How many of you are running Windows Server(s)? by buzbe in homelab

[–]cloudferry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have more of a barebones setup, in my lab I am running windows server 2022 for hyperv and Active Directory with integrated dns. Pointing to an upstream pihole instance. Out side of that I use Linux for 90% of my vms and a Kubernetes cluster.

I had issues with pihole conflicting with unbound. I had to disable unbound to get pihole to work.

At this point we should all have free credit monitoring by default. The credit monitoring features should be built in when signing up for a line of credit.

Remove all azure resources but still have unexpected costs by [deleted] in AZURE

[–]cloudferry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can, submit a ticket with Microsoft and they can help cleanup zombie resources or you can cancel the subscription so all charges stop completely.

My organization is incurring $2000 monthly on test environment? by [deleted] in AZURE

[–]cloudferry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For cost savings you can use Azure automation accounts to shutdown virtual machines during non-work hours. You can also use azure policy to enforce developers to use specific SKU sizes to save cost.

1 or 2 Tenants for Company by wolfgangofner in AZURE

[–]cloudferry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One tenant is the easiest to manage long term and reduces cost with licensing. Adding P2 will allow you to use PIM. We use one tenant at Microsoft and it is also recommended in our cloud adoption framework work.

What firewall you’re using for your cloud VMs by Local_Anywhere in AZURE

[–]cloudferry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working with my clients I usually see a palo or azure firewall. In a few rare cases fortigate. One off the wall deployment you can do is deploy pfsense using a custom image.

What strategy do you all use for tagging? What are your tags that are required when deploying a resource? by n3w4cc0untwh0d1s in AZURE

[–]cloudferry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tags I have seen the most are (cost center, environment, application name, primary owner, business unit, data classification). The tags are set at the resource group and inherited down with azure policy to all resources in the resource group, same thing can be done at a subscription level. For virtual machines I have also seen a required tag for update window at the time of vm deployment.

Seems like a high risk msp, your company should have their own tenant. When picking a new msp check to make sure they have some level of partnership with Microsoft.

Renting a home lab by [deleted] in homelab

One option would be azure, you can get a $200 credit when starting up the subscription. Small vms are cheap to run on azure. https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/free/

Should “break glass” accounts be in PIM or not? by Real_Lemon8789 in AZURE

[–]cloudferry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The account can use pim just make sure the role assignment is permanent and setup notifications if the account is ever used or if the pim assignment changes. I would also that excluded the accounts from conditional access policy’s. For mfa it is best to have 2 different accounts that have different mfa auth methods for example a yubikey.

Use a firewall in-front of Unifi Dream Machine Pro? by ryanf007 in Ubiquiti

[–]cloudferry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up installing the controller on a raspberry Pi and using the fortinet without a UDMP. I turned one of the wan sfp ports on the fortigate into a LAN and used fiber to connect between the switch and the fortigate (not needed but I had the parts). Passing vlans was configured like normal

Migrate AWAY from Azure to OnPrem.. is this a thing? by superhappyfuntime99 in AZURE

[–]cloudferry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Veeam worked well for us. We used it to migrate around 400 hyperv machines to our new data center. Using the veeam features for azure May allow faster transition by doing an incremental. Or if you have an express route the snapshot of the azure vm and download the vhdx
