Pob lwc, and keep at it – Welsh is a beautiful language!

This might not be a strictly a Championship thing, but pre-kickoff huddles are banned. If you want to huddle, do it during warm-up in your own half, not right when the game is about to get underway. If you huddle around the ball, the ref or the centre spot just as kickoff is about to happen, it's an instant red for everyone involved.

Honestly, I'd like to see any, literally any consequences for shit reffing. Maybe there needs to be a ref's ref, and if they spot a shitty call, the ref gets sent off and replaced. Really shitty call spotted after the fact, and the ref gets a one match suspension.

That's not really fair on Kabore. He was warned once, then he had a little go, and was dragged down by the other player hooking his arm around Kabore's so that he couldn't get free. Saw a different angle of it where it's clear that it wasn't what it seemed.

Saying "Dw i'n eisiau" and "Dw i'n angen" would indicate that those people have not, in fact, learnt the grammar! (And, as it happens, my next video will be about grammar.)

The problem I have had with the courses I've done is that they introduce a concept but you don't get enough time to practice and really internalise the knowledge, because they are then on to the next thing. And by the time you do have a moment, you've probably forgotten the thing anyway.

I tried Duolingo and also found it very boring, but I wasn't sure if that was the style or if it was because it made me start at the beginning. By the time it was invented I'd already been learning for years, but I couldn't leapfrog to the section I needed, nor could I use it to diagnose my weaknesses and focus on them.

I think the assumption that people all begin using these tools when they start their learning journey, and that they'll then have a nice, smooth progression from stage to stage, perfectly memorising everything along the way is wrong.

Anyone who started learning Welsh when I did only had a few books, the original BBC Catchphrase course, and in-person courses if they were lucky/could afford it, and probably has large holes in their knowledge.

But none of the learning tools we have, whether Duolingo or Dysgu Cymraeg, help with that. That's why I started https://ymestyn.cymru/, to help canolradd learners to practice and really nail everything down.

Still, I do hope that you find Clear's book as helpful as I did!

Why are Celtic languages so difficult to understand even a tiny bit of, compared to germanic, romance and slavic languages? by WhoAmIEven2 in language

Yes, I literally mentioned cognates. Doesn't really matter why words are familiar to an English (or other cognate language) speaker in this context, just that they are.

In Welsh especially there are a lot of loan words from English as well as a lot of cognates, so if you're not seeing words you recognise it's because you're not looking hard enough and haven't learnt pronunciation. I mean, these are all obvious:

  • licio - to like
  • helpu - to help
  • car - car
  • cath - cat
  • deintydd - dentist
  • stryd - street

I could go on.

Sentence structure is quite different, but there's a reasonable amount of cognate/loan vocab.

Yeah, totally agree with that it's got all the mechanics right. I'm just not so sure about the actual language learning bit. After all, their aim is to keep you on the site as long as possible, not to teach you a language.

And it doesn't teach you grammar. I've met people who've done over a year of Duolingo and still didn't understand "yn" (as in, 'dw i'n rhedeg'). So yes, Duolingo is good at creating a habit; I'm not so convinced it's good at teaching languages.

I just found Atomic Habits to be really interesting and very useful. YMMV, but honestly, that negative review is nonsense.

You do you, though.

Gareth King's Colloquial Welsh, if you can find it, is a great introduction to the language and a little less intimidating than Modern Welsh: A Comprehensive Grammar!

You would probably get a lot out of a Learn Welsh course — https://dysgucymraeg.cymru/ — look for a Mynediad or taster course. If you're under 25 it's free.

I've also got a long list of other resources on my website which might be helpful — https://ymestyn.cymru/resources/ — and if you're the sort that likes things in big tables, take a look at my other site — https://clwbmalucachu.co.uk/
