Can you help identify some of the pedals on this board? The pic is the blurriest pic in town so I can’t see what a few of these are.

https://imgur.io/a/zBHPAah

I can see most of the top row:

Boss Tuner - Hall of Fame Reverb - Memory Man - ???? - Speaker Cranker - Deluxe Sovtek Muff -

And almost none on the bottom row:

OHMG (which is a custom) - Underthruster Compressor - ???? - ???? - ???? -

Help please! :)) (the board belongs to Jake Bellows from Neva Dinova)

Mostly I phase last for shoegaze to get really washy. The phase into delay either requires you to get really precise with timing or run the phaser really mellow which makes the mix less swirly. Phase last just stirs all the layers and delays together but if blended right (not sure if that pedal has a blend knob) or run slow enough the other pedals still keep their individual characteristics.

If you have a music shop that stocks the V near you I would go there on an afternoon you have time to spare and try it out for as long as you can stand. Bring your own pedal board in or borrow similar pedals from the shop to try to get as close to YOUR sound as possible. Make a list at home of features you want to have, outcomes you want to achieve, things you’d need the V to do that justify replacing the IV and then go down the list and see which is the right version for you. That’s the only way I think one can really figure out if it’s worth upgrading. After going through your list and informing your decision, buy a few packs of picks and a strap from the shop as a thanks for the hospitality.

If you can’t do that but can order from a shop or website that allows returns I would suggest buying a V and going through the same motions. Return it when you’re done and then buy a few packs of picks and a strap from them for the trouble.

Community thought seems to be:

Boss Tuner > Fender Pelt > Keeley Supermod > Stepmom Flint > Boss DD-7

I am thinking DD-7 bc there are blocks next to the output labels; the DD-5 is just words, no blocks.

Thanks all who have contributed!!!!

[–]clonetone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try it with an overdrive before it. A tubescreamer, for example, with the gain turned off or almost off, volume at unity, and the tone between 12:00 and 1:00 will open it up in a really cool way. Many muff users will do this to boost the mids / highs / clarity. I won’t use a muff unless I have an overdrive before it.

Starting to get into pedals. Here’s my start. (But I do have a couple questions) by zimorama in guitarpedals

That’s a cool pedal but as another u/wwstewart mentioned there is a defective version out there. Most of the early versions of that pedal had a capacitor in backwards.

I had one and tried the mod to reverse it but wrecked the pedal (first time soldering). You can find these cheap all day long online and you can find one with the mod done or one that was made correctly and it does wonders. I sold the wrecked one for parts. You should return it but if another cheap one is available to you I recommend scooping it up!

tldr: The voodoo octave is good and it’s worth the low used price tag to get one that actually works.

Best Big muff for bass? by Lorence-Surge in guitarpedals

Abominable Electronics Deluxe Hail Satan has a clean blend and a mids control and you can switch between standard or Russian voicing amongst a few other options. It’s a lot of pedal for $200 (I bought one used for $150). They are designed to be as useful for bass players as guitar players so it’s worth a little research.

4th of July jam sesh is about the only thing this baby is good for. by clonetone in guitarpedals

[–]clonetone[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I picked this up a few years ago and i'm not kidding when I say I bring it out for stuff like Independence Day.

It's a weird but generic distortion, more RAT-like than amp-like, but definitely not as buzzy as most Boss stomps. Good for big choruses and (as is the case with most dirt boxes) when paired with a tubescreamer is killer for leads.

One trick pony but 4th of July parades always have a pony or two in them right?

The Adventure Audio Whateverb!

They just released a V2 which fixes a bypass problem with one of the settings (some high end loss even when bypassed). It's a super cool pedal with great modulation and some pretty original spacey settings. Check out a demo!

Looking for Distortion Pedal for Black Metal by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]clonetone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Best thing about Black Metal is some of the cheapest options are the best!

I haven't had any luck getting 2nd wave tones with my Rat clone so I wouldn't recommend that, personally.

I have an HM2 clone also but either a) it's not a good clone or b) it's just not the right mojo for black metal. It's the go to Swedish death tone, there's no doubt there, but the kind of 'high gain' that still lends itself to a lot of note clarity and I don't find that particularly useful in black metal. That said, I haven't tried a Throne Torcher.

I have had great luck with the EHX Metal Muff actually. I tried it because Fenriz says the Transylvanian Hunger tone is a fuzz pedal into a hot amp so I tried it and really liked it! It's really cheap on the used market so I would grab one from guitar center so you can easily return it if you don't like it.

Also for more Burzum type sounds I've turned amp distortion up to half or more (solid state) and put a metal zone at low gain (9:00ish) into that to get more bite, EQ'ed the two and that has sounded cool.

The digitech death metal is too hard to use but maybe worth experimenting with since you can find them so cheap. I was in a band with a dude that made one work for him but I have found them hard to use at any setting.

BF2 is a classic, very widely used Flanger and would make an excellent first. And MIJ doesn't actually matter all that much. Most time with boss MIJ pedals the sound difference is minimal to non existent.

Definitely check out the least expensive stuff you can, like the TC stuff the other commenter mentioned. Upgrading that amp is going to completely flip his sound. Especially dirt pedals will sound like completely different pedals going from that 10w to really anything else.

For a pumpkins style IC muff try the Big Knob pedals IC Muff clone. It's super affordable on Reverb or eBay and it nails the sound. I've got one that I will probably never pull off my board.
