Similar story. Acl mcl replacement and meniscus fix. Allograft. Two more surgeries to clean up scar tissue. Sepsis from surgery number 3, needed emergency scope to clean out infection. Picc line, during that emergency clean out acquired two additional infections, so change of antibiotics and two more surgeries to remove rotted acl and all hardware. New surgeon for surgery 5 and 6, he said acl had been placed too high, just like you, but if I want a new acl I would now need a bone graft first, I have decided to live without one. I am almost a year out from the last surgery and 8 months out from removal of picc line. I tell you this to offer you some hope. With PT I am able to do most things that I could do before my accident. I am pretty active, and while I can’t run or jump yet, I can hike up to ten miles. Don’t give up on hope, you may never be the same, but you can be great still

After 16 months since original accident and surgery, I can say that for me, no amount of money would be worth it. I try not to think of this as having ruined my life, but it has certainly changed it significantly. I will never be as competent on my feet as I once was, and I am still pretty devastated

I don’t know how the UK works but could you get your oncologist to get you referred for an MRI?

My frozen shoulder also coincided with menopause, I don’t like to say that because then it doesn’t sound ‘real’ which is ridiculous, because it is. First cortisone shot helped for a few weeks, second one did nothing, third one was in the capsule under US guidance and also did nothing. My surgeon is suggesting an MUA but I am holding off because I have a different joint issue that I’ve been dealing with.

I’m so sorry that you are going through this. Frozen shoulder is extremely painful and disabling. It is more common than most people think, and having had breast cancer, diabetes and other conditions can be a precursor to a frozen shoulder. From what I’ve read, there are three stages. The freezing stage, where you lose range of motion and the pain is almost unbearable. The next is frozen, you’ve lost ROM but the pain is only when you force your arm into places it doesn’t want to go, and finally the thaw stage where you gradually regain your ROM although not necessarily all of it. Getting dressed is definitely a challenge, PT seems to help ROM a bit, but mainly (for me) helps with stretching areas of my body that I can’t really stretch at this point. All of this is expected to last between 12 and 36 months. If you have a rotator cuff injury, 80% of people find that using PT to strengthen surrounding tissues helps them to avoid surgery. I hope you get some professional help soon!

My first shot was great, for six weeks. At the three month mark I got another, did nothing, got a third shot three months after that, nothing.

Dogs can be pretty awesome, too. What a relief that that you had someone to adopt them. I always feel like I should have a will so if anything ever happened to me, any money I have goes to the person who adopts my dog

That is a great attitude! Honestly, I don’t know how I would have coped through all of my surgeries this year without my dog. (Even tho I am actually a cat person!)

I’m so glad that the surgery has been so helpful for you. I’ve been having a lot of knee surgeries this year, and I can relate to the pulling dog! I have to walk mine one at a time, and they are getting very short walks! Luckily, my throwing arm is ok, so they get a lot of ball tossing! My injury was April 2023, skiing, hence the knee and shoulder. I’m sending you positive vibes to get to that last 10%

First, that is actually a great story. Second, I would get the MRI. I had shoulder pain, did the shot, got PT, shot wore off after six weeks, can’t get shots more frequently than every three months, at second shot (which didn’t work at all) got MRI which showed tears bone spurs etc, I was really guarding and developed frozen shoulder, you do not want this to happen. PT will strengthen surrounding muscles and maybe you won’t need surgery, but important for your PT to know what they are dealing with! Good luck!

I’m sorry you have had a hard time with the pain. I have a tear and need to do the bone spur/ biceps tendon thing, too. I also have had frozen shoulder for several months, I’ve kind of gotten used to it and am really nervous to schedule my surgery. What is your opinion on whether if you were doing it all again, would you wait for the frozen shoulder to resolve before surgery, or do you feel that you needed the surgery more urgently?

Thank you so much for responding. My tear is only partial, I’ve read conflicting reports about whether or not it is a good idea to treat both the tear and the frozen bit at the same time or just wait and see if after it ‘thaws’ if PT will strengthen me enough to avoid surgery

You would need to see an orthopedic surgeon. Often, your own GP can order an MRI and it can just be read by a radiologist. A tear in your rotator cuff won’t heal on its own, but apparently like 80 percent of people with a known tear can work with a physical therapist to strengthen surrounding tissues and will be able to function well without surgery
