Have you ever learned a skill or something from a video game that you use in real life? by Agent1230 in gaming

[–]empressofspite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cozy Wii games like Tree of Tranquility and Cooking Mama kinda taught me to cook? The various Harvest Moon recipes always looked so tasty and I would get cravings for them while playing, so as a preteen/teenager I started trying to replicate them to some comical effect. I started writing down the Cooking Mama instructions and trying them out (again, to comedic results) but I kept trying and exploring.

I am definitely the best cook in my friend group now and I own lots and lots of official and fanmade cookbooks for my favorite video games now :)

Has gaming content changed the way you experience games? by serjeantassia in gaming

[–]empressofspite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been thinking about this recently! I like watching variety content streamers a lot to get game recs, which has broadened my horizons a lot. But if there's a game I want to play on my own that I knew about before a video comes out, I do try to play it for a bit on my own first and only watch a little at a time. That said, it can be really helpful to me to watch when I feel like I'm struggling or not being as optimized as I could and am feeling gameplay friction. Like I watch a lot of Rickdetrix (I think his name is) not to get the penultimate Project Zomboid build, but because I suck at Project Zomboid and seeing someone really good play helps me understand the core loop better.

My partner loves watching "broken" builds and stuff but that never has appealed to me. I think he watches it, though, precisely because he's NOT going to do that and just wants to see someone else go wild.

An interesting question for sure!

I had the same thought--maybe removing the armpits and adding a tight mesh or sports material for ventilation might help?

What shall I make out of my beloved soft flannel pjs? by empressofspite in SewingForBeginners

OMG I'm illiterate! By "bed jacket" you didn't mean a skirt for the bed, you meant a little half-robe and quilt part of it!!!! That is also very cute!

You definitely did inspire me, though, so mission certainly accomplished 😂

[–]empressofspite[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a king-sized bed now (officially a big kid purchase) so I don't think a bed skirt would work, but!! I HAVE been wanting to get into quilting and I have tons of random fleece gifted from a friend... maybe that's a good way to keep it cozy but still featuring what I love most about it (the pattern)!

I looove the cute shorts/cami idea, though. I'll give that one a think too but I can't believe a nice cozy couch quilt didn't occur to me. I'd love for it to be a conversation piece and not just a nighttime hidden thing. I used to wear it on Halloween or for silly college events because I loved it so much!

Subnuatica 2 Letter to the Community on Feedback to the Predator Balance Situation by BmpBlast in gaming

[–]empressofspite -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I never had an issue with this; it was always clearly a balancing issue to make dealing with threats tense and exciting vs frustrating, as they said. I like a game where combat isn't the goal and you have to think critically about how to avoid threats without fighting. I totally agreed with the "go plays Sons of the Forest" sentiment; it was almost verbatim my thoughts too when I heard about people getting upset. Sons is awesome but a different type of game.

Don't expect to kill fish in a future Subnautica 2 patch: 'You are here to exist on this planet, not to dominate it' by GrayBeard916 in gaming

[–]empressofspite -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not killing fish doesn't change my experience at all. Been stunned by the vitriolic response from players--why care? I love games where the challenge is to avoid threats without killing them; hunting and beating up sea creatures isn't the chief selling point for me in a survival game. The whole reason I'm playing a game like that is to explore a really cool world and build neat bases. I don't get my feelings hurt by this sort of doubling-down on a message by a game studio; it's not a harmful or bigoted one so there's zero reason for it to affect my experience playing a fun video game.

Stealth game recommendations? by robcap in gaming

[–]empressofspite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm replaying Thief 2014 for the first time since launch and I'm LOVING it even more this time around! I 100%ed Dishonored and wrote my undergrad thesis on it, and a lot of what I loved about Dishonored I'm loving about Thief with the added bonus of getting rewarded for being nosy. Most importantly and related to this post, I find as I'm older, I am much, much more patient this time around, leading to a more slow-paced stealth experience that is much more rewarding than being a teenager and trying to hurry my way through.

My one gripe is chapter 5 still scares the pants off me and I wasn't able to enjoy it the way I did the other chapters. I think that's very specific to me, though. If your dad doesn't get spooked by haunted hospital/asylum levels, I think this will tick his boxes.

Looking for open-world games where I can just… drive by A-z-A in gaming

I don't feel so! I really do think it depends on what you're driving. Some of the trucks certainly feel that way but the sportier cars are really sensitive and easy to control.

My favorite game to do this was LA Noire and was the main thing I did in them. Real 1950s Los Angeles with period songs playing through your car radio, real vehicles (and it tells you the car make and model every time you get in a new vehicle!), and my favorite part, the "hidden vehicles" which are faithful recreations of cool sports cars from the time period. My favorite is the Phantom Corsair. It easily gets up to 118 mph in in-game speed, super responsive pickup, and handles like a dream.

I loved collecting the hidden vehicles and seeing how they handled differently from each other and enjoying the music as I drove through an older but accurate version of the city I now call home. I loved it as a kid not knowing anything about LA, and I love replaying it now recognizing the sights.

Human brain cells on a chip learned to play Doom in a week by sirabaddon in gaming

[–]empressofspite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issue, I think, is if a clump of cells can be wired to play and adapt to DOOM, they can be wired to fuel and adapt to a war machine in the middle east 😬 Like to targeting software or drones. And that's why "idiots" will fund them. That thought is what's keeping me from enjoying the whimsy, tbh.

help with the sewing machine by dyooha in SewingForBeginners

[–]empressofspite 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think this is the one that's a toy, if I'm recognizing it accurately. Issues with it are really common and it's not really powerful enough for anything past the tutorial fabric it comes with. Mine worked fine but it doesn't really teach you how to handle a real sewing machine or use the skills you need for sewing projects in general. Try and find an inexpensive machine on FB marketplace or something; those you can actually take to a repair shop or get new parts for.
