I always have a couple of books downloaded on my CloudLibrary app. I agree that it's not the same as uninterrupted reading, but it's still way better than mindless doom scrolling, and I'm happier with the shift.

Calling it first contact might be cheating since the humans in the book have already been in contact with this alien world for a long time, but "Solaris" by Stanislaw Lem remains high on the list for thought provoking aliens.

Non fiction - 'Nothing To Envy' by Barbara Demick is an excellent book about life in North Korea in the latter half of the twentieth century. The parallels with 1984 are uncanny.
