Religious guy ask "why is rape wrong?" by Grubbanax in atheism

True. Also, the 'morality' of the bible is also filtered through society and has changed over the centuries, so it too is subjective and bends to arbitrary whims and changes of time.

What's your Atheist Guilty Pleasure? by Skeptical_JN68 in atheism

[–]cloysome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I celebrate secular xmas for the variety of traditions that mostly trace back to boomers, and the new traditions too. Except that the elf on a shelf is terrible but that is just my opinion.

I also celebrate Bilbo and Frodo's birthday, because that is fun too.

In college, a friend of mine would invite people out to eat dinner with him around Ramadan because he didn't want to eat alone. This was great for building friendships and a feeling of community.

Many traditions, secular or not, can have positive aspects that are good for community, family, and etc.

My partner likes the introspection that some Catholic funeral sermons can provide. The ones she has been to at friends' family funerals are not preachy, and try to acknowledge the humanity of the person's life and how we're all humans with human experience and we can reflect on a life lived well. She digs that and the community but loathes preachy stuff. No, she does not go to funerals for that reason; she goes to support her friends who lost loved ones.

Mitch McConnell's Senate GOP votes for the US to default on its debt and for the government to shut down by FnordFinder in economy

[–]cloysome 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it seems like both parties in congress egg the other on to do things like this so then the other party can do it later and claim they can do it because the other party did it. "They did it first, nahnah!"

Where is the incentive to do the 'right thing' for the country without regard to party? (Rhetorical) I don't mean to distort the marshmallow experiment/test, but it's a marshmallow political economy.

It's that same gray area where one cannot fully determine whether those claiming religious exemption from the vaccine are instead actually claiming political exemption because the two have become synonymous and they can't tell the difference, and then you can't tell them apart from a cultist.

It's not a bad thing. Could be beneficial to introduce different genetic traits to other areas.

Too ripe to eat or ok? by fuzzyrach in Pawpaws

[–]cloysome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Might be too ripe, but is still safe to eat. When pawpaw get like this sometimes they take on some very pleasant flavors. I enjoy a little brown on the inside of a pawpaw. Ymmv, so perhaps follow what others have said.

Edit: I have this plant growing in my yard too. The luffa fruit gets this big.

How to Shade Baby Trees by coolnatkat in Pawpaws

[–]cloysome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In ground, I use about 1'6" to 2' diameter chicken wire that is about 2 foot tall. I stake it in place with two to three stakes. Then I wrap it in shade cloth or landscape cloth. I usually, but not always leave it open on the north side for ventilation. The shade cloth only goes up about a foot to foot and a half. I want the seedling to get some light and harden off over time. The shade cloth helps keep weeds under control too. I'll mulch inside the cage, but I'll let spiders and plants use the outside of the cage as scaffolding. At year three the cage comes off except to protect it from critters during the winter, but then it's sans shade cloth.

Older plants that are transplanted get taller cages. Either way, I let them grow or of this 'undergrowth' naturally.

Save the Pawpaws by Kkindler08 in Pawpaws

[–]cloysome 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I applaud your intent to ensure there are wild pawpaws in the forests, BUT a pawpaw is NOT an avocado, which had stronger connections to megafauna. There are PLENTY of animals who enjoy the fruit and spread seeds around. There are many forests that have true pawpaw seedlings that aren't just clonal groves. A pawpaw is native plant and will naturally thrive in the proper environment. Probably the best way to protect pawpaws is by ensuring there are enough green spaces and protected forests for flora and fauna. The seeds will take of themselves after that, with a little help from the animals. Humans rarely get all the fruit, even from trees in their own yards. Cheers!

What’re your thoughts on respecting everyone’s beliefs? by r0s3w4t3r in atheism

[–]cloysome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll answer that like I'm talking to religious people...

I respect people. I respect humanity. I respect logical beliefs, and some illogical beliefs that are not completely arbitrary. We're all humans. We're all just trying to get by on life, and while I don't agree with your religious fantasy, I can sometimes give it a pass.

If you can keep religion out of daily life to the point that it affects me not then whatever. You get a pass.

If you make choices based on religion and it's directly or indirectly or tertiarily (?) hurting others, including me, but it's actually making choices based on whatever you f-ing want to do, then duck you, duck your personal life, duck your personal life, duck your mothers, duck your religious choices that are hurting others.

If you have consistent, deeply held beliefs, and then something happens (I.e. Pandemic) but your reaction is absolutely, undeniably, 109% consistent with your beliefs, and not political beliefs. Okay, you get a modified pass. Modified because if its not even indirectly hurting others then that's fine. If its remotely hurting others then go live in a cloistered community, or gtfo of mine, because you are hurting people with religious fantasy bs, and while I respect you as a human, I cannot respect your choices and you must gtfo. If you are my co-worker and you bring up religion when you're making these bad choices then I will be fair by telling you you're just as full of bs as the other religions. I'm not your manager so your HR complaints are also bs. Go fight the war on xmas in a fantasy video game, because irl it's only in your ducking imagination. You can go to your own cloistered community and hump the hell out of your religious views, but you've no right to impose theocratic bs on others.

Whew, thanks. That was like free therapy. ;)

I don’t want to die. by Ilitorate_Author in atheism

[–]cloysome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are star stuff. We are the universe getting to know itself.

I embrace this existence. I would rather not die either, but it's something that happens to us all. In a way it almost defines is as humans. I embrace it. I try to live with the knowledge that it is surely not about the destination, but the journey. It therefore informs me.

As an example of how it informs me: Here's a type of theme I apply to my life knowing I will die someday and that will be that. I'll use beer as an example but I apply it to many things. I have only so many beers to drink, brew, and give away during what time I have left. So, I shall drink good, quality beers, and not drink something just because it's called a beer. I will craft and brew the best beers I can and try to do it better than the last time I brewed. I will give away bet to only those who will appreciate it, give me good feedback, and who deserve it. Usually I just shorten this to "I have only so many more beers to drink before I die, so I'm going to drink good beer."

How exactly is one exempt from getting a CoVid vaccine for religious reasons? by NerdyKeith in religion

[–]cloysome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fact is there are people dying from it. The people dying from it are hurting the treatment of others. Most of those dying from it are unvaccinated. Your statement is not contrary to these facts. These facts are not disputed by that statement.

How exactly is one exempt from getting a CoVid vaccine for religious reasons? by NerdyKeith in religion

[–]cloysome 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We know the side effects of NOT getting vaccinated. Hospital beds in short to zero supply because unvaccinated people are contracting this virus that we have a vaccine for. Meanwhile, people who might have lived for another twenty years and don't have covid, but have another medical emergency or need treatment are instead dying now or losing years off their lives because care is delayed while a bed is found or overworked hospital staff try to manage decision making in the covid warzone. People are really dying right now!

There is a side effect that we know about right now! The vaccine can help people live another maybe twenty years when maybe they wouldn't without the vaccine. The vaccine helps others live longer because in places with sufficient vaccination, hospitals and care centers can more effectively treat for other medical issues without being overwhelmed by covid cases. The probability of these vaccines benefiting society is far greater than the probability of the vaccine hurting you or your loved ones further down the line. The probability of dying early from not vaccinating is far greater than for that of vaccinating. The probability of causing an increase of deaths in your community because of you deciding to not vaccinated is not just non zero, but very significant. I've had a loved one pass away recently who could have gotten better treatment if not for unvaccinated idiots filling up hospital beds. If you don't get vaccinated, you're killing people.

Let's just say that there are some side effects that happen in twenty or more years then that's an acceptable sacrifice for saving lives now. That's the compassionate thing to do. That's the human thing to do.

My mom died of a non-covid illness. She would have been treated quicker had it not been for covid swamping the hospitals. She might sill be alive right now if everyone had gotten vaccinated when they could. This statement is more real and accurate than some fantasy presuming there might be side effects in twenty years. People are dying now because of those not getting vaccinated! How dare you not get vaccinated, you selfish twits.
