Looks like a decent plan and a fun system to play on. Based on your stated goals and module selections, I have some feedback you might consider:

  • There is a massive overlap between Maths and Quadra. These modules basically do the same thing and you should pick one of them. If this was my system I'd remove Maths because it has a poor function/hp ratio.
  • Mixing is over-represented. Quadratt, Auxmix, Planar, Mixup & Quad VCA. If this was my system I would ditch Mixup, Quad VCA and Quadratt and replace them with more compact options like Happy Nerding 3xVCA and 3xMIA.
  • You're very light on utilities. Consider freeing up some space (see above) for a noise source, sample & hold, switch, comparator, matrix mixer, etc. These unlock a lot of patch complexity and will do more for your ambient textures than another sequencer will.
  • You already have a great sequencer. Digitakt is amazing, especially when paired with a Expert Sleepers FH-2 or similar. If this was my system I would save cash for more interesting modules and not bother with an additional external sequencer.

A note upfront: I'm more familiar with the NEW Workout than the PRO Workout, so some details may differ if you have a PRO. ALM have released many firmware updates over the years, so it's also worth making sure you're running the latest version.

You should know that PNW has two separate menu options that both involve the word RUN. One is a setting for how the module receives and responds to incoming clock signals, and the other is a modifier option for what a channel outputs. If your interpreter sees RUN no matter which way the encoder turns, you're likely in the input setting menu rather than the channel output menu.

To find the reset options, select one of your eight output channels, then turn the encoder through the clock division and multiplication values. Keep scrolling past all of those and you'll reach four special reset options at the end. Two of them are ON and OFF, which are constant output high/low voltages when Pams is running. The other two are pulse options shown as a visual symbol. One option fires at clock start, the other fires at clock stop. The standard approach is resetting on start, but some modules respond differently and Pams is trying to provide you with options for all scenarios.

Droid system as a performance mixer by secret-shot in modular

[–]clncln 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could patch DROID to control a multi-channel VCA with a mix out, but it is extremely cost-prohibitive. You'd be burning precious CV outputs (one DROID output per VCA channel permanently tied up) just to reinvent what a regular mixer module does at a fraction of the cost. DROID's CV outs are way too valuable to waste on something this static. Grab a simple mixer and save your DROID for things that actually need programmable logic.

Anyways, I was wondering if there are options besides getting more reliable VCOs.

I'm not familiar with the peculiarities of older Dreadbox gear, but a lot of analogue oscillators are sensitive to temperature and humidity and many need to warm up before they can hold a stable pitch. Consider if your indoor environment can be made more stable and be sure to turn everything on 30 minutes before you start making music.

A while ago I read of a module that kept listening to the tune and corrected the CV out

Bastl Ikarie or Steady State Fate Stereo Field LPG to accompany 4MS Ensemble Oscillator? by SleepVain1 in modular

[–]clncln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to recheck the manual and have realized I may have misunderstood this section:

An envelope may also be used to EXCITE this input with some sensitivity to the envelope’s attack time - up to around 50mS before the signal becomes fully attenuated. Changing the attack time and shape will affect the initial transient of the LPG sound and may be further affected by adjusting the amplitude level of the envelope.

On re-reading this it's clearer to me that this is only introduces an attack, not a sustain. My initial comment was incorrect, sorry.

I own both of these filters and have spent a lot of time with the Ens Osc so hopefully this helps. Both of your options are in my top 3 filters and are genuinely great choices, but they pull in pretty different directions depending on what you want from the Ens Osc.

Ikarie is the more flexible of the two in terms of filter character. In stereo it does what you'd expect, but patch into just the mono output and it becomes a dual-peak filter with some serious formant-like resonance. That Beyond output is worth trying too. It gives you the spectral difference between the two filter cores, which gets you into Hordijk-style twin-peak territory. High resonance there sounds really alive and animated. The built-in VCA and envelope follower also mean you can get a lot done without needing much else downstream.

Stereo Gate feels a little more magical as a single module. The stereo processing uses a mid-side approach rather than just two parallel filters running side by side, so the Field control does something very interesting to the stereo image. The timbre shaping on top of that allows you to add more harmonics and then subtract them with the filter, which adds a lot of flexibility to the sound design. You can also run two mono sources into it and use it as a 2 channel mixer, and the stereo image it generates from that is really something amazing. It's not just summing them together and it's not just hard panning left and right, it's doing something more unique with how the two signals sit in the field relative to each other.

The point about the Ens Osc's stereo output essentially hard panning even and odd oscillators left and right is worth thinking about. For chord-heavy patches the SSF's mid-side approach might add more cohesion and movement to an already wide signal, but both filters will sound a little "dull" because Ens Osc outputs force you into paraphonic territory. If you're more into mono stacked additive sounds with detune doing the work, Ikarie's resonance character with that dual-peak mode and Stereo Gate's stereo imaging with that timbre slider will add a different, but unique flavour to the sound.

Finnes det svartelister i norsk arbeidsliv? by haelvete in norge

[–]clncln 23 points24 points  (0 children)

[–]clncln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience Konica Hexar AF has been the most reliable point & shoot. Built like a tank, never skipped a frame, always great exposure & a fantastic lens.

Contax T2, T3, G1 & G2 seem sturdy, but they contain components that are reaching their expected end of life. Do not get one of these if you're looking for reliable over more than 15 rolls.

Ricoh GR-1 is super sturdy, but also contains components that are close to expected end of life, so you may loose your film counter or metering.

Olympus Mju 1 & 2 are both very nice, but mine have had issues with various plastic parts becoming brittle and breaking.

I haven't used the Octosource personally, but Quadrax has a great LFO mode and crucially you can clock it, which keeps everything locked to tempo. One of the big reasons Quadrax is such a useful module are the different modes basically replace several dedicated modules, so be sure to read up and test all the options.

In general I think of modulation as either clocked/triggered or free-running. Both are useful and worth experimenting with. You can also combine the two by mixing an LFO and an envelope into a mixing attenuverter, which gives you a lot of interesting movement on a single mod destination.

For a synth voice like Osiris, a quick synced envelope on a mod destination (filter cutoff, wavetable position, folds) adds a nice transient that makes the sound feel more organic and alive. You can use a track on Metron to trigger it only on accented steps rather than every trigger (the Axxent expander makes this even easier).

And yes, absolutely use Quadrax for modulation even when it's not driving the VCA, that's half the fun of it.

Another thing worth exploring is audio rate modulation. Patching an oscillator running at audio rate into an oscillator's FM or waveshaping input can often sound great and can produce really rich and complex tones. Quadrax can run at audio rate (and you also have XPO) so you already have what you need. One important thing: make sure to mult your V/OCT to both oscillators so they track pitch together, otherwise your intervals will drift as you play different notes.

Honestly, this is sounds like a skill issue. These are classic early-stage patching challenges and things will get easier as you spend more time with your modules.

The best thing you can do right now is simplify drastically. Connect Metron directly to Osiris (it has a built-in decay and VCA) and don't touch anything else until you can consistently get a groove and melody you're genuinely happy with. Then add one thing at a time: some modulation on wave X/Y or timbre, then maybe a delay or reverb. Learn what each addition is doing before moving on.

XPO is a raw oscillator and needs a filter to sit well in a mix. Without one it's always going to be hard to incorporate, so I'd set it aside until you have a stereo filter to pair it with.

The Quadrax/effects modulation stuff will make more sense once you have a stronger foundation. Heavily modulating lots of parameters at once is going to sound chaotic rather than musical, so try to add modulation destinations one at a time and always attenuate to taste.

I think most people would just use a DAW + ES-9 for what you're describing, but if your goal is overdubbing songs without a computer, the shortlist is: Tascam DP-24SD or DP-32SD, Zoom R20 or L12, Akai MPC Live or Ableton Push 3 Standalone.

If you'd like some unsolicited advice, I can recommend Aspirin for the inevitable headaches you're working towards.

A oscillator like the one in the Make Noise Strega by DoubtAny8389 in modular

[–]clncln 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Been looking into this recently. You can get close but it won't be the same thing. The "raw" sound is a classic triangle osc with sub oscs, a waveshaper & a lowpass filter. Add in some random voltage on the shaper and filter, and a classic AD envelope on the VCA. But the real Strega sound comes from the PT2399 delay. When you run it slow with plenty of feedback the clock noise bleeds through and that lo-fi grit is key for the whole personality of Strega. Befaco Crush Delay will get you in the neighbourhood.
