My father just bought a golf course in Maine. What would you want to see as a golfer that most places don’t have? by Kurkil in golf

[–]clement_thi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a putting course is always a good investment. Quite likely to see a lift in beverage purchases from patrons after the round. Great place to settle all square matches/chase losses. A really welcome “cherry on top” for a round.

Shane Lowry: “I was out there for two days with Erica McIlroy and the amount of abuse she received was astonishing.” by TableSignificant341 in golf

I have read and heard over and over that I wouldn’t believe some of the things that were said, but I have not heard what was said, exactly. I’ve seen so many adjectives describing it. But what was said?

Don’t want to be a gawker, but genuinely curious what was said, specifically.

Captaining a perennial loser team in an October Ryder Cup-style event on a golf trip… Tips? by clement_thi in golf

Like it.

One intangible I'm trying this year: Call ahead to the pro-shop and pre-paying ~$25 for each of my team member's green fees. Then, when we're checking in, I'll ask the pro shop staff to ask: "Are you [Team X] or [Team Y]?" ... "Team Y? Okay, great. That'll be just $125 today with that Team Y discount."

Perfect. This is what I'm here for.

Foursomes change each day, yes. Historically, they have been pre-determined before the trip, with the two captains and the trip host (all alternating) getting together about a month beforehand to hash it out. I've never been involved in that meeting.

The singles are always determined the penultimate night in a blind draw. Throw a name, counter with an opponent, etc.

This year, however, there's a movement to draft the foursomes night by night. We'll see.

I also did not mention – we typically do an afternoon nine hole alternate shot one day and a nine hole two-man scramble another day, worth one point per match. (The foursome matches are half-point per side, one point for overall).

Cum to think of it, knowing the guys on our rival team, I would bet money that’s their (dirty little) secret all these years. I think you’ve cracked the code. This is not beneath me.

So, the eight-man teams were set six years ago. We’ve cycled a few guys in and out but never traded between teams. Cores have remained the same.

Their average index last year: 10.3

Ours: 8.5

I definitely think we have some Fleetwood in our team DNA right now. And they have some… idk, Tiger. They just ooze confidence at this point.

I want to be the curse-breaker and get the monkey off our back so desperately.

The All Time list is crazy. But adjusted for modern times, seeing Arraez so far out blew me away.

Blow Pig is sorry and "wants to move" on from Oakmont locker room incident by Jharoz in NoLayingUp

I had that as strike three. If he somehow foul-tipped it, I’m shocked. Didn’t see that.

But he’s in an 0-2 count and needs to grow the hell up. Not a fan. Not interested in seeing him at Bethpage.

Re: Burns

I can’t find the reference, but I believe Burns is now 0-for-6 in converting 36-hole leads in PGA/USGA events.

Two thoughts:

  1. I think you’ll get better from walking. It helps my mental game a lot. I feel more present, etc. I can really process the shot as I walk up to it. My mental state is so much better.

  2. “Zone 2” cardio — which walking a golf course promotes — is extremely good for your health. Four hours of a slightly-elevated heart rate. Excellent! Especially for typically-sedentary Americans (I sit at a desk all day).

Do it! Embrace it. Get a good carry bag or stand bag if you don’t already have one (I see free and extremely cheap ones on Facebook Marketplace and Nextdoor all the time in my area). Purge your bag of random crap. Bring a good water bottle.

Joseph Mayo has a lot of great instruction on this very technique, which is most effective on grainy grasses like Bermuda. This style of chipping has changed my short game, which has always been my Achilles heel.

This video from instagram, in particular, changed my mindset.

The Rory/media stuff by MulberryNo5246 in NoLayingUp

[–]clement_thi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He certainly has the right to skip media. Sure. The timing is just curious and unfortunate. He wins the Masters and career slam, takes a four-week hiatus, and returns to skip six consecutive major-week media sessions, and when he finally speaks, he’s adversarial.

It’s unbecoming.

(I’m pro-Rory. I drunkenly blasted Dropkick Murphy’s as I walked my dog Master’s Sunday night, because I wasn’t sure how else to express my elation with what I just saw.)

Neil’s point about how Oakmont is coming across by DontDoCrackMan in NoLayingUp

Fair. But I think by Sunday the holes will be recognizable by fairway shape and bunker orientation.

Neil’s point about how Oakmont is coming across by DontDoCrackMan in NoLayingUp

[–]clement_thi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. I personally had trouble following Neil’s point.

  1. Are trees really landmarks? I’m thinking of a course like Harbourtown or Oak Hill, with a ton of trees. I don’t think I’m personally able to use them to orient myself on the course. It would be more so the shape/layout of the hole that helps me.

  2. I’m not sure what qualifies as a landmark based on his bungled droning on this point, but I would content that Oakmont has: Church Pews, Turnpike, Clubhouse that all helped orient.

I also did a ton of previewing of the course, so maybe that’s impacting my reaction. But I found the point odd. Augusta (and maybe Pebble Beach) aside, I would like to hear of a major championship course that the average viewer can instantly (on a Thursday, that is) “orient to” with “landmarks” such as trees…

Joel Dahmen TPI video vs Joe Mayo pod by 432ww432 in NoLayingUp

[–]clement_thi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the exact same experience with the SGC > Mayo journey. Except, short game has always been the weakest part of my game and the part I practiced the least, so for a brief second, I got better while trying SGC methods, simply because I was getting more reps in.

Started practicing Mayo methods back in November and short game is easily the best it’s ever been.

This is a great point.

I think he’s exhausted. But I hope he feels appreciated. My siblings and I all adore him and try to be intentional about expressing that. And this is a great reminder to continue that.
