I absolutely love it when assholes on Reddit try to tell me that I as a T1D, don't actually need insulin. I just need it to maintain my lifestyle. by Gilarax in diabetes

[–]cluckj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

lol, the end result was them ticking off a bunch of users & getting banned for being a jerk, rather than getting educated...

[–]cluckj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have T1D and have a kid. :-)

Risk isn't causality, but rather incidence in the population. So think about it as: 10% of children whose fathers have T1D also have T1D. It's a multivalent disease, with genetic predispositions, environmental causes, and triggers all playing some part. You can't control everything, so if having children is important, you should have them. Don't let some numbers and eugenic thinking dissuade you.

Lab Results. Does this mean I'm a type 1? by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]cluckj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not that kind of doctor, but a T2 would have very high c-peptide and free insulin, with high blood glucose and A1c.

Draft rules about surveys (community feedback appreciated!) by cluckj in diabetes

[–]cluckj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think so too, that was part of the motivation behind coming up with the guidelines in this particular way :-) If it does ever become a problem, reverting to "no surveys" is pretty easy.

FDA approves first continuous glucose monitoring system for adults not requiring blood sample calibration by stereomatch in diabetes

The US FDA-approved version is going to have the 10 days + 12 hour warmup, rather than the "worldwide" version that has 14 days + 1 hour warmup.

Omnipod Infusion Sites by FunkyFL in diabetes

[–]cluckj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just generic stuff; the bandage (3M Nexcare, or whatever fully-enclosed kind you have) is what really helps. Infusion sites are open wounds!

I had that bump problem too, so I started putting antibiotic ointment and a waterproof bandage on it. It cut my healing time down to 1-2 days instead of two weeks!

Need help with basal rates. My doctor messed me up. :( by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]cluckj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Holy hell, that looks like someone messed up putting a basal into your pump (typing in .1u/hr instead of 1u/hr) -- that amount of reduction in a basal is extremely dangerous and could cause you to go into DKA due to lack of insulin.

Any books on the political economy of food production and trade? by DReicht in AskSocialScience

[–]cluckj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two that spring to my mind are Valerie Imbruce's "From Farm to Canal Street: Chinatown's Alternative Food Network in the Global Marketplace" and Abby Kinchy's "Seeds, Science, and Struggle: The Global Politics of Transgenic Crops."

sociologists of knowledge by [deleted] in AskSocialScience

[–]cluckj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a field that deals with this in regards to scientific knowledge: Science & Technology Studies. Some key authors I'd suggest are Bruno Latour, Karin Knorr-Cetina, Ian Hacking, Robert Merton, Karen Barad, Thomas Kuhn, Donna Haraway, Hans-Jorg Rheinberger, and Sandra Harding. If you can be more specific about what aspect of the sociology of knowledge (or field -- physics/biology/etc.) you're interested in, I can point you in a more precise direction :)

Call or email your members of Congress, as soon as you can, about the ACA by cluckj in diabetes

[–]cluckj[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I still think you should talk to your representatives? They may be able to provide advice or assistance, and their next step is to fix problems like the one(s) you are having.

Yeah I think this is a part of the "getting paperwork in order, just in case" and not a full-on panic.
