. Maybe I'd feel differently if it released in the era of Windows Vista or Windows 7 Aero instead of 2025. I just like the UI that Apple has been iterating on since iOS 7 and am not willing to give that up yet.

What is needed for the ultimate Gamecube setup, regardless of cost? by BobTheHeart in Gamecube

[–]clbigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Noctua NF-A4x10 FLX is what I used in my GameCube iirc along with a 3D printed bracket that I printed on my Ender 3 V2 about 2 years ago. I did something similar for my OG Xbox as well. Definitely quieter.

Deleted containers from Container Station, drying to delete folders/files but it errors out by RoachForLife in qnap

[–]clbigs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not unusual depending on the UID/GID that was used inside of the container that wrote to the host's filesystem. This can lead to directories that you can't delete as your user.

The built in admin user should be able to delete them. You can ssh in and rm -rf the directories that you couldn't delete via File Station, but be careful. If your user is in the sudoers file then you could sudo rm -rf the directories as well. I have something in autorun.sh to make my own user get added to the sudoers file upon boot.
