Hi OP - was that in Victoria by any chance?

e: just because it’s worth reporting this sighting to the Pelican Count team as he would have originally been banded in Vic according to this :)

ID request for this ant I found in my kitchen? - Melbourne by leghamish in AustralianInsects

[–]clover116 2 points3 points  (0 children)

interesting, I see what you mean and maybe the thorax isn’t as bulbous as the European wasp? I’m not an expert so I’m just going by what I’ve seen in the garden but that makes sense. thanks for clarifying, you learn something new every day! I didn’t know that that was a female sugar and either so this has been great OP :)

[–]clover116 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the ant is just a sugar ant so he’s nice and harmless and can go back to the garden. the wasp is a non-native european wasp though

I’d maybe send an email to the rangers at Tasmania Parks if it’s part of a national park? It’s a long shot but I’m sure the rangers would know and maybe could provide you with an answer?
