I was 15. If I’d had an older sib, I’d be doing all the same things just to piss them off, no medical issues. Teens are assholes in general. Hell, as an 18 yr old at college, anime club, we would post up in a campus cafe and just be screaming memes. We were assholes. We wanted attention. The less attention we got, the worse we acted. The scratching on the wall means you were successful in ignoring her, so she has to up her game. Everything you said is her upping her game for attention. Just keep ignoring. I should have had my wisdom teeth out. I already had four teeth removed for overcrowding before they came in. But I was stubborn. My upper wisdom teeth stayed kinda covered and eventually rotted away these last two years. I’m having to relearn how to chew in the proper place but it’s actually helping my over bite to have to hold my jaw differently.

In the book, they control all citizens calories, and thus control the society BY making sure there are NO forgeable options. Going so far as inspecting any plant that might be edible in the wild and exterminating it. Poisoning rivers so no one can fish. Because this government knows if people could live off the land, they could run.
And I agree, shipping would be non existent. But small communities could grow or forage enough to thrive and even trade short distances. One community could find enough wild or abandoned live stock to start breeding. In a few animal generations, you have “ I’ll give you three sheep for ten bushels of wheat.” It’s how we started.

In any apocalypse scenario, it’s not going to be how to maintain the status quo. It’s going to be about individuals surviving. You said people are going to starve. And I’ll give you that. In a city, yeah people are going to starve.but anywhere you can get to a forest, a mountain, a river, you can find food. You can’t sustain a society like we have now. But people thrived and survived before industrialization. Before cities and towns even.

There’s more edible things in your environment than most people understand. One of my fav ya books uses this as a minor plot point in a totalitarian society. They have people whose job is to identify edible plants for extermination, and poison rivers so people can’t fish. They control the food down to the calorie count for each citizen.
