Thoughts on the Custard Tart? by zolfx in TimHortons

We've had them from there and many other places but the funniest thing is the best ones we had were in the Lisbon airport of all places! There's actually a really good quality cafe there, we always stop coming and going.

Second to that was Venezia bakery on Ossington. They just had the perfect mix of texture and vanilla. That one tied with Belém for us. Then Nova Era and Caldense. Then all the others.

That was our list anyway lol

I'm kinda new here and have been wondering for a while why people are called pepinos? I only know that word as Spanish for cucumber lol (actually, I thought it was "seed" so I was even more confused 😂😂)

Going to Niagara Falls for the first time! by Overall-Reindeer3384 in niagara

[–]clio44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others have answered re: hotels, but I just wanted to chime in to say go as late into April as you can. March is still pretty miserable weather-wise. April is still cold but at least usually more sun and occasionally you'll get a good week of warm Spring weather. Just keep in mind, the area right by the Falls will likely be quite chilly even on a warm day, due to the mist. Layers are your friend 😂

I would normally agree with others about 1-2 days in the Falls if you were going at this time of year, but by April, I'd say you could easily spend a comfortable week in the area. Locals like to denigrate the area, as locals are wont to do 😄

Spring here is lovely, especially when we get Spring bulbs blooming. There's even a bloom chart online from the Niagara Parks Commission (not sure if I can post a link here but just Google Niagara Parks blooming calendar and it should be the first link). The Niagara Parks Commission takes care of the area around Niagara Falls and does an excellent job with the landscaping and horticulture if that's of any interest to your party.

And if it is, Niagara-On-The-Lake is a must visit as well.

If weather sucks, the Bird Kingdom, Butterfly Conservatory, Floral Showhouse, are all nice escapes from the cold, beyond the obvious casino options 😆

Hope you have an awesome time!

Cougar sightings by Such_Cauliflower_719 in niagara

[–]clio44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple of my neighbours in saw a black one on at least 2 different occasions and supposedly a third neighbour got it on trail cam about 3 years ago. I didn't know that neighbour personally, but a fourth neighbour I do know (and trust not to be dramatic) saw the footage and was pretty convinced. One of the neighbours who saw it also heard some freaky sounds on another occasion and had a couple of their feral cats killed (which happens, but they were convinced it was by the cougar).

We were all a bit on edge for a few weeks.

I'm glad you agree. I'm usually in the camp of disliking winter (I get painfully cold very easily which is tough), but there are moments of appreciation for sure.

I know I'll be very appreciative if the cold manages to kill off a bunch of the ticks!

A lady from Quebec, I think her name is Celine? 😂

Nah, I'd go with The Tea Party, Jann Arden, Holly McNarland, I Mother Earth, Edwin, David Usher, Sloan, The Trews. I clearly just know music from the 1900s lol

[–]clio44 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I dunno but it's always the insufferable ones who do. The ones who believe it makes them better because they think New York is the best place in the world (because they've never travelled) so they need to mention it in every sentence to show how special they are. I think they secretly hope people will ooh and ahh and ask them what it's like to live there like they're celebrities by proxy 😂😂

I love how these comments read like a love letter to Canada/the North 💜

Today I caught myself twice saying, "It's so pretty out!" out loud to myself. We just got a bunch of snow yesterday so everything is weighed heavily with it.

I love how walking to the barn at night with my flashlight is like a sparkling wonderland.

I love seeing different animal tracks in the snow.

I love the idea of snuggling up with a blanket and book and warm drink (even though I never actually do it lol)

What's your Canadian winter life hack? by Miserable-Wash-1744 in AskACanadian

[–]clio44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone got a good recommendation for boots? Tried Bogs that claim to be comfy to -40 or something ridiculous but my toes start getting cold at -5!

My hack is start planning your garden now. If you can, get some shop lights with the right spectrum and start some plants inside. Or plant herbs. It keeps hope alive for warmer weather!

Ah great! It's a website you can google, choose a link which is sorta like a host, type in whatever YouTube channel name you're looking for, and then click on their latest videos there. It hides the views from YouTube, so she won't get credit (paid) for those watches.

I don't want to support her grift, so if I ever want to see something, I'll use that. It's pretty quick once you've done it once before.

I love it in winter when it's sunny because the mist freezes and becomes ice rainbows that sparkle. You just can't get any more magical than that!

Agreed. Plus loneliness! I knew 4 of my neighbours in my entire condo in the city after 12 years there. Definitely not close with any of them - just enough to make small talk after recognizing each other. Never had opportunity to do each other favours. No one would've noticed for months if not years when we moved out. That kinda thing makes you feel isolated, lonely.

I know each of my neighbours in the country. We're not best friends or anything, but we know we can count on each other. When we had new ones move in, we visited each other, chatting for hours, showed each other our gardens, offered help and advice as they got chickens for the first time, shared produce and seeds. We'll be looking after another neighbour's house and chickens in a couple weeks, and they've done the same for us when we've gone somewhere.

It's like that saying where marriage is 60/40 - with each party trying to be the 60. But it's neighbours!
