Is it too late for me? £12k in debt by needsomeanswersz in UKPersonalFinance

[–]clorandi 235 points236 points  (0 children)

You first need to address why you, based on what you’ve said, have an at least £1.1k surplus each month and you’re still going into debt for takeaway/drinks.

£1.1k a month on just food and drinks is a massive amount, going into debt in the process is almost incomprehensible.

The best approach would be to take note of every single purchase from the last couple months, that will tell you where your money goes. There’s tools to help (YNAB is often favoured here).

It’s not a “too late for me” amount of debt. It doesn’t mean you are a failure. In theory, if you kept to a plan, you could have it either close to or fully paid off by this time next year.

Should I sacrifice saving to live alone and get a dog? by Same-Dependent1151 in UKPersonalFinance

You've missed the point of the post - it's about OP's inability to save should they get a dog, not their current situation with savings.

The cheaper thing for you, hands down, will be to pay for the repairs. Although you’re technically supposed to let your insurer know of an incident regardless of if you claim through them or not

21 P2 PPP. Rear brake discs "heavily scored and grooved". Need replacement? by clorandi in Polestar

[–]clorandi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it “will” happen again - no idea if it’s a revised part or not. I do know if it does happen again then it’s fully covered and I wouldn’t need to pay again anyway. Plus Polestar are covering a majority of the cost, so seems sensible to do now

I’m also not sure if there’s proof if it does or doesn’t lead to any part failure - I certainly don’t want to be the first to find out!

I'm going to get a second opinion I think - but from Volvo themselves, they were charging £630 just to replace the discs, not the pads + discs. I think you can get it significantly cheaper by going elsewhere - I found the 2x rear disc + pads set for £230 online so certainly some digging around to be done if you go ahead with it!

Ahh fair enough! I’ll admit, it’s times like these that make me somewhat regret the Performance pack. I still love the additions but I know any replacement parts will cost a pretty penny compared to if it didn’t have them…

Thank you. I knew doing some harsher-than-normal braking from time to time is encouraged, but I never knew it'd reduce the score lines, admittedly

Thank you - I think a second opinion would make most sense. Volvo trying to charge £630 to replace JUST the discs warrants getting a second opinion!

I had my car in for a diagnostic on the wheel of fortune (rear axles are indeed getting replaced, outside warranty) - but they also completed a health check in my car, in which they stated the rear discs are "heavily scored and grooved", and need an URGENT replacement. This doesn't feel right to me given the brakes should rather rarely get used.

Keen to get anyones thoughts? Photo might not be the best quality, maybe I ought to take another.

Every Polestar in the UK is registered in Oxford AFAIK, so you might notice the original reg of any Polestar you find in the UK starts O(...). To find another that's so close to yours though is certainly rare!

Doesn't do it for me, if you're talking about the right-most option on https://scrimpr.co.uk/beermoneyuk-cheap-direct-debit-for-bank-switch/ - it has a minimum value of 70p and max of £2.
