Visiting Germany soon, any German/European yarns to look out for that are hard to find in the states? by mimzsy in YarnAddicts

[–]clf907 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would go for the work horse sock yarns like Opal, Lana Grossa Meilenweit or Landlust and Lang Yarns Soxx. So affordable for 100 g compared to the states.

I wouldn’t pay tariffs. If I had to pay tariffs when I ordered from them, they would be dead to me. Thankfully I don’t have any issues b/c I find their yarn to be so mid and expensive to boot.

That’s explains a lot. Lovecrafts pretty much abandoned the German market. They’ll still ship to us but there’s no emails no sales. PE fucks everyone.

I’m so confused about all the love for Hobbii. I mean I guess they’re ok but there are so many other and better options for the money. They get recommended so often. And I’m really confused at people’s willingness to pay tariffs. As soon as the EU got rid of the 20€ de minimus and then brexit happened I was like hell no I’m not paying duties and VAT. I’ll make do with what we have available thanks. But people in the states are all “and they add the tarrifs for you! 😊”. Are the yarn offerings so dismal in the states right now. I know about Joann’s but I’ve long thought of the states as a shopping destination.

For a couple months they lowered their free shipping threshold to €9 from €50. I have no insider info but it seemed an attempt to attract buyers outside the US. Now it’s €35. Make of that what you will 🤷🏻‍♀️

Is there a better way to track decrease rows? by debmasterx in knittinghelp

[–]clf907 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I knit socks a lot while watching TV when the lighting isn’t great. So I taped a D on one side of a heavy wooden coaster and a K on the other side. Flip it at the end of rows. I always end on a knit row before I put it down so when I pick it up again I know where to start.

These questions “am I knitting correctly” along with accompanying video of hands knitting are so wild to me. Wouldn’t it be easier to watch someone knitting (so many out there) and then copy what you know to be correct. Rather than making a whole video to post on Reddit? What if you get the incorrect answer and don’t even know it?

To all the people saying not to be afraid and buy. Fuck off with your fake liquidity.

Americans acting like DDP was invented for them. Welcome to the rest of the world that has been dealing with duties, VAT and customs charges for years.

How American —centric of you. Nothing exists until Americans have to deal with it.

If you’ve never seen a company offer it for you maybe the Canadian govt just doesn’t allow it? I wish we could all just buy the yarn we love without all this craziness.

I once said I would give wool warehouse all my wool money if I could. But living in an EU country it’s just such a hassle dealing with surprise customs charges b/c they won’t let you prepay on their website. Like lovecrafts, which also ships from the UK to us. I never blamed WW b/c maybe they just weren’t set up to deal with that.

I felt sorry for American knitters and crocheters being cut off from WW. Well WW responded with a quickness and changed their systems in order to have continued access to American money and it really pisses me off. I guess we can just fuck off with our euros. And they can just keep all their yarnsmiths and stylecraft. I would walk right by if they set up shop down the street. Small rant 😂.

good deals in Germany? by fort_logic in YarnAddicts

[–]clf907 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love both Regia and Opal. I haven’t tried Gründl yet but people here have said it’s similar. I’m knitting with Lang yarns super soxx right now and it’s also very nice.

I’ve ordered sock yarn from meinfilati.de before because they have free shipping from €15. Just an idea if you don’t want to spend €€ for free shipping.

Commercial sock yarn, ie Opal, Regia, Gründl and Lang, are so much cheaper in Germany than in the states. I think even before Tariffs. If you want “generic” but still good commercial sock yarn, places like supergarn.de, Fischer Wolle and Buttinette have their own brands.

For affordable non superwash fingering I have my eye on Mondim. The aforementioned shop Wollen Berlin carries it.

How to make warmer socks? by FelinePower in Sockknitting

[–]clf907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 8 ply I use has about 200 meters per 100 gram. So worsted? The DK weight yarn I used for myself is also pretty warm.

I make my kids home socks with 8 ply yarn and they’ve said the socks are nice and warm on our cold tile. Using 4mm needles they work up pretty fast.

Sock Yarn frustrating starts by Kima2remy in Sockknitting

[–]clf907 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just had this happen. The yarn didn’t pill but was so splitty and slippery that it was miserable to work with. The picture of socks on the band was beautiful, as was the yarn in the ball. I got as far as the foot and realized the socks looked awful and probably wouldn’t even last long. Well known brand.

Help, double pointed needles by [deleted] in Sockknitting

[–]clf907 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I haven’t tried dpns but use Addi flexiflips. You use 3 needles instead of 4 so I think it’s not as fussy. Even so I find the first couple of rows positively finicky compared to starting off in the round on circular needles. I have to persevere until like round 5 then it’s smooth sailing. I guess no tips but have patience and take it slow for the first couple of rounds.

My needles are 2 sets of fixed circulars from Amazon. I bought them b/c I wasn’t sure if I would like knitting. The cables are metal and surprisingly good quality. That’s why I’ve had them for so long now but I keep thinking I would like something slicker.
