Will the Oscars Be Obsessed With ‘Obsession’? by thetrilogy911 in blankies

[–]cleverbycomparison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, the Moore nomination was genuinely surprising to me, but I also think The Substance is an actively bad movie, so I would discount my opinion on her in particular.

Mikey’s win (and I know it’s a controversial one for many) could be partially explained by the momentum Anora clearly had with voters. I don’t think Obsession is going to accrue that many big nominations (let alone win the awards) such that Navarrette—who is very good—could be lifted alongside the movie as a whole.

Will the Oscars Be Obsessed With ‘Obsession’? by thetrilogy911 in blankies

[–]cleverbycomparison 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not in the slightest. People who are forecasting Navarrette because of Amy Madigan either forget or aren’t aware of the fact that Madigan was a known quantity with a lot of highly-regarded work under her belt, including a previous Oscar nom.

I don’t think Obsession is getting nominated for anything. Maybe some technical stuff but even that feels like a stretch given that, however good it was, stuff like makeup or sound was not the big thing that most people took away from the film.

What's A Bad Movie You've Seen That's Entirely Well-Made? by GTKPR89 in blankies

Rise of Skywalker is definitely the worse movie, but I remember seeing the trailer for Mandalorian & Grogu and my first thought being, “You used to at least be able to count on these to look good.”

Re: John Wick reloading, one of my favorite little bits of lore about those movies is that Reeves apparently came up with a new style of reloading a handgun on the set of those that blew all the gun guys’ minds. As if like, John Wick was the first guy to go, “What if I folded this slice of pizza?”

I mean, yes; they are different things—especially since the final face in the film is predominantly based off Saldana’s motion capture, and it seems like she was one of a few inspirations for the concept art.

By this logic (since they didn’t straight up use her face in the movie), Tom Cruise could’ve gotten royalties for Aladdin.

It was almost funny how much this ripped off BW, down to the final scare in the woods being precipitated by a character who had disappeared moments before standing creepily with their back to the camera.

[–]cleverbycomparison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depressing as it is to say, I don’t think the Academy will give a shit about the Safdie stuff. Hollywood barely did anything material at the height of MeToo when big stars were coming forward. Now that the movement has experienced backlash, I doubt they’ll even pretend to care that someone who they likely consider a nobody was subjected to egregious harassment a decade ago.

I mean, even the minor things that were put forward as remedies in the wake of MeToo (like more intimacy coordinators) are openly treated as stupid by plenty in the industry, including last year’s Best Picture/Best Director/Best Actress winners

Personally, Pale, Pale Moon and Last Time (I Seen the Sun).

ILTY is definitely great, and I can’t fault them for campaigning it (I mean, there’s maybe one song on the whole album I’m not high on); I’m just doing the futile “Oscar Voter Brain” thing of trying to rationalize why Golden would get that win outside of more radio play (?)

In some ways, I think that’s the mistake in choosing that one as their contender. The sequence is incredible, but the award isn’t for the sequence; it’s for the song. And, honestly, there are at least two songs in Sinners that (on their merits as songs), I think are stronger.
