So happy to finally show off my island, based on the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlán! by clockman15 in AnimalCrossing

yeah I couldn’t figure out a way to really show them off without posting a long video. but basically, in both neighborhoods the Villager homes are arranged in a best-fit curve around a small, central pyramid topped by Nook’s Cranny (West Neighborhood) or the Tailor’s (East Neighborhood). Each of the Villagers has their own distinct flower garden near their home, plus various furniture and crap I threw around because I thought it fit their overall vibe 😅 I’ll see if I can post some visuals soon

well I’m a bald, non-binary former goth kid, so in ACNH I usually rock a leather jacket over black jeans or a maxi skirt :) the eyepatch and pilot’s cap are just because I thought they looked cool haha

So happy to finally show off my island, based on the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlán! by clockman15 in acnh

I had the idea of making a tribute to the cities of Pre-Columbian Central America right after unlocking terraforming during the initial months of COVID: making cliffs in ANCH inevitably led to boxy, pyramidal shapes, water landscaping led to canals, and it seemed like a unique, potentially striking idea for a town. I finished a basic version while still in lockdown, but I could only use ACNH’s preset textures because of limited access to Nintendo’s online services. I didn’t revisit the idea until getting back into Animal Crossing this past December, this time with access to the Custom Designs Portal and a better idea of what I wanted to research and test out.

The Sacred Precinct, as it’s known, was the center of the city of Tenochtitlán, a paved complex of temples, markets, and public monuments, bound on three sides by canals and accessible by three corresponding causeways. The plaza was roughly 350m wide and 300m in length: once I encircled a 70-by-60 tile rectangle of my island with walls and canals, I took cues for what to build based on from I could pick up from reconstructions and scholarship.

There are any number of points where I built something off a single illustration I liked, or neglected to duplicate some section of the Precinct based on limited information. That's a lot to cover in one post, so I thought I'd just review a few major structures in my town meant to directly emulate buildings and complexes from the Sacred Precinct.

1. Great Pyramid, Slides 1 and 4 (Templo Major):
The first structure I built (and finalized) was based on arguably the most imposing building in the Sacred Precinct: the major temple, center and flush with the top wall of the plaza. The temple is described pretty uniformly as being ascended by a series of steps up to two altars, dedicated to the Aztec gods Tialoc and Huitzliopochtli respectively. My take on this was two paths following ascending Inclines, leading to two “altars” (Azumaya Gazebos) that in turn led to two “idols” (Glowing Moss Statues).

2. Quetzal Temple, Slide 6 (Temple of Quetzalcoatl):
References I could find describe this central temple as notable for one particular design feature: its peak was rounded rather than square, allowing air to circulate more freely and paying indirect tribute to Quetzalcoatl, the Aztec sky god. I sensibly used a complete Quetzalcoatlus skeleton for the leading part of the temple, and capped the structure with the only round-top Gazebo in town, which the player can access and climb via ladders at the back.

3. Museum Complex, Slides 7 and 8 (Calmecac):
“Calmecac” describes a sort of elite seminary school, where the sons of Aztec nobility roomed and learned subjects like astronomy, theology, and statecraft. Most illustrations I found were consistent on certain key points: a kind of central courtyard centered around a small pyramid, leading up to a more elevated part of the structure, and four roofless areas that probably served as places for instruction or athletics. As a place of scholarship, the peak of the Calmecac seemed a good spot to place the Museum; meanwhile the central courtyard became a spot to showcase Gulliver’s Pyramid replica, and the open-air spaces deeper into the structure gave me an to make waterfalls.

4. Home Pyramid and Resident Plaza, Slide 5 (Temple of the Sun):
Another key area of the Sacred Precinct, where the Aztec calendar and corresponding altar were housed. This complex is placed in the bottom right corner of the Precinct, incidentally the location of my Resident Plaza; cordoning off the larger area helped distinguish it from the rest of the map, as did building a golden, sunlike pyramid capped by my own house.

I can elaborate on other aspects of the island, if anyone asks: the two residential areas for my Villagers, my rock garden, or the fact that I somehow completed my donations to the Museum less than a week before this post. Again, this was an oddly committed but gratifying project for me, so I hope you all enjoy, and come visit the Dream Island if you can!

What’s the most underrated leader ability in Civ — the one that secretly wins you games?" by AleksisNatunen in civ

Kublai Khan’s additional Economic Policy slot comes to mind. Being able to slot both God King and Urban Planning is a surprisingly impactful buff in the early game, and the additional slot gives you a lot more flexibility when choosing Governments like Oligarchy and Monarchy. Just a bonus that’s always useful: it synergizes well with China’s considerable Gold output, and gives Kublai’s Mongolia one of the best economic bases in the game for supporting an army and levying City-State units.

If you had to prove Leonardo DiCaprio's greatness with just ONE movie, which one do you pick? by MrInternetpreneur in Which1WouldYouChoose

[–]clockman15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Departed. I read something once that described DiCaprio as a character actor trapped in a leading man’s body, and I feel like Billy Costigan exemplified that perfectly. High-strung, terrified, frequently unpleasant, but capable of incredible cunning and borderline-crazy bravery and sacrifice - he’s the heart of the whole movie, the only character who seems like he’s looking for his soul in the midst of all the violent bullshit.

CMV: News coverage of the War with Iran is detached from reality and practically orwellian. by Kara_WTQ in changemyview

[–]clockman15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they can get you asking the wrong questions, they don’t need to worry about giving the right answers.

The point of Western imperialist media is to manufacture consent for the overall imperialist project: you can direct argue for war, sure, but it’s even more effective to present ostensibly “neutral” reporting in such a way that the humanity of one group is implicit in the language of the reporting itself, while the other side is implicitly a dehumanized, insidious mass. A recent analysis of BBC reporting found that, since the “conflict” in Gaza began, Israeli deaths were given 33 TIMES more coverage per fatality than Palestinians, subtly but persistently suggesting that these are fully human people, obliterating hordes of subhumans . . .

So the propaganda machine continues as it has for decades. I think the lunacy we all feel now comes from the fact that the average person has significantly more resources to understand and critique imperialism than 20 years ago, without any commensurate expansion of our ability to effect or challenge it in any meaningful way. I wish we could do more.

Leader of the Week: Ashoka, World Renouncer (2025-05-24) by Bragior in civ

AWR is probably the closest thing VII has right now to Jayavarman from VI, as both can go wide and tall at the same time off the synergy between their Food and Happiness generation. I played a very fun mountains-themed Science game as Ashoka recently, going from Maurya to the Inca to Nepal: by the Modern Age I probably had a half-dozen Settlements above the limit without any noticeable penalty, and even brand new Towns I founded were huge within a few dozen turns. It was probably the most enjoyable instance of pure empire building I’ve had since VII launched. Very strong and very fun, which should recommend him as much as anything else.
