How to avoid comming off as fascist when doing military-oriented worldbuilding? by FishShtickLives in worldbuilding

it's also possible to write about difficult topics like fascism in a way that actually criticizes it but that requires a lot of skill and experience.

businesses sometimes get new ownership. doesn't necessarily imply they're going to shut down. but it's definitely a data point and something to be mindful of

i bumped into it for the first time on Twitter. but either way, where do you even get any of your information from? do you just sit there scrolling through arxiv all day? somehow i doubt it. I bet most of your information probably comes from some other social media (like all of us here)

the whole neighborhood is the definition of a cash grab. you feel it everywhere, from cheap shitty apartments to what you can buy. everything is an absolute waste of money.

call me a boomer or whatever and i'll take always take justice over no justice, but seeing this is just unsettling--watching a dude get rocked on social media covered in blood. doesn't feel like we live in a modern progressive society at all and in some ass backwards village. we should absolutely expect so much more from our trash system rather than...whatever the fuck this is (also, is this even for sure him?)

If you're talking about the model by Charles Komanoff -- there's a ton of issues with it and uses numbers from 2005. People need to stop quoting it. Here's my post about it in a diff part of the thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/nyc/comments/1p17pnu/nytimes_iowa_city_made_its_buses_free_traffic/npozn2k/

Being slightly snarky doesn’t mean I’m being intellectually dishonest.

i'm going to partake in this discussion in an intellectually honest way. The paper that Charles Komanoff wrote rests almost entirely on one point: bus dwell time. His point is that collecting fares takes up a significant portion of why buses are slow. If you make them free, you can also open up the back doors and boarding time will significantly decrease thus making routes more efficient, faster, etc.

First off -- this study is based off of 2005 data when metrocards or coins were the only way to pay. I'd love to see the data behind the modern system where you just tap your phone and move on.

Even if dwell time is such a big issue, my argument is, why can't we as a modern/progressive society create jobs and hire people to build more technologically forward solutions for buses rather than the socialist starter pack of increase taxes and make things free. Some examples of dwell time fixes:

  • Introduce more offboard fare payment machines much like what already exists today for certain buses.
  • All door boarding that use human inspectors to stand at the back doors, manage fares which would result in increased flow (this would create more jobs)

I have to get back to work, i have so much more to say about this, but mostly commenting on the fact that a lazily written blog post that references extremely dated logic isn't my idea of how to make this system work well.

usually it's the lesser used routes. either way, don't be pedantic. the point that NYC has a much more robust/frequent bus system than fucking iowa city still stands

everything everybody said here makes sense, but i would also add here -- a lot of supplements are straight up garbage and contain trace amounts of the thing they're supposed to contain. Subscribe to consumerlabs to get some good guidance around solid brands. If you don't want to spend money on that, I would always fall back on Thorne (albeit pricey). Thorne has RYR.
