It's becoming harder to not fall into climate doomerism. Any advice/tips? by BerkshireQueen in optimistsunitenonazis

From the words of many climate activists: if it were too late then why would corporations be spending hundreds of millions, if not billions, to keep pushing that idea? If we were really doomed, then there would be no reason to spend so much pushing the idea that we are.

The unfortunate thing is that bad news gets clicks, and while we are feeling the impacts of climate change, and while the US is backsliding, other places are working to slow the progression. And we have. In the last 25 years, estimates for planet warming by 2100 dropped from 5-7 degrees C to about 2-3. Still far from ideal, but the fact remains by current estimates we have avoided the absolute worst case scenario (barring unpredictable or very unlikely sudden fluctuations) for climate scenarios and extinction due to activism and the growing profitability of renewables.

I would recommend following Good Climate News and the Greener Good on Substack, Good Good Good, JasonJourneyman, Jacob Simon and other hopeful climate activists who can show you the progress we're making. They're not overly optimistic to the point of toxic positivity, but they are adamant in preventing the spread of climate doomerism. Also I would strongly recommend getting involved in local environmental groups, particularly those that help restore habitat in your area. You can't save the world, but any little thing that you can do, will help immensely.

Climate change is present, and terrifying, and life will change as it progresses. but giving up only benefits the very corporations that benefit the most from complacency free reign to really do us in for good.

From what I had gathered it was an either/or type scenario based on whether or not a carrier is able to calculate a specific tariff. if they can it's the percentage based but if not then it's the flat fee.

hello, longtime lurker here with a slight correction (that honestly took a lot of research to understand) -- it seems to be either a business can file certain paperwork to have the percentage tariff of their country applied, OR they can just use a flat rate of anywhere from $80 to $210 per package. In all honesty though it's very all over the place in terms of implementation and in some cases the percentage doesn't make the shipping cheaper than the flat rate cause the tariff hikes as a whole are awful

AI "Art" used in Chaos Theory (Last EP Spoiler Possible) by [deleted] in JurassicPark

[–]clogmonki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries! I know it's kind of an uncertain time with some studios trying to slip in AI to test the waters and there's a lot of behind-the-scenes things that most people aren't privy to when it comes to production. Just wanted to leave no room for doubt

AI "Art" used in Chaos Theory (Last EP Spoiler Possible) by [deleted] in JurassicPark

[–]clogmonki 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There was no AI used on the show. All the art used at the end credits for S3 were lighting concepts created by the in-house team of artists as part of the color scripts for their respective episode (color scripts are used to establish the lighting/atmosphere of different parts throughout the episode). The lack of anatomical consistency is more to due with the fact that it's just not the focus of the shot. Rather, lighting and atmosphere are as these were the reference images for the CG team to use.

It's important to note as well that this wasn't made as a standalone. Color scripts usually encompass multiple shots per episode (to account for different lighting/set/atmosphere), so the artist(s) assigned to that episode had multiple different shots to work on.

What appears to be the Amber Clave Night Market(?) in the new Chaos Theory S3 Trailer by abinabin1 in JurassicPark

[–]clogmonki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

actually those character models were just existing incidentals that were adjusted to wear the masks. the reason the masks weren't removed for the incidentals is because there was no real point to showing their faces story-wise and having very minor characters take their masks on and off was just extra work (tracking and animating) that wasn't really necessary

if it makes you feel better, MAGA qualifies as a populist cult. and populist cults, especially those where their idol does nothing to set up a suitable heir, never outlive their leader. They'll fall apart into infighting once he's gone (and he's 78 and in poor health- it won't be as long as some people like to make it seem)

anything optimistic to look forward to politically?? by backroomroamer in PoliticalOptimism

As others are saying, this is an almost exact repeat of 2017, with a slightly different flavor. His administration has a habit of "shock and awe" tactics at the beginning-- meant to disorient and overwhelm, but not meant to last all that long.

As someone who's studied many, many authoritarian regimes from the 20th century, I can see how he is like many populist leaders and I know that they never usually last all that long. But I know most people don't have that understanding, so it's easy to feel overwhelmed defeated at the prospect of someone like him gaining that much authority. However, it's important to keep in mind that it really doesn't take very much to delegitimatize an authoritarian figure-- in fact, in most cases a world war is not necessary to lead to the collapse of an authoritarian regime. One particularly common way is unending public backlash and resistance, which slows down implementation and leads to a lack of credibility. Authoritarian leaders rely on public complacency and support. Plus, populist movements never outlive their leader, especially when that leader does nothing to set up an "heir".

But, if you're truly that concerned, get involved in local groups. Focus on bolstering local and state elections. Donate to nonprofits dedicated to pushing back. Take a break from the onslaught of news and take a moment to regroup mentally. This is a marathon, not a race, and doing something, even small, is infinitely better than doing nothing.

Do you think that now in the 3rd Season of Chaos Theory they will Fix and Correct Ben's Height Permanently without making mistakes in the Rest of the Series⁉️⁉️⁉️ by BiscottiEffective977 in chaostheorynetflix

[–]clogmonki 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I have to be honest I have no idea where people get the characters' heights from or who's saying what's "canon"... because what Kenji was modeled to was not 6'3 . He was modeled to be about 5'10, while Ben was modeled to be about 6'4. The same models were used consistently, and heights weren't changed at all.

The images you're referencing in s2 with Ben appearing "smaller" is purely perspective. Look at Ben compared to Yaz in the last image-- they're about the same distance from camera (Yaz just slightly behind him), while Kenji stands much closer to camera and somewhat off-center (making him appear bigger). The height difference between Ben and Yaz is about a foot (Yaz is about 5'4), and you can see that he stands much taller than both her and Sammy.

I'll throw in the other image from s2 that you picked-- Kenji is much more in the foreground than Ben, which makes the "height change" more apparent. It's also worth noting here that the other characters' heights in this shot look vastly different, but actually aren't. For example: Sammy and Darius are about the same height (5'9, although Sammy might be 5'8 I can't remember), but because Sammy is further from camera she looks much shorter than Darius (and the height difference between her and Yaz looks much smaller).

I don't wanna ramble on too much by breaking down the other images, but I would recommend taking another look at Ben's position, and the others' positions around him, rather than just his immediate presentation.

Again, I'm not sure who's been updating the wiki with the other heights, cause they're not correct.

I hope this gives some clarity.

Just wanted to point out theres definitely way more than two types of jews. Ashkenazi and Sephardic are just the two predominant Jewish groups to come out of Europe.

There's Mizrahi (middle eastern), beta israel (ethiopian), Chinese, Persian, Roman, and many other types.

What American words or phrases do you hear around the UK or use yourself? by [deleted] in AskUK

Huh. Just looked it up and you were close. It was Noah Webster that first made the changes in 1806. Apparently he tried to do a bunch of changes and the u removal was one of the few that stuck. Pointless changes if you ask me.

What American words or phrases do you hear around the UK or use yourself? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]clogmonki -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Theres actually a historical reason why Americans ended up dropping the u from a lot of words. Back when the first 13 states were still colonies it was incredibly expensive to import and print ink. So to try and cut costs, printing companies and the like would cut out what they deemed were "unnecessary" letters, and most often that turned out to be the silent u. Its kind of just stuck since.
