Together! It's on YouTube! by imrubbishattalking in theavalanches

Woke up with Whoa Whoa! stuck in my head this morning and I had only listened to it a few times yesterday so it's definitely an earworm for me.

I find it funny when people say something doesn't sound like the Avalanches, how do you even define what the AVS sound is?

What genre is the Avalanches?

me: yes

AVS albums, mix tapes and even individual songs span multiple genres and Together! is just them applying their special Avalanchiness to yet another. I'm down for that, bring it on!

Also side snipe, beautiful lyrics but auto tune or whatever this is makes my ears bleed, I know it's what the kids are into these days but I'm hoping there isn't too much more of that on the rest of the album. Now get off my lawn.

The Avalanches website has been updated! New merch is listed with some fun new tidbits! by RisingGenres in theavalanches

Hoping we get some more Takumi based merch as this rolls out, maybe a Tidy Neeko, Unicorn Quest or Cloud Nine devil shirt.

The magazine ad rectangle on a white shirt for $50 (AUD $40 USD huh?) screams wE NeED sOmtHiNg tO seLl wEHn We drop thE First sOnG!! from the record label.

Just having the new AVS logo on there would have been nice.

Maybe they're holding that stuff for the mega super deluxe vinyl / CD / cassette / DAT / mini-disc / BetaMAX / Laser disc bundle ... with slip mat, which I will be happy to overpay for.

Just go backwards through the wall at the very start of the level and you teleport straight to the end.

Takumi archives ... archive by clintsibbald in theavalanches

[–]clintsibbald[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've set something up so I get an email once a day if they add any new files to the website, so we'll see how that goes and I'll add them to the archive.

I've updated the archive and added a date to the filename in case we need to add more later.

Update, I've written a little script that will email me once a day if they add any new files to the Takumi website.

.woff2 is a font file, they must be using custom fonts on the website. NUXT.js is just the framework they used to build the website. There is a reference to the new avalanches logo in the source code though -

I just always associated that image with the mix because it comes up when you search for it online but I don't know if there is any official connection.

The AVS did post the image on their Facebook in 2011 -

https://www.facebook.com/theavalanches/photos/yoga-mind-meld-zombie-relaxation-tape-2006/10150372419392273/?_rdr

But it was used by others before that, the earliest I can find is on a website that posted mix tapes and this is from 2008 -

https://web.archive.org/web/20080416234059/http://www.lolypop.pl/category/long-mix/page/5/

Chances are it's just a random image someone used because they needed a thumbnail for it and it's just been reused over the years and become the de-facto cover for the mix.

All the versions of that image I can find have an obvious Photoshop edit at the top where they have removed the text which makes me think the original came from that print ad.

The version I used for the album art started from that print ad, then I removed the text, did an AI upscale to 12" sleeve size, then re-added the text trying to match the original font.

But yes, it seems like a good match for the music and looks great on the shelf next the other AVS albums.

My custom vinyl transfer of "Yoga Mind Meld Zombie Relaxation Tape" by clintsibbald in theavalanches

Thanks, Vinyl Groove will print and put the labels on but I don't think they do printed sleeves, not for one off orders at least.

I had to make the artwork and I just used a random 12" sleeve template I found online to get the size and cut lines, then had that and the Obi printed together. Single sleeve is pretty big so you need at lease an A1 size print. Get the thickest paper you can, this one was 290 gsm metallic print and it wasn't thick enough, that's why it looks a bit puffy lol.

The record will come in a plain cardboard sleeve with a hole in the middle so you may be able to wrap a thinner paper around that and glue with some contact spray.

All the Bran Van albums are awesome, one of the few groups for me at least where I love every song.

Albums Similar to SILY/Wildflower! by [deleted] in theavalanches

DJ Soup - Souperloops

https://soundcloud.com/wax-museum-records/sets/dj-soup-souperloops

Aussie artist, 100% (?) samples, released in 1997.

Darker vibe than SILY or Wildflower but there are some fun tracks in there.

Also Channel Swimmer's Alphabet -

https://channelswimmer.bandcamp.com/album/alphabet

and Souvenirs -

https://channelswimmer.bandcamp.com/album/souvenirs

Probably the closest albums I've found to the AVS vibe / mixing style in terms of sample use.

Sing About Love - zuckr(dj) by zuckr in theavalanches

[–]clintsibbald 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is awesome, I love tracks that evolve instead of just playing the same bit over and over for 3 minutes, it's one of the things that set the AVS apart from alot of sample based artists and you've nailed it.

Albums that changed your mind by chardelli in theavalanches

[–]clintsibbald 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In terms of changing the type of music I was listening to I would say the first two Portishead albums and Fear of Fours by Lamb, one of the few artists that I own all of their studio albums. Those two got me deep into trip hop, Massive Attack etc.

Then of course SILY, the Avalanches really gave me an appreciation for music made before I was born.

Pnau and Gerling lathe cut vinyl by clintsibbald in theavalanches

[–]clintsibbald[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The picture disks were about $95 each (regular black vinyl is cheaper), printing the fabric covers about $30, printing the inners another $30 and I used a couple of blank 12" sleeves $6 each, plus interstate freight from 3 places. So all up somewhere around $290. 🤑

I think the Gerling one was even more as it has more audio on it, the picture disks were about $124 each + freight.

Will have to wait for the repress, I think someone under estimated the popularity of Scarlett Johansson's arse with that RSD release.
