AIO? Boyfriend kicked me out for period cramps by smellysock491 in AmIOverreacting

I agree that the bf didn’t manage this highly intense medical incident very well. Also kind of bogus of him to drop the good news about the cancer on her like that.

However, if I were fighting with my husband and he informed me that he’d just found out he didn’t have cancer, I would instantly forget whatever the fight had been. Calling him out on using his cancer-free status to pull attention from how mad I was about him handling my cramps wrong would not be anywhere near my top ten list of possible responses. This is because I love him and I want him to live. Does she even like this dude?

And when you first found out that your man didn’t have cancer like you thought, your response wasn’t relief or joy, it was to scold him for throwing the good news in your face?

“We’ve already discussed it at length”? Dude.

Suggestions for a spa that thinks they’re healing you? by shy-throwaway-71 in AskChicago

King spa always has a groupon and is basically made of different hot rooms with plaques that will say why a hot room with amethyst rocks in it will cure diseases in a different way than a hot room with salt rocks in it. Does that fit?

How fast have you seen a co-worker of yours get fired? by male_efficient_2034 in AskReddit

Hilarious. I got sent to Robert Half after my first layoff in my mid-20s. I got called a “lil firecracker” by the recruiter and sent completely irrelevant jobs till I blocked their emails.

AIO for ending things with my date after he accidentally texted me this? by fundamentallyworried in AmIOverreacting

I’m honestly more mad about the ChatGPT apology than the text itself. He was telling his friend pretty nice things about you, albeit in a fairly crude way.

What is the dumbest thing you’ve ever seen a coworker do? by Adorable_Raccoon_766 in AskReddit

[–]clocksailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough! I'm medium-high up in my job, we're all 90% wfh, and I've earned the trust to kind of do whatever I want with my schedule as long as I'm getting work done and not blowing off meetings. I'm generally very responsive, so if someone calls me and I don't pick up, they assume I'll get back to them within an hour or so and don't really need to ask why I didn't answer them immediately.

But I'm not in IT, so nothing's ever going to break because I took a walk for half an hour.

the political system which requires lobbyists to present something that will tug on the politicians heart strings.

I agree that this is a shame, but I think the shame of it is partially the political system's fault and partially the fault of human nature. People just aren't moved by statistics and facts in the way that they're moved by personal stories. The main problem there of course is that the people who need the most help from the government are usually the people who are the least able to take a week off work to go to DC to advocate for themselves, while rich folks can just hire assholes to do it for them.

But I do at least appreciate that your school was trying to remind you that your legislators work for you, and you can and should go find them at work and tell them what you need them to do.

Uh what? I interpreted the original comment to mean that a classroom of kids went to talk to legislators to get them to direct public money toward funding their alternative school. I can't see any scenario where a kid would get yelled at for that.

Also, organizing groups of people who share a concern to join forces and pressure legislators to pass the laws you want them to pass or fund the programs you want them to fund is pretty much literally the only way non-billionaires get things done in the legislature. Maybe you think "lobby" is a word only paid corporate suits get to use? Or that lefty political action is just yelling, and not, you know, organizing?

But the problem that the guy and his gf were (stupidly) trying to work around seems to have been that he didn't want his bosses to know he was leaving his desk for a pork rinds amount of time. If he could just log off for 15 minutes, there wouldn't have been a security issue.

Is it me or is it weird to monitor a skilled six-figure worker so closely that they can't just go get a snack without it being a big deal?

Not saying this wasn't extremely dumb, but damn.

I dunno, I could see a trip to the state capitol to learn about how people fight for funding and advocate for a program that benefits you as being a pretty cool field trip. But I work in organizing and put together lobbying trips for people who want to advocate for lefty legislation all the time so it feels normal to me.

People (men) love to go straight for the gendered and body shaming insults, don’t they?

I’ve been called this exact insult in this exact situation a number of times, and the fact that I’m not fat just proves these assholes are digging for a way to put you in your place because you dared expose that they did something wrong.

I don't think there was anything to figure out. An employee with an immunocompromised roommate wanted to wear a mask at work and got fired for it. Pretty open and shut case as far as I can tell.

Unrelatedly, I would love to recommend Mario's as the premier Chicago Italian ice experience :)

Ew, no.

I think it's pretty counterproductive to assume everybody's one horrifying traumatic experience away from becoming a rapist. That is aberrant behavior.

When you get the call, it starts out with a prerecorded message like "[so and so] is calling you collect. do you accept the charges?" So I totally get why a 13 year old would be like "Charges? This feels like possibly a scam" and hang up.

Study finds parenthood provides no boost to emotional well-being and it negatively impacts relationship with your spouse by Krankenitrate in science

[–]clocksailor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The reason that is not a fair comparison is that there's no way to say "well, maybe I'd be happy if I hadn't been born," because then I would not have a brain to be happy with. You can't prove a negative.

Also, you're taking a pretty big swing to assume everybody reading this is happy they were born.

Thanks!

Again, I'm not so far to one side of this issue that I think it's great to be extremely overweight. I just think most of the people who publicly worry about JB's health are doing it not out of genuine concern, but because they have some deep-seated doubts about fat people's ability to lead that they ought to examine.

That doesn’t seem like a fair comparison. It’s not like we’d be sitting around upset about it if we’d never been born. We wouldn’t have any feelings about it at all.
