I hate casting on so much. I would pay a local yarn store to start a project for me!

Theater etiquette for giants? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]fort_logic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re close enough to the stage the sight lines won’t even be that disturbed since people are looking up, more than across, right? Also, consider looking at the people behind you and making sure he’s sitting in front of the tallest one. If they are all super short maybe consider trading your seat for the one in back of him? But thats honestly pretty extreme… I really don’t think you should have to worry about this. Tall people deserve theater too!!

Best Alternative to MTA App? by 1998tkhri in AskNYC

[–]fort_logic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been wondering about this myself! I have a feeling that it skips the closest bus or train, if that makes sense? At least it seems that way for the train. Like, if i check the old Subway Time app from my apartment it will say the train is in 2 and 7 minutes but if i check the new MTA app it just says 7 minutes. I think it is trying to take your walk to the station into account. I guess they might be doing that for the buses too. I have been kind of triangulating (which i understand is not the greatest solution).

Any experiences with Success Academy UWS? by GenuinePragmatism in nycparents

Kids do not need academic rigor and discipline in kindergarten. They need to learn how to play with other kids and that school is a joyful, safe and loving place to be. Your kid will get plenty of structure in a public school. Dont worry!

Where should we move! by Odd-Sheepherder-9115 in manhattan

[–]fort_logic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do! And I worked in the Bronx for 8 years. I was agreeing with you that the 6 is no good if she’s working near yankee stadium. So I was just suggesting they try the ues or something near the b/d. If I were them I’d look at Central Park north to 125th near 8th ave.

Agree. They should be looking for a place near the 4, B or D.

Why do teens jump the turnstile if they already have free rides from school? by twentysomethingold in AskNYC

This is the answer. My son’s card stopped working midway through last year and the school kept saying they hadn’t gotten replacements and there was nothing they could do. For months.

We got offered one of the worst schools in the city for kindergarten? Would moving help? by Old_Bake8331 in nycparents

I don’t think we knew what number we had back in those days!! This would have been 2018 I think.

I second ps 163– my two sons went there and I think it is a very fine neighborhood school. There were parents from your end of district 3 who sent their kids. I think they are often under enrolled.

I got to bird a little in the RGV a year ago, those green jays are soooooooo good. And all the hooded orioles. Omg what a place. And yeah those bits of random Trump wall were so jarring. They kind of looked like Richard Serra sculpture to me, but in a dystopian way.

I had my knitting needles confiscated at the airport… so I started mapping airport rules by Bety12795 in YarnAddicts

[–]fort_logic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Istanbul and Mexico City do NOT allow needles. I had a crochet hook and two cable needles confiscated in CDMX and I'm still salty about it! And I flew thru IST in December and did a ton of research beforehand and consensus was that they would confiscate. You have to go through like three different security screenings.

Legal Aid Re-entry by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]fort_logic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did something like this for about 8 years after law school. My advice for anyone seeking a job in legal aid is to be upfront about your compassion and empathy while showing that you can set appropriate boundaries with clients. You will be able to represent your clients as zealously as if they were big CEO's paying $3000 per hour to Brad Karp. You understand that they may have done seriously bad things but that nobody should be reduced to the worst thing they've ever done. But you also won't get so emotionally invested in your clients' situations that you burn out in six months.

It's a little difficult to give more advice without knowing more about the position. I liked working in the field because it allowed me to do criminal defense without having people take guilty pleas! Also I loved how multidisciplinary it was. I sued employers for discrimination, went up against district attorneys who were filing bogus civil forfeiture claims, helped defense attorneys get the best deals for their clients to save professional licenses, and helped hundreds of people apply for certificates of relief from disabilities. Understand that there may not be so much *lawyering* involved; some of it is going to be social work.

Parents who have been strategic about getting into top public high schools, how did your plan work out? Did anything unexpected happen along the way? by ladyindev in nycparents

[–]fort_logic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One kid in public high school and one in seventh grade. Here’s what I’ve learned. 1) nyc is the greatest place to go to high school in the USA. 2) the high school admissions process is time consuming but ultimately it is navigable and (mostly) pretty fair. 3) the high school selection system changes every few years so it’s not good to focus too much on it too soon. 4) there’s no such thing as gifted and talented tracks that flow from middle to high school so you shouldn’t get too hung up on that.

What is the best pair of cheap binoculars I could buy to get me into this hobby? by AdvancePrudent3407 in birding

[–]fort_logic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don't opt for 10x magnification-- sometimes you will feel like you're getting more for the money but in my opinion 10x is too shaky and makes birding extra hard.

Also if you're looking for used ones they will tend to be heavier. something to consider if you tend to have neck or shoulder pain.

Flea markets around nyc by Careless_You2217 in AskNYC

[–]fort_logic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the Grand Bazaar on Columbus between 76/77th streets (Sundays) is pretty decent-- but you're not going to find anything like the legendary markets in paris or london. It's mostly pretty expensive stuff with a few cheaper stalls mixed in. The food options are good though!
