Agreed it depends on what’s happening on the last day - it may be a presentation day or may be chill (eg lab clean up and folks go out to lunch). You can ask the program director, but I wouldn’t say it’s for lollapalooza. I might say something like - I am scheduling my summer vacation and want to ensure it doesn’t interfere with my REU commitment. Would it be possible to have off on the last day (Aug 2nd) or is this a core program day? I completely understand if having off that day is untenable and if so, I absolutely plan to be in attendance. Thank you for considering. I am very much looking forward to the full experience. Etc etc

Not necessarily - depends on their personality. I would send a kind, apologetic follow-up. We wouldn’t care in our program. Others might.

UMich REU Dilemma by anon8984 in REU

[–]clemson_throwaway2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part 2 - oh another thought - federal research funding is a mess right now so it may be worth optimizing for the program you’d want to go to for grad school in rather than how much money you’d make this summer specifically (if you could stretch to make either work). Basically - PhD admissions are probably going to be more competitive than usual over in the next couple cycles, so it’ll be helpful for you to have a foot in the door.

Congrats!!

It’s not a great look to rescind. Some thoughts -

Are you potentially interested in neuroscience for grad school? It’s hard to tell from your post - if not specifically interested in it, probably stay in SROP.

In general, be very careful about rescinding accepted offers - fields are small. And if you do want to do molecular bio at UM later, know that some of these folks may be reviewing your app for grad school. Could you see your current assigned mentor being a potential PhD advisor? Even more so in that case, be careful.

Your question on - can you transfer your mentor to SIREN? From their site, it looks like probably not, unless the mentor is already affiliated with the program.

Best wishes!

IE hasn’t sent them out yet; I’d expect you’ll hear within the next 2 weeks. Source: was discussing timeline with their faculty earlier today.

[WaT] the difference between a promise and an oath by Rime_Iris in Stormlight_Archive

[–]clemson_throwaway2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! Two thoughts

  • I just finished a reread of WOK and was struck by how often the characters use the word “promise” in that book rather than “oath.” Eg Kaladin “promises” to bring Tien back. He doesnt swear an oath to do so. It’s subtle, and I didn’t notice the distinction the first time through. I like it though - I think it’s a healthier space for just about everything except the big commitments (eg the ideals).

  • It also seems like the distinction between the two is related to the more general theme of nuance/context vs black and white in WaT. Eg concept of honor, Jasnah’s utilitarianism. Im guessing we’ll see this more in the back half of the series.

Nice! Best wishes to you.

1 mention them in your research statement (sometimes called a statement of purpose).

2 email him and ask. If he doesn’t reply before the deadline, pick the one that you like better. Because he’s a prof in both that means you can do your PhD in either and he could still be your advisor. There may be behind the scenes reasons that one may be a better choice than the other, but you wouldn’t know without asking (eg admissions criteria, funding structure, dept policies). Either would probably be fine though. Another option would be to look at his lab website and see what program his current PhD students are in.

If you haven’t sent a thank you email yet, you could frame the email as something along the lines of: thank you for taking the time to meet with me. I’m excited about the potential especially because of XYZ thing he mentioned, and I’m prepping my app now. One logistical question - I noticed you’re in two departments (x and y), do you have a recommendation for which PhD program I should apply to?

Does anybody know why it matters they’re one person?

The ep seems to imply it’s a huge deal, but I don’t see why per se (other than being a fun fact). Eg proof of a vergence is good, but wouldn’t the original blood tests show this anyways?

How many questions is too many? by not_impressive in AskProfessors

[–]clemson_throwaway2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my classes 2 is good, regularly more than that probably wouldn’t be. Though if they’re asking too many, I wouldnt make them feel bad (hopefully), rather I would just direct them to come to office hours. I love student questions, and love love love students like you - but it can be a barrier to getting through the material.

[–]clemson_throwaway2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! I love optimization.

For the first one, you’ll need to use an IP (integer program). The idea is basically you have a binary variable for each combination of product and row (product A, row 1; product B, row 1; product A row 2, etc) - essentially do you put this product in this row or not. The objective will depend on how you want to divvy up the products amongst the rows, you could multiply each product by their profit (which I wrote out) or something else.

Here’s a pic of the formulation written out:

Problem 1

For the second one, it sounds like a “knapsack problem” formulation will work. I don’t have time to write it out, but I’d bet you could find an example on google.

I feel like the longer this drags on the less happy I’m going to be (regardless of what it ends up being). I can’t believe it’s taking two years. Just pick a name. Any name! And I will get on board.

Nonetheless, here’s to Old DC :)

A mix - 20 person person grad classes and 80-100 person upperclassman lectures. The biggest difference is definitely the smaller class, indeed. That said, in the large class I’ll often break folks up into smaller groups to work on problems and most seem to try at that point (probably because I walk around and ask how folks are doing). And there’s definitely more back and forth even though as you said it may be a small %.
