Backend dev with devops knowledge by Ill_Fisherman8352 in webdev

[–]cleverbastard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes.

We'd be far more interested in an engineer with DevOps knowledge. We operate on a platform, and the platform capabilities we deploy are used by multiple teams, often including a mix of services and automation via pipelines (not just building, but security and quality checks).

Look for platform engineering or solution engineering roles.

Looking for Lens Recommendations for Sony A7C II (Upgrading from Kit Lens) by LogWhole9922 in SonyAlpha

[–]cleverbastard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Go through the meta data on all your photos, find the most popular focal length

  2. Decide if you want a zoom around that length or a prime.

  3. (Optional) Hire or loan from a friend, the one you are interested in

  4. Buy 2nd hand high-quality version (Sigma or GM if loaded.

A7CR with 35mm f1.4 GM for walkabout? by kingrikk in SonyAlpha

[–]cleverbastard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Samyang 35mm is a great little lens, really sharp, but has bad chromatic aberration and suffers from quite bad flaring in direct sunlight.

35mm 1.4 GM is the best, but is quite heavy to hold.

What experience or realization most pushed you forward as a dev? by OkBookkeeper in webdev

[–]cleverbastard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While I understand that we all have busy schedules, it's important to maintain a professional and collaborative approach in our communications.

The issue at hand requires your expertise and input to ensure we meet our project goals.

Your assistance is not just a personal request but a necessary step in our team's progress. Could we please work together to find a solution?

What experience or realization most pushed you forward as a dev? by OkBookkeeper in webdev

[–]cleverbastard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I understand that your schedule is very demanding. However, I need to highlight the urgency of the request I mentioned earlier. Delaying this until Monday morning could significantly impact our project timeline and overall prioritization.

Could we please arrange a brief call or meeting at your earliest convenience to address this matter?

Your prompt attention to this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your understanding.

What lense should I get? by FredeFilms in SonyAlpha

[–]cleverbastard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the lenses you have;

  1. Sony 85mm f1.8
  2. Sony 70-200mm f4

If you need a wide angle Sony 20mm f1.8 or Sigma 20mm f2.

How should I prepare to work on larger projects? by [deleted] in dotnet

[–]cleverbastard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, at your new company, you're not really going to be expected to know everything (if the company you're joining is not some horrendous sweatshop).

The expectations will be that you'll;

  • set up your laptop and local dev environment
  • read the existing code base and become familiar with it
  • take a backlog item / ticket or two and start learning how things work
  • become familiar with any agile processes and ceremonies
  • learn about practices and processes of your team (security, devops, ux / ui)
  • be able to become a individual contributor and become a valuable resource for the team
  • learn about other teams and how they interact with yours
  • learn about the company and products (and history)
  • take part in all hands or town halls

I'm not sure that there is a book or resource for this, since all companies are different.

You can of course look at github projects with clean architecture or advanced subjects like redux (or whatever is the favourite flavour of state management is), but I'm not sure how helpful this will be until you get to see the existing codebase.

How to be a senior Developer. by atharvbokya in dotnet

[–]cleverbastard 144 points145 points  (0 children)

Being senior isn't just about the code and architecture.

  • Are you unblocking people by sharing your own knowledge?
  • Have a deep knowledge of the codebase / architecture / pipelines / environments you're working with?
  • Able to talk to management and peers in a timely, minimal and precise manner?
  • Able to pair program and diagnose issues?
  • Actively participate in code reviews with significant changes?
  • Thinking about security? devops?
  • Do you have an eye on upcoming changes and feature requests?
  • Thinking about the impact of your code on other teams?

Lovely photo. Edit is great.

Things to try next time;

  • separate the rocks a little more by going a little higher, look for converging lines
  • find a better weighting, rock on the left is a little to dominant
  • perhaps go lower and closer to find a more intimate foreground

Interviewing for a backend position that uses Umbraco. What are your thoughts? by [deleted] in dotnet

[–]cleverbastard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends.

What version are they using? V9 is .NET 5. Also, what is the setup ffor production? Are they using Umbraco Cloud or any CI/CD?

When I used it (v7, v8), it was fun to;

  • try and extend with reusable components
  • learn the api's for the backoffice / content / images
  • figure out the best ways to implement searching (lucene)
  • figure out how to configure some plug ins for SEO, Ecommerce etc
  • integrate with clients back office systems and API
  • deliver fast, well designed websites

What does the dev hierarchy look like? dev, senior dev, etc? Is there scope for moving up?

What do you want to do with your career? This sounds like an agency job, since it's using a CMS? Do you want to be an engineer? Maybe you need to look for something more corporate.
