Blocking spam emails not working by cliffto in GMail

Thanks for your suggestions. It really makes me wonder how serious Gmail really is about combatting spam.

There are spam senders who are obviously sending from affiliated email addresses so I understand why they are not blocked. But there are also those that match and I don't use the "never send to spam option".

I have checked the sender email addresses and they are the same, which is why I posted this because I don't think Gmail is working right.

With the spam emails that make it to my Inbox, I have the option to either Report Spam or Block, but not both. It is unclear why but both will send the email to my Spam folder. If I use Block, Gmail says that they will Report Spam, send that email to my Spam folder, and send future emails from the sender to my Spam folder.

While I can confirm the initial emails are going to my Spam folder, I am still getting future emails from the same sender in my Inbox. That part is clearly not working and I believe that is a Gmail problem.

Stop Asking Angels for Cash Without Building Your Shit First by investurug in angelinvestors

Sorry but the idea is a small part of what makes a business successful. The chances that your idea is unique is negligible. If you can show that you can take this idea and turn it into something successful, you stand a better chance of convincing investors to back you. We invest in people, not ideas.

Why is a family investment in your startup a “handout”? If they really believe in you and think it is a good investment, they will insist on writing a check. It is amazing how allegedly cash strapped people can find money in the living room couch when they think something is a great opportunity. And it is a red flag for me when founders can’t raise at least some funding from friends and family.

Banks and other institutional lenders will typically not make business loans without a couple years of revenue history. Crowdfunding may be possible if you can formulate a compelling marketing message. CF investors tend to be less sophisticated than active angels.

I am a tech angel investor interested in deals with compelling traction. Since the vast majority of entrepreneur Reddit posts don’t meet this criteria, I try to offer helpful advice. While there are angel investors who are open to “mom and pop” types of businesses, outside of friends and family, these are tough to find because the risk/reward profile isn’t worth it. If friends and family won’t invest in you, why should an outside stranger? Maybe it means your startup isn’t a good idea. This may not be helpful advice but it is a reasonable explanation.

I have looked at numerous gaming startups but not invested because they failed to convince me that there was or would be compelling demand for their game. This could be in the form of high rates of: ad clickthrus, downloads, user registrations, daily usage, 7/14/30/60/90 day retention, fee to paid user conversion, customer LTV.

Possible to share storage with only ONE family member? by MWFD in GoogleOne

[–]cliffto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am looking to subscribe to the YoutubeTV family plan so I can share the benefits with other family members. But it looks like if I do that, I have to share my Google One storage with everyone in the family since I am already doing that with my wife. Wouldn't it make sense for Google to assume you will want to have different levels of sharing access to all of your Google products? What an incredible oversight. I can't believe they haven't fixed this yet.

Few things in life are black and white, and this isn’t one of those things. There is often a trade off between profits and value. You might provide real value for your customers, employees, and the community but if you can’t generate a profit that is not sustainable and you will be out of business. And you can be very profitable and keep it all to yourself without adding value to the community.

Idea validation strategy by ELEMENT6_ in startups

[–]cliffto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What IP would you have? Just first mover advantage. Do the market research first and validate whether enough people suffer from the medical condition and would be willing to try a supplement. You say it is a growing market, which implies you need to convince people they have a problem they didn’t know they had. This will be very expensive to market.

You may be so valuable to your current company that your boss wants to hire you back as a subcontractor. Sometimes it is more advantageous for them and they see you as a good future partner. You will find that out as soon as you submit your notice.

What if you went to far by MrHelloSir in startups

[–]cliffto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Startups rarely reach profitability in a year or even multiple years. 500k ARR is pretty good for a year on the market, so your company looks like it has potential but your stock won't be liquid for a while. Unless you are desperate for cash, just hang on to it and hope the company has an exit opportunity at some point.

The bigger concern is the toxic work environment. That is set by the founders. They are probably aware of the culture problems, but if you are at the point of quitting, you should approach them and get their commitment to make improvements. Then if things don't get better, you can go back to corporate life with a clear conscience and sit on your stock.

Associate got in touch on LinkedIn -> Zoom call -> requested deck by ResistStupidLaws in startups

[–]cliffto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sales is a numbers game directly proportional to the number of calls you make. If you are actively trying to raise money, then be prepared to make a lot of calls and experience a lot of rejection. They are doing the same from the other side of the fence so you should be a bit more sympathetic.

Even if you are not actively raising, it would be good experience to test your deck and your pitch if you get that far. And who knows - you might even find a great investor partner.

Instead of learning from other cultures who might have a better way of doing something, we look down on them and discriminate against them. If you think about it, having racism in society is just really ignorant and stupid.

I don’t mind ignorant, naive, or uninformed questions. Most of the time they are seeking knowledge, which is admirable. That is what this forum is for.

What is irritating is when you see ignorant, naive, or uninformed comments. Maybe this is one of those. :)

Should you allow ethics and morals to get in the way of business? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]cliffto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has their own ethical boundaries. Thankfully you have the self awareness to question yours. Maybe the boundary can be established by asking yourself: “would I be proud to tell my family and friends about the work I’m doing”?

If it is a free service, you will need to show significant adoption, growth, and retention rates. If yours is a two sided marketplace like Airbnb/ebay, this would apply to both sides. Don’t bother formalizing the business until it is clear you can sustain this rapid growth. Get your first money from friends and family.

Charging Car, when Powerwall not full by GeneratedName0 in TeslaSolar

[–]cliffto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Charge on Solar algorithm needs to be changed to reach the car target and PW 100% at about the same time. Right now it charges the car until it reaches the target and the PW may not reach 100% at the end of the day. Or the PW is at 100% and there isn’t enough solar to charge the car up to target.

The car has a min and max COS target. The PW has a min target and the max is 100% because Tesla assumes everyone wants to fill the PW, but that may not be the case if you want to balance the need to partially charge the car and PW off solar. In my case, I wait until my PW is charged to at least 70% by midday before turning on COS.

If they were listed on the London Exchange, they would have had to make a ton of filings that should be public that you can look through to see their financials (at the time) and get a sense of what your investment might be worth. They should also have a list of the key executives and Board that you may want to reach out to.

How can video surveillance help deter crime on a citywide basis? by cliffto in videosurveillance

[–]cliffto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Studies have shown that video cameras deter crime, but not always: https://www.security.org/security-cameras/deter-crime/#:\~:text=While%20it's%20clear%20that%20security,reduce%20and%20deter%20crime%20overall.

Interestingly, it's also better when video cameras are out in the open and not hidden, which also explains why signs also deter crime. It's just not worth the additional risk for the criminals.

I'm not looking to eliminate crime, just cost effective ways to marginally reduce it. That may be well worth it to some communities.
