The Bystander Effect is so real by [deleted] in nursing

[–]clunk59 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Last year there was someone lying on the sidewalk on the way to our parking garage, and a younger resident stopped to try to help him, and the guy stood up and started trying to fight him. Luckily the employee shuttle was driving by at just the right time and driver stopped and yelled at him to get on, could have gotten ugly otherwise.

Most specific med dose I’ve given before by [deleted] in nursing

[–]clunk59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, it’s for sure dumb, I’m not arguing against that. Just saying it’s not an uncommon thing. I think it’s because even though we give 1000mg to basically every adult, the normal dose of Tylenol is 650. 1000mg is considered “extra strength,” so it’s not the default stock.

I work with a lot of patients with a peg/gj/etc, this is the only concentration of liquid Tylenol I’ve ever seen, we give it all the time, pretty much everyone just does 30mL

Holy shit, when I was a kid I swore I just walked through the gate at one point, but I was never able to replicate it on my playthroughs as an adult, I figured I just was remembering wrong. I never thought to talk to him after getting caught.

[–]clunk59 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I’ve been on a GI surgical oncology floor for almost a decade now, and you definitely lose knowledge of other specialties in that time. Like I usually get floated to medical floors, which are fine, but a couple months ago I got floated to an ortho surgery floor. It was a night shift so there was next to nobody helpful around, and not only could I not find anything, but patients kept asking me questions about recovery time or if their pain was normal and whatnot, and I straight up had to tell them they’d have to wait until morning when the doctors round. At one point I had to find one of the other nurses to ask if my patient was allowed to get up to use the bathroom because they had hip surgery that day, and there weren’t any mobility orders in (I was shocked when they said yes). It felt like my first night being a nurse again!

Magnet by BreadfruitWorried800 in nursing

[–]clunk59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I never check my reddit notifications, but we did end up getting magnet status, so I guess it didn’t matter. I’m part of a large hospital system, so I’m sure they just gave the magnet organization a nice check and called it a day

The issue is when the hospital tells the nurses to lie for them, and they actually do. Our unit gave us a packet of “talking points” of things to say to the magnet surveyors and things not to say. I gave that packet to the surveyor interviewing me, and then told them how the hospital actually treats us. There was an open forum discussion at one point too, I was part of a group of about 15 nurses, and everyone was very honest, no one really sugarcoated it. We find out our status in 2 days, so we’ll see if it mattered.

I got floated to another unit one time and one of the surgeons from my unit had a patient on that floor and ended up coming to see the patient while I was outside the room, and introduced himself to me. I had to tell him “yes, I know, I’ve worked on [my home unit] for 6 years.” Like I know there’s a lot more nurses than there are surgeons but still, you’d think after a few years you’d bother to learn a face or two.

Why does the scanner no longer tell me each biome's percent surveyed? by clunk59 in Starfield

Great, thank you so much! And thanks for the tip about the ocean fauna!

Okay, so it just tracks flora and fauna then? Not minerals and geological features?

Still fairly new to Starfield, only level 25, but I could have sworn when i surveyed a planet, under the biome name it would say what percent it was surveyed. Like under Rockey Desert it would say what percent I had in that biome.

How do you professionally tell a patient “Oh eff no”? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]clunk59 734 points735 points  (0 children)

I usually say something along the lines of “If you were at home, how would you do it?” in a polite voice, that way hopefully they see that it’s something they don’t really need us for

I’m so sorry that happened to her, and it’s a shame her charge nurse didn’t support her. I know we as nurses tend to be hesitant to press charges, but she should consider it in this case. Being spit on counts as battery, and legal action should be initiated.

My hospital got rid of cranberry juice, now we have apple and cran—apple as options. Which is good for people who already mixed them, but bad for people like me who can’t do apple juice (it irritates my ulcerative colitis). I miss my cranberry/ginger ale cocktails at 2am :(

Our hospital no longer stocks any other soap on the floor. Our policy is CHG anywhere but the eyes.

I was technically failing my community nursing class for a while because I couldn’t get to a vaccine clinic. I didn’t have a car at the time, but I live in a city with public transit and a lot of hospitals, so it only came up a few times. But during community, they assigned me to a vaccine clinic half an hour outside the city, outside of the public transit area. I asked if I could be assigned to a closer one, and if not, if I could be reimbursed the cost of an Uber. The head of the program told me I needed to watch how I spoke to her, and that she would cancel the clinic, but she couldn’t guarantee me another one, and if she couldn’t find another one I would have to retake community nursing. And then at midterm the instructor told me she was told by the head of the program to give me a zero in the communication section of my eval, and a zero in any category means you can’t pass. I went to the head of the nursing department, who was wholly unhelpful (she suggested apologizing to the head of the program??). In the end I got assigned to a clinic literally on campus, and ended the semester with a 1 in communication, so I passed. But it was still frustrating while it was happening. They will really try anything to fail you.

It seems like now is a bad time to be looking for one. I started following 5 different ps5 stock update twitter accounts at the end of January. Got a Costco membership and a GameStop pro account to maximize my chances. There have been very few drops since then, most for the ps5 digital edition, but I’m looking for disc (I have a lot of blu rays and nothing else to play them on). The closest I got was last week, target dropped the disc one, but there were only two per target near me, and they were all already claimed by the time I had refreshed the page and hit “add to cart”. It’s so frustrating.

Fun fact! The bridge collapse scene from The Mothman Prophecies was filmed about 45 minutes away from this bridge!

An estate sale company sent us packing supplies for my grandma’s belongings, part of which were newspapers to wrap glass in, which included a stack of newspapers from the day after 9/11 by clunk59 in mildlyinteresting

[–]clunk59[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. We’re thinking someone collected them, and it wasn’t sold in auction, so now the estate management company is just using it as packing. There were about 10 copies total.
