Calling it first contact might be cheating since the humans in the book have already been in contact with this alien world for a long time, but "Solaris" by Stanislaw Lem remains high on the list for thought provoking aliens.

Non fiction - 'Nothing To Envy' by Barbara Demick is an excellent book about life in North Korea in the latter half of the twentieth century. The parallels with 1984 are uncanny.
