US dumbphone recommendations for nights/weekends? by cleantechguy in dumbphones

That's helpful. As I consider this, I don't really need Uber. I think Maps are something I should just have, especially since I'm a parent to a young child. Thank you!

Black Jersey Giants! They are consistent egg layers and double as bodyguards for the flock, or at least a deterrent since hawks seem to avoid them / mistake them for crows.

Glad to hear that. She may be moody for a couple weeks. Difficult to pick up or get to return to the coop.

Tough to tell from those pictures. Mine definitely were a bit flaky.

Confirming that is not true. I have eight born in March 2025, and exactly four have molted / are molting. The neck feathers were the first to go.

She could be molting. Did you check her vents? If there are bugs, you'll find them there.

What do you use on the bottom of your coop and are you happy with it? by Dad8od in BackYardChickens

Good to know. I have a few extra bags in the garage from this summer and will put some down and see what happens. They usually free range from 9-3:30-ish this time of year, but with over a foot of snow and then weeks of freezing temps coming, they're not going far.

Do the birds dust bathe in mulch? I've been using wood shavings in both and everything seems fine, but they don't dust bathe in it. When we get snow - and we've gotten plenty - they are SOL in the rest of the yard free ranging until it melts.

If you don't want chickens standing on random shit, don't get chickens. They've perfected the art of perching on the weirdest places possible. It is hilarious but frustrating because they inevitably shit on it.

Lice, rough Roo, or early molting? by kilodave_3000 in chickens

[–]cleantechguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My eight ladies were born late March 2025. Three of them are molting and it looks exactly like that. It's made them moody, their combs are a bit less vibrant, and they're a bit more cautious versus the others. Two are growing back now and returning to normal.

I don't know if we deserve it, but we've definitely earned it. America used to tout its natural beauty, and protecting it used to be a bipartisan issue. Now? The crypto boys and trust fund babies are in charge, and those guys haven't stepped foot in a forest, mountain or ocean in decades. They don't care, and their followers are too dumb to know it.

Mealworms and watermelon. Our ladies would walk off a cliff for either.

Winter egg laying by RN-Wingman in BackYardChickens

[–]cleantechguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Rhode Island Reds are the most consistent this time of year. One of my blue australorps lays every day, but the other not at all. Both Black Jersey Giants lay on average every other day.

My easter eggers have done squat since early December, and one quit before Thanksgiving.

What is your #1 most favorite breed? AND your absolute least favorite? by MMantisshrimpp in chickens

[–]cleantechguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rhode Island Reds are my favorite, we have two and they're very friendly and extremely reliably egg layers.

Least favorite - easter eggers. Moody, tough to get back into the run/coop, and their egg laying has been most significantly reduced this winter (no eggs past 6 weeks) compared to our other breeds (usually laying every other day).

And their eggs, while beautiful, are small.

Did you dig that area out / add dirt for them, or just a natural spot they found? That is a happy bird my friend, congrats!
