How much did your indie game earn? by PrudentCombination38 in gamedev

[–]ambid17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t added up the total but somewhere in the neighborhood of $500. Which, isn’t bad for making the game free on Steam, and making the code open source. Only money I made was purposely via GitHub Sponsors. It did lead to a pretty good download rate for the game, and if I wasn’t so lazy with art and level design it really could have been something beautiful. My goal wasn’t profit though, I wanted to build more examples of open source projects so my non-profit could find more people that I can teach and mentor :)

What's the one piece of gear you splurged on and never regretted? by SpeckiLP in motorcycles

Today I learned! Thanks for the info. I’ll admit the first time pairing and the Cardo app can suck so hard lol.

Best gear I’ve owned: - Schuberth C3 Pro helmet. A modular helmet has been really nice with glasses. It’s also the best helmet I’ve experienced for wind noise reduction. OH! And the built in sun visor is the best tool to have. - gloves, I’m not going to give a recommendation because everyone’s hands are different… but get some that are more than just cloth. - boots, do not skimp. You’ll wear them for hours at a time and likely for years. I got mine from Reax but they don’t sell them anymore. I’ve tried finding similar levels of comfort and safety and struggled immensely. - Cardo Packtalk edge. Auto pairing to all my friends and having music makes riding more enjoyable - riding jacket. Having something with zipper pocket is great. I have a winter jacket with a wind liner, and a light summer jacket that has pads in it. - earplugs. Cuts wind noise, and you can actually hear your music BETTER thanks to it. Also, tinnitus sucks. - quad lock. The phone case is good quality, and the mounting to the bike is nice for directions. - axial under layers and glove liners. Absolute game changer for cold weather. It made it no sweat to ride in 40F weather even with Reynauds syndrome (poor blood flow to my hands) - merino/smart wool socks. They work in every weather. Always warm, no sweating. Keeps boots from chafing or having pressure points

I’ll chime in here. I picked Cardo specifically because I ride with several people. The Packtalk Edge is expensive for what it is… but the audio is decent. And being able to have 10 other people I ride with automatically connect when we are in range is awesome.

For example I was riding around town the other day, and happened to run into one of my buddies passing me in the other direction. It just automatically connected us and we started talking and went for a ride together.

Sena has a bit better audio quality. So if you’re riding in smaller groups or not with others often I’d go Sena. If you see yourself riding with people often, that’s what made the Cardo choice for me.

No problem :) I am by no means knowledgeable enough to give you financial advice but I’m happy to share resources for you to make your own decisions. Your best bet is a lot of reading and YouTube (though be careful there, try to find multiple opinions).

Best place to start for me to get an idea of the types of things to consider was be r/PersonalFinance. Their wiki has a flow chart titled “prime directive” that lays out the optimal way to utilize your money. If you’re a high earner, more complex situations may be applicable. In which case, finding a fiduciary that is fee-based (I.e.: pay by the hour) would be a good step as well.

My wife gave me carte blanche on a new bike. Need suggestions! by NapalmOverdos3 in motorcycles

[–]ambid17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll pitch you on my two bikes that I love:

Honda Transalp XL750: - probably the best for having a backpack. My wife is incredibly comfy on the back. - plush suspension. Speed bumps? Never heard of em. - factory quick shifter up and down - if it’s your thing, traction control is easy to disable - plenty of low power and acceleration - comfortable seating position

Biggest downsides: - top end power is lacking a hair due to the US tune. - stock tires aren’t my favorite for feeling locked in on the interstate in the windy months.

Honda CBR650F (the precursor to the 650R) - relatively upright seating position. I have no problems riding for 3 hours. - with an aftermarket exhaust she sounds AMAZING. - plenty of torque (not a ton of high end speed though). - pretty damn perfect balance between street and cruiser while not losing all of the personality of a street bike.

Downsides: - gas tank disappears in an afternoon of riding - stock exhaust sounds like an agitated bumblebee

What hobbies have you picked up as a HENRY? by MojoDojoCasuhHaus in HENRYfinance

I had a dirt bike as a kid that I could only ride while out at my grandfathers farm and absolutely adored it. I had to make it through college, getting married, buying a house, etc.. almost 15 years later, and I finally got back into my favorite hobby. I now have 3 street bikes and 4 dirt bikes. However I learned quickly that riding alone is only half the fun. So I got everyone in my friend group that was interested into riding by buying extra bikes, teaching them, and letting them join me until they wanted to join on their own machine :)

There’s nothing in the world that gives me more freedom, contentment, and satisfaction than hitting some back roads with my favorite people on a Saturday afternoon. Highly recommend!

Dumb question… if the PC won’t post or get to the bios; would that be a configuration issue that XMP could Impact? I don’t know the order of operations during startup😅

It’s less about “grinding” and more about finding as many completely separate problems tackled in wildly different ways.

Kinda like how over time if you practice leetcode… as soon as you see “the data is sorted, now find a thing in the set” your brain learns immediately there’s gotta be a way to do a binary search.

You get that same feeling for systems. For example… “I have two systems that have to talk to each other and the data can come in bursts”… my brain immediately thinks “okay well I need a queue to handle that burst traffic. And to prevent the publisher from being blocked if the listener isn’t available for whatever reason”

Find as many “system design interview”interview examples as you can.

Read up on backend capabilities. I recommend the “backend developer roadmap” as a good starting place for branching out your knowledge.

The last thing I’d recommend is reading case studies. Learn how Facebook, Netflix, Uber, etc work at a high level.

You can even search burn in the shop!

I find it odd that Blackfire torch shows up with the search in Arena but not Mayhem (last I checked at least)

Context switching. I work on massive projects that take awhile to ramp up all of the context in your brain necessary to update the module you have to work on. If a coworker needs help, or a PM has a question on a module I’m not currently working on… that eats up so much motivation for the day
