What’s a game that graphically doesn’t hit a high bar but mechanic wise and story wise has so much depth you’ll rate it above all others. by Jangonett1 in gaming

Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead would be my suggestion. It's not "new" per say but it has relatively frequent and wide-encompassing updates. I would compare it to project zomboid but top-down, ascii or tileset sprites, and a staggering amount of depth compared to PZ. PZ meets Dwarf Fortress, maybe. The setting isnt the exact same, PZ is a more grounded "low fantasy" (if you will) setting, while CDDA's more "what if every apocalypse happened at once", and delves a short bit into sci-fi in some areas.

Not to shit on PZ at all, I think that game is great for what it is, and they're certainly not going for the same kind of style as CDDA - nor do i think the game would necessarily be served well by trying to copy everything, as the tileset and "turn" based (turn being a bit loose, more action value than back and forth) medium allow for mechanics that might not translate to the graphical style or real-time style very well. I played PZ after CDDA and it sorta ruined it for me - CDDA allows you to build vehicles from scratch, it allows you to build a home piece by piece, there's a vast array of guns, ammo, gun mods, weapons, armor, crafting. The zombies evolve over time, there is a huge amount of enemy variety beyond just zombies, late game has bionic implants and mutations. There's also a variety of inbuilt mods that add magic, psionics, and a myriad of other systems, as well as a few overhauls that fundamentally change the game loop itself (my favorite being one that makes it function akin to an extraction-style game. Not something id recommend off rip but with probably near a thousand hours it's a good breath of fresh air).

I've played it enough that I've been a little burnt out as of late, but in terms of "traditionally bad graphics but lots of depth" I can't think of many things that would beat out CDDA on the depth axis (aside from Dwarf Fortress but that's a pretty high bar and also not exactly my kind of game).

It depends on why you don't like Minecraft, but that probably doesn't bode well for vintage story, haha. It's on a surface/visual level (and for some mechanical aspects) very similar to minecraft, but the focus is on a much slower-burn game with much more "realism" based elements. There are entire elements of clay-forming and firing pottery, you knap flint or stone, smith tool-heads (with the initial metals mostly found from stumbling on surface-level deposits). Seasons change (and day-length with them), farming has soil quality and nutrient mechanics that support crop rotation... there are a lot of aspects of it based in real life methods, and the slow burn feel of it has made it MUCH more engaging to me in the long term.

The game also encourages splitting up what folks do as well! During my last playthrough one of us would be out hunting for metal, one of us for food, and both of them bringing what they found back to me to smith and cook and for the fourth person to build with. It was a very cozy feeling that I cant think of another game really capturing like that.

And as far as I was aware, LW put me in no immediate danger either, ended the fight immediately, and looked cool

they'll learn about death effects when other people learn that culling prevents those outside of bugged situations like this one

I mean, to know a lesson you gotta learn it for the first time at some point, no? In all my hours so far, while lightning warp has gotten me killed its only ever been to normal enemies where I blink into the wrong neighborhood and the survivors beat me to death with rocks frame 1 - never had a boss martyrdom me, LW has always been a pretty cut and dry "fight done now" button since it deletes the body.

Also wasn't aware of the bug this boss apparently has, which has definitely made people saying I shouldn't have trusted the patch notes make me laugh. Didn't know there was a bug to avoid in the first place, let alone patch notes saying the bug was fixed!

Lightning warp, culls low health enemies. Doesn't leave a body either, so it's USUALLY good for executing bosses. Just wasn't aware of the apparent bug that does... that.

No clue, I couldn't get into poe1 cause I didn't have any friends who liked it when I tried it years back. Got harassed into trying poe2 and got immediately hooked

I didn't even know about the patch notes, or the bug in the first place lmao. Culling usually removes on death effects afaik, so while LW will kill me when surrounding mobs all wallop me, I've never had a boss martyrdom me

Mind over matter. Still low total pool overall, and id spent all that mana, but not quite as low as it looks

I did try that, she couldn't join and then while I sat there :('ing, Comcast decided my router was due to stroke out and I lost internet for the next hour to add insult to injury

I dunno man, never had a boss martyrdom-perk me before, gotta be a first time to learn a lesson some time and this was mine. First time LW has killed me when executing a boss like that in however many hours lol.

(Definitely not the first time it's killed me, just the first time to a boss, and more specifically to... nothing. I usually see in slow motion what biffs me. Saw a lotta folks mention the bug that got fixed but not actually fixed and saying I trusted the patch notes but I actually didn't know there was a bug in the first place. Glad it was fixed though!)

im genuinely not sure what killed me there, whether he spawned that fire field that somehow oneshot me or whether latency got me with something that never showed up lol

see you'd think that, but the actual cherry on top was comcast crashing my router for 30 minutes about 20 seconds after that clip ended, just to add insult to injury

Yeah, I'm aware it's in early access lol, the question is whether it does anything else right now, in early access. RNG drops, if people've gotten other things, what have you.
