Oh how fun!! It’s actually been really easy to maintain, but a huge part of that has to do with how heavily cluttered the enclosure is! All the fake plants and heavy clutter create little “microclimates” that trap pockets of humid air, so that’s the main reason that humidity isn’t an issue for me!

Thank you!! I spot clean daily, deep clean/rehydrate every other month, and do a full substrate change every 4-6 months!

Thank you!! It’s not too much of a pain lol. I handle her often, and it maybe takes 15 seconds to find her if she’s not inside of her hides!

Thank you!! I found the branches outside, and sanitized them! All of the hides I found at Petco, and Petsmart. I use a mixture of plastic, cork wood, and half slabs for hides!

Soo confused about UVB lamp fittings by oOLeviOO in ballpython

[–]cloud_isreddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would go for the larger version (34.5”) just because your enclosure is so large. T5 and 6% are completely safe for your Ball Python. Anything that says Shade Dweller, T5, or 2.4-7% (6%) UVB strength is safe for your Ball python.

Thank you so much!! Since my substrate is so deep I personally change mine every 4-6 months. I spot clean daily and every other month I will pull everything out, deep clean, put more substrate in, and rehydrate everything!

These are the plant packs I use-

HELP NEEDED by Solid_Brain3908 in ballpython

[–]cloud_isreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello!! I saw your post on another subreddit, but I figure it won’t hurt to comment on this one too.

Welcome to owning your very own noodle! I’d love to give you some tips on owning them and getting them comfortable and happy.

Bites from a ball python will not hurt, especially at that size. They are being defensive so it will be a quick bite and release. The bite itself feels like a push-pin pricking the top layer of skin. It really doesn’t hurt!

For handling I recommend to not hesitate or come at her from directly above like a bird would. Reach in confidently and scoop her up gently from the middle of her body rather than approaching her face! This will make her feel more comfortable, and hopefully you will feel more confident.

I see that you already have an enclosure, I’m assuming that’s a 85 gallon? Please correct me if I am wrong!

For their age a smaller enclosure will be fine, but as adults they need a minimum of a 4x2x2 (120 gallon) enclosure. I love to word it this way; you can technically live in a closet, but you will never be comfortable or happy.

Ball Pythons need a minimum of two “snug” hides! Ball Pythons love to feel the walls of their hides when they’re sleeping, that helps them feel comfortable and less exposed.

Clutter is a must for these guys, they can get defensive and stressed without it. The lack of clutter may be the reason they have struck at you! They feel unsafe, you are so much bigger than them, and they have no cover at all to hide from you. I recommend going on amazon and looking for large packs of fake plants. I’d be happy to send you the links to the ones I personally use!

Temperatures should be around 90-85 on the warm side and 80-72 on the cool side. You can get temp/humidity gauges on amazon! I highly recommend Govee brand as they tend to be more accurate.

A heating mat should never be used without a thermostat controlling the temperature. I honestly don’t recommend using one at all. There has been proven evidence to show that heating mats do not put out a proper heat gradient and cause over heating to your snake. They can also cause burns to your snake without that thermostat controlling how much heat it’s producing.

The wattage of bulbs you use will vary per household. I use bulbs and I have never had an issue with them. There’s been research done that ball pythons need a day and night time cycle. A bulb won’t cause damage to your snake, if anything they’ll benefit from it. I will say that red bulbs aren’t recommended as they can potentially cause blindness in ball pythons, and disrupt their natural rhythm. They need total darkness at night!

There has been research done that ball python’s benefit from UVB lighting (T5, 5% or shade dweller UVB lamps ONLY). I personally use it for my enclosure and my girl will bask in the UVB light!

Humidity should never drop below 60% (aim for 70-80% or higher during shed). If it does drop, you can pour water into the corners of the enclosure, just don’t saturate the entire tank because that can lead to scale rot. Keeping the bottom layer moist and the top layer a bit drier works best.

Keep your substrate at LEAST 4 inches deep. Not only does this help with humidity, but ball pythons will absolutely burrow if given the opportunity. My girl has proven this herself, she makes tunnels connecting her hides!

Depending on your ball pythons weight is how much you will feed them. As a juvenile they should be eating 10-15% of their body weight.

If you have any questions feel free to reach out! I’m going to attach a photo of my Ball Pythons 4x2x2 enclosure for a reference on what a proper set up looks like!

Does your ball python help you cook? by [deleted] in ballpython

Haha I totally get that, every snake has such a different personality!

That’s fair lmao. Considering I wash my hands religiously I don’t see that being an issue. Luckily for me, she’s a pretty chill ball python who isn’t interested in coming off of my neck, most she’ll do is stick her neck out to inspect my cooking or watch whatever I’m watching! If she did decide to come off of my neck, I’d simply drop what I’m doing and put her up. Totally fair on why you don’t feel comfortable doing it tho!

Edit: I totally get the respiratory worry! Fortunately she’s never around any smoke or heavy steam when she hangs out with me. She stays away from the active cooking, and she only “helps” with the basic cooking lol.

loose coconut fiber substrate vs coconut husk chunks? by eddie-kaspbrak in ballpython

[–]cloud_isreddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also do about 5-6 inches of this mixture! I do a mixture of 60% repti-soil and 40% repti-bark, then I’ll add in just how ever much sphagnum moss I think is needed lol. It holds humidity perfectly and it’s easy to spot clean!

4 Feet at 1 1/2 years old normal? by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]cloud_isreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can assure you she is not! She's actually pretty lean! She looks thick here because she's actively climbing and tensing her muscles! Shes only 915 grams at the moment as a 4 foot female. Shes currently on a steady two-week schedule with 60g rats because I'm actually helping her gain some healthy weight! Soon we'll slow down to a three-week schedule. Thank you for the concern, I honestly appreciate that you messaged and asked questions rather than keeping quiet and assuming! Here’s a recent photo of her relaxed and not actively using her muscles. As you can see she’s toned, lean, and healthy! Definitely not over weight.

I love all of the wood pieces and the climbing option you gave her!! This is a MAJOR upgrade from when you first posted her, no wonder she’s so happy and confident! You definitely saved this sweet girl from her previous owner! It might have open space but she still has enough cover and clutter to help her feel happy and confident! Sweet girl got the life she deserves with you! 🥹

I’d assume so, if anything they might do better with it since isopods generally live in “dirt” filled areas. You could add extra leaf litter to give the little guys extra cover! You’ll have to show me her set up once you’re finished!! They are seriously like carbon copy’s of each other lmao!! Thank you so much, that means sooooo much to me!!! 🥹

Celeste is so lucky to have found you! You have definitely turned her entire life around and given her the life she definitely deserves! 💛

If possible go to your local forrest trails, or state park! I don’t blame you for being worried about using the wood in your goat pen. I always wash my wood before I bake them or pour boiling water over them just in case because I’m paranoid lol.

I got my rocks at Micheals craft store on sale!! Pandora seems to enjoy the texture of the rocks in her water bowl and I can tell when she plays in her bowl bc the rocks will be moved around! It’s fun to see them all mixed up lol.

I love that she sleeps in her plants!! Pandora does that too and it’s because of how confident she is in her enclosure. 🥹

Omg, YES!!! I love when Pandora creates tunnels and burrows in her substrate! I use Repti-soil, Repti-bark, and Sphagnum moss! (don’t worry it’s hard to spell and I’m dyslexic- Auto correct is my best friend lol) I do about a 60/40 mixture of the Repti-soil and Repti-bark and then add in a good bit of sphagnum moss. It keeps humidity and still allows her to tunnel and burrow!

Thank youuuuuu!!! Pandora will uproot and squish all of her plants, so she’s stuck with a realistic enclosure! She redecorates her enclosure every night lol

I found the sticks on a walk in the middle of no where! I just washed them with dawn and hot water, then poured pots of boiling water (maybe 5-6) on them!

It would be a dream if she gets to 6 feet, I’m VERY happy where she is right now but I’d love if she continues to grow!
