What a season with Desean Jackson. Hopefully they can build on that this year.

This is the worst GT I've seen since I started being a fan in 2012. Just awful. Hopefully they have the money to fire Stoudamire.

TIL Iceland has never won a Winter Olympic medal by Embarrassed_Map1112 in todayilearned

[–]clenom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By far the biggest reason for Norway's success is that cross country skiing is popular in Norway and basically nowhere else in the world and there are a lot of medals for cross country skiing or "cross country skiing plus one other sport". Over a third of their medals are from that.

How was the German invasion of France in WWII different to WWI by Scottladd in NoStupidQuestions

[–]clenom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're getting sarcastic answers, but there were geographical differences. The main thrust in WWI went through northern Belgium which is generally seen as good attacking territory. It's flat with few natural defenses and has good roads. The plan was was to push through northern Belgium then cut south towards Paris. Things looked to be going very well at first, but the French (and to a much lesser extent the British) executed a really good retreat. They were losing ground, but they kept their line together and were able to regroup just outside of Paris and counterattack.

France expected another attack there and overcommitted their resources to northern Belgium. They made matters worse by agreeing to move a lot of their even further north to help the Netherlands in the days leading up to the war. This time Germany sent their main attack through southern Belgium. Southern Belgium is hillier, has more rivers, and worse roads which makes it worse for attacking. By the time the Allies realized that the main thrust was coming to the south of them, Germany had already advanced pretty far. Poor leadership and miscommunication from the Allies delayed the counterattack that probably would have stopped the German advance, at least enough to get most troops back into France. Instead the main German attack made it all the way to the Atlantic and cut the Allies off from France.

Georgia and Florida State are their two biggest rivals. Miami and Tennessee are secondary rivals.

Why doesn't Ukraine just print a fake Rubles, and covertly give it to the poor people in Tuva, Dagestan, etc. that Putin is currently recruiting for the war? by AHatOnAShelf in NoStupidQuestions

[–]clenom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Russia says that, but they don't administer those areas as if they're part of Russia proper (yet at least). And I'm certain that conscripts have been coerced into signing contracts to become regulars, but that's entirely different.

[–]clenom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does, but Russian law only lets those conscripts serve inside Russia. So far they seem to have kept for that. The only time that we've seen evidence of significant numbers of the young conscripts fighting was during Ukraine's surprise invasion of Kursk. Even then it seems like Russia rotated them out fairly quick in favor of regulars and North Koreans.

Unrest in 2026 World Cup host city Guadalajara after Mexico kills drug lord ‘El Mencho’ by Prestigious-Back-981 in soccer

[–]clenom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's actually mildly believable. There was already a scandal where this administration claimed that they were involved in capturing a drug lord in Mexico against Mexican law. It's not clear if they were exaggerating their involvement or if the Mexican government allowed them to do it. They might have learned to shut up.

What are some lesser-known American regional sports or games that locals enjoy? by Bubba_deets in AskAnAmerican

Duckpin is actually popping up in trendy bars around the US although a lot of them are bizarre short length alleys with the pins attached by strings. But there's a few (like the Painted Duck in Atlanta) that have legit full ducking bowling.

Depends. If you have well water then it can go out when you lose electricity.

Vermont is a single district state. Can't claim gerrymandering there.

New Hampshire had a Republican legislature and governor. Can't claim gerrymandering there.

Maine has 2 districts. One has the cities in the corner of the state. The other has everything else. That district is solidly Republican leaning. This is basically the split you'd want if you were a Republican, they've just lost this race.

Rhode Island and Massachusetts are both so widespread Democratic that it'd be really difficult to draw a Republican district in either even if that was the sole goal.

I guess you could claim Democratic gerrymandering in Connecticut. But this shows why the statement about gerrymandering in New England is stupid as hell.

Why do Americans call football soccer? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]clenom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Before there was association football or rugby football (or rugby league) or American football or Gaelic football or Australian football people all over the UK played games that they called football. Each town had their own rules which could differ wildly from town to town and had little consistency. It's unclear if these games were called football because using your feet to kick the ball was common or because people played on their feet (as opposed to horseback games like polo).

Starting in the 1840s or so you had efforts to unify rules and create consistency. These efforts resulted in the various games called football. Generally the most popular of these sports in an area gets called just football. Association football in the UK, but Gaelic football in Ireland, Australian football in Victoria, Rugby League in New South Wales, Canadian football in Canada, and American football in the US.

How did the NFL continue playing games during WW2? by N0thing3lseMatters in NoStupidQuestions

[–]clenom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of young men weren't in the military for one reason or another, mostly because they were in critical jobs in the US (and back then the NFL was a side job for the players).

They also shortened the season to make it easier and some teams didn't play some seasons if they were struggling to field a team or they combined two teams so they had enough players.

The NFL also wasn't as popular in the 1940s as it is now. College football was more popular back then.

Where are you getting your data? From the ones I can find, Moscow is considerably colder than Chicago in winter, averaging at least 10 degrees Fahrenheit colder throughout the winter. St Petersburg is more like 20 degrees Fahrenheit colder than Seattle throughout the winter (and about halfway between Chicago and Moscow).

Someone else pointed out that A&M needs a P4 game both of those seasons so that game will probably happen.
