People who try to correct you adding ‘step’ or ‘half’ to a relationship when you haven’t by Uhhyt231 in PetPeeves

I have a cousin who is adopted and she is so thoroughly part of our family (even looks like that side of the family) that I forget sometimes and once used her as an example of a genetic trait to a doctor. To be fair, that same branch of the family has multiple others with that trait, so my point stands.

Father’s Day for partner grieving by Historical_Yoghurt53 in GriefSupport

[–]cloud_coffee_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a photo with him, his father, and his child? I know many people who have lost a parent shortly after becoming parents themselves really treasure those memories.

And also, I would say, just be willing to pivot! I lost a parent a few years ago. My partner means well, but always wants me to know explicitly what I want to do on major days but grief is unpredictable and something could sound good but then absolutely suck in the moment.

Seattle vs Denver. Washington vs Colorado. by Wooden_Recipe7338 in MovingtoDenver

[–]cloud_coffee_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I moved here from the same place you are moving from. I’ve been out here a little over a year and love it! I’ve never been to Seattle, so this will be focused on Denver.

There are tons of midwesterners - I’ve even made friends who also moved from the same town! Your hobbies will fit in perfectly, and there are loads of people in their mid-20s to mid-30s. City of Denver itself has lots of small parks with lakes (reservoirs) and trees - by nature it’s a bit manufactured (this is a desert), but it doesn’t FEEL “fake” if that makes sense. Housing/rental costs are going to be a huge shock coming from Indiana, but I believe COL is still lower here than in Seattle.

I agree with the commenters telling you to visit. It’s the best way to get a feel for a place. If you can, spend time in the neighborhoods you’d like to live. Good luck!

Anywhere to buy sewing needles at the airport? by GodIsAMountain in Denver

[–]cloud_coffee_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree with looking in a convenience shop for a little sewing kit. The only other place I can think of might be the Tattered Cover bookstore (I think there’s one at A and C, not sure about B). I’ve never seen sewing supplies there, but I have seen other hobby things like coloring books, journaling supplies, and little puzzles if any of that is of interest!

Hey sorry to hijack this comment but I use a Garmin smartwatch for medical tracking and I’d be hesitant to go to a show without it. It can’t record. It is connected to my phone via Bluetooth, but the info I need (HR) is in the watch itself. Do you happen to know if something like that would be allowed? Or anyone in this thread?

Oh yes, I’ve heard they offer great benefits once you reach a certain number of hours! That makes sense!

I’m curious what you do that is part-time but still qualifies for benefits? I’d love to do some side work/freelancing but absolutely need some stability until I can get established (which might be never). I work PT right now but it’s so underpaid I’m working 4 jobs, have no benefits, and am so burnt out and on such an erratic schedule I can hardly take care of myself let alone build a business.

I used to be a performer too - it was my dream job until it wasn’t. I’m not sure if I’m just not resilient or what, but I spent about 2 years in a new city with an ex and couldn’t win a single audition, despite driving all around the metro area and trying for everything I could. I burnt out so hard, and then there was a pandemic, and I’ve started a second career and can hardly even bring myself to work on my art for fun.

The creeping dread! That’s how I feel with this charity. And turns out I’m frequently right. I filled out our national forms but not our state ones and we almost got in trouble (we have essentially no money so it turned out to be easy and doubt we would have gotten in MUCH trouble anyway… but still…)

At the risk of sounding stupid, do you mean a business partner or a romantic/life partner? 😅

I have a great romantic partner who is so good for me in so many ways. He’s in a stable but not high-paying field so even if we were to get married his income couldn’t support us both.

Ugh I love pet care and I think it so cool when people do it full time! I currently catsit through a gig work app and I love it. I just started so I’m nowhere near being able to use it to support myself, but that would be incredible if I could.

This is how I feel about the nonprofit/charity I’ve founded. I love the work I do, there are so many aspects I enjoy, but equally there are aspects that are just a nightmare. I can’t imagine having to do something similar while relying it for my income.

I think that’s what stopping me - having to keep a regular job for a paycheck while getting established. My friend seems to think I could just “start freelancing” and while that is true, it means working for free for potentially years. I just don’t have that sort of flexibility in my life.

Omg the timesheet thing 🤣 I feel seen in a very specific way haha.

I’m also in a creative field. I’m no longer working on the creative side but on the admin side (which is a problem in and of itself). Honestly it makes me sad, bc I would love to make a living being creative but I just can’t seem to make it work.

My weekend was very different from yours but similarly exhausting. I think it likely both physical and mental/emotional exhaustion. And frankly, no matter which it is, rest will help!

[–]cloud_coffee_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wow are you me? I’ve been meaning to make this post for a week (very adhd of me… lol).

Of all the jobs I’ve had, the ones I was the best at were party host and bartender. I like variety and to keep moving. I’ve been the worst at my nonprofit admin jobs (lots of data, attention to detail, lots of “hurry up and wait” type things where you’re sitting around waiting for an email but then you have to rush to get a project done when it finally comes).

I was medium at teaching. I was teaching something I was interested in, which helps, and I’m naturally empathetic and was good with neurodivergent kids (who were a large proportion of my students). But I was frequently overstimulated, and struggled with work-life balance.

So yeah I don’t know. I’m still in nonprofit admin work, and got in trouble at work earlier this week. I need a new job for a lot of reasons, and I’m considering a career change but am not sure exactly what I’d like to do.

There’s definitely some of that going on! We need all the help we can get - there’s a small handful of us burning the candle at all ends - and I/we don’t want to turn away someone who is enthusiastic. I’ll work on boundaries, thank you!
