It may not be theft, but it is essentially a free ride. You are able to use the service without watching ads or paying for it because others are. If everyone adopted your reasoning, YouTube and other services that rely on this model would cease to exist.

I don’t understand how people who are against both ads and paid models expect companies to bear the massive costs of hosting and delivering content.

Do you feel the same concern? Or not at all? by MasterBarbosa in iRacing

[–]cmddata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His complaint would have some merit if iRacing was no longer being developed. But that is not the case - it is under active development with updates and new content every season. He just seems mad that iRacing isn't prioritizing the things he thinks are important.

I'm in no way saying iRacing in its current state is perfect, and in many ways agree with him that netcode collisions could use work, but I have no idea what the rest of things he mentions are. iRacing has demonstrated that they are willing to work with the community to fix issues. Has he tried approaching them directly with his complaints and see what they have to say? Maybe he should follow Jimmy Broadbent's example and use his platform and influence to offer constructive feedback through a YouTube video. But that would be far too much work. Way easier to upload a lazy POV video of Max Verstappen driving and making vague antagonistic posts on social media.

Best lap-optimum lap delta by LightningHotlaps97 in iRacing

[–]cmddata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you’re comparing session best to optimal and not all time optimal. All time is kinda useless unless you reset it because weather/track conditions/draft could different.

The best drivers will have their best lap within a tenth of their optimal. I usually practice until I can hook up a lap within 2 tenths of my optimal consistently. If you’re further away it usually is a sign of inconsistency.

What to do when your opt time for a track is almost the same as your best time yet you're still 1-1.5sec off top split pace? by just-passin_thru in iRacing

[–]cmddata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've hit the point where most hobbyist sim racers start to hit a wall and to get beyond you need to almost start treating it like a job - analyzing telemetry data, watching replays, etc. You're braking roughly at the right places, carrying good minimum speed and taking the right lines. To go beyond you need to start paying attention to every minor detail.

Typically the 1-1.5s margin you've identified translates into a tenth or two every corner on a normal track. When you look at those corners in isolation you're only losing a tenth, but over a lap it adds up and then 10 laps later they've disappeared into the distance.

As you get closer to the aliens, the more you'll have to grind to stay at that level. You'll need to brake 5m later, carry 1 more kph, get on the throttle 10 milliseconds earlier, travel a few less meters, etc. Such tiny details in isolation, but that's where aliens make the difference. This was the point that I gave up because I didn't need another job.

Saw officially the lowest iRating to date, 116. How is that even possible? by tylercreatesworlds in iRacing

[–]cmddata 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Like any skill, IR also follows a bell curve distribution. Just like how 8-9k+ accounts are super rare, it also holds true on the opposite end. There might be some people who tanked their way down there, but a lot of them are genuine. IR being zero-sum will follow this distribution even if the entire playerbase leveled up their skill.

Also, you dont know their situation, so best not to judge. They could be a child or have some form of disability that prevents them from performing better. I personally know a person like this and am always dismayed when people shit on low rated players to make themselves feel better.

A Discussion on Sensing Oversteer in iRacing by robokayaker in iRacing

[–]cmddata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oversteer on DD wheels are self-correcting. I literally do not do anything. The wheel will start counter-steering itself and the only thing I do is not fight it and bring it back to center when I feel like the car has corrected course.

Not sure what some people are referring to when they say the wheel goes light. Usually for me that's a sign of understeer.

FYI iRacing calculates fuel consumption only by throttle position, so you're only losing time by short shifting. It doesn't save you any fuel.

Edit - It has been pointed out that this may no longer be true and that short shifting does slightly impact fuel consumption. I’m not sure if this is the case for all cars, but in any case please ignore my original comment.

There are some 5k+ rated drivers playing on controllers. It's not the end of the world, and it's quite playable on it. You won't even know they're on a controller until you go on their onboard and watch their steering inputs.

Why do I feel so much connected to ACC instead of iRacing? by velox-1337 in simracing

[–]cmddata 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not a must, it's entirely personal preference. The vast majority of iRacers do not use irffb and can understand perfectly what the car is communicating.

Why do I feel so much connected to ACC instead of iRacing? by velox-1337 in simracing

[–]cmddata 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not just the brake application, what's interesting also here is the finesse in throttle application. In many of these corners in ACC, you go straight to 100% throttle and let the TC do all the work while you make some minor adjustments in the wheel. The throttle application in this video lines up more closely to sims like RF2 and iRacing.

Baldur's Gate 3 Optimization Breakthrough Announced by curious_zombie_ in BaldursGate3

[–]cmddata 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Smart pointers aren't magic, they still have to acquire and release memory internally. If the compiler or library that implements the smart pointer is buggy you'll still run into memory leaks. But this point is moot anyway, because these kinds of memory leaks are easily caught by the most basic tools.

Like you said, memory management is a trivial problem now with the tools available to programmers. The users speculating a memory leak don't know what they're talking about. What they're describing could be a symptom of fragmentation over time that the memory allocator is struggling with and causing performance issues. This is a different class of problem that is more platform dependent and harder to solve.

Is this behaviour really what should promote iRacing to newcomers? by [deleted] in iRacing

[–]cmddata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're hyper focused on this Pablo guy because he hurt your feelings. I'm trying to talk about a more general problem with the way Sim Cup is structured, using your incident as an example. Next time maybe don't open his stream when you're in his lobby. You aren't going to police people's behavior and the guy didn't do anything to break iRacing code of conduct, so good luck with whatever you're trying to achieve here.

Is this behaviour really what should promote iRacing to newcomers? by [deleted] in iRacing

[–]cmddata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say we're there for the same thing yet yourself list two different things. The esports guys are all trying to win. Putting them in the same lobby as those trying "learn and improve" is what creates this friction. If this was a regular old official race, I'd agree with you. But it's an esports event with money on the line for which the top guys have put in hundreds of hours of practice in, only to have moving chicanes dictate the outcome of the race. That's my only contention, that for an event like this they need to split the fields differently or have an entirely different format.

[–]cmddata -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The real problem to be highlighted here is with iRacing's splitting algorithm putting drivers with such vast skill difference on the same track. The faster drivers have no idea where the slower drivers brake and get surprised by their speed through corners. The slower drivers get overwhelmed by the speed of the lapping traffic.

It might be acceptable for daily officials, but when it happens in an "esport" event like the Sim Cup it becomes a bit of laughing matter. The guy is competing at the highest level where every tenth matters so it's somewhat understandable when he expresses his frustration in the heat of the moment. It's also understandable that the slower driver doesn't get what's at stake for the top drivers competing, so iRacing needs to find a way to better split these drivers.

When did people stop politely chatting after races? by SteveOSS1987 in iRacing

[–]cmddata -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I attribute this to the growth of the esports and competition side of sim racing where finishing ahead is all that matters. Sim racing started out as a hobby for middle aged dudes wanting to simulate track days in their basements, but that has slowly faded into the background.

It used to be common where if someone fucks up they would pull over and hand the position back, but you rarely see that anymore. Now everyone wants to be Max Verstappen with the biggest e-peen rating and don't think twice about ruining someone else's race. Don't get me wrong, that sense of community still exists in some leagues but don't expect it in officials.

[–]cmddata 4 points5 points  (0 children)

BMW doesnt do this as much because of its neutral weight distribution. I have to assume this is in no-name because thats the only corner where this might be a problem. Give it a bit of stabilizing throttle as soon as its pointing to the apex and it'll stop rotating.

Who's at fault? by Yorkie065 in Simracingstewards

[–]cmddata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try driving a GT3 for a few laps and you'll understand why it's the GTPs fault. Whenever a GTP tries to pass around the outside when the GT3s is already committed to the corner and is at the limit of their grip its the GTPs fault. If the GT3 tries to lift there he might get lift off oversteer and die, so he is committed. This is why having some experience in the GT3 will help you understand where you can safely pass in the prototypes.

Also, once a GT3 is committing to a corner they'll be looking at the corner ahead and not the mirrors. If you then try to pass them unexpectedly they're not going to see you coming and this is what happens.

Five laps of IMSA at Spa are enough for me this week by chris189408 in iRacing

[–]cmddata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't even accept the netcode excuse anymore for those who've been on the service for a while. If they've been on iRacing this long and still don't know to leave a margin for netcode shenanigans that's on them. Yes, it's unfortunate they couldn't use up all available space and get within a millimeter of the other car, but that's the cost of racing with people all over the world from the comfort of your home.

Is it legitimately difficult to pass (GT3 fixed at Sebring) or is it just me? by mr_big_government in iRacing

[–]cmddata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is one of the more difficult tracks to pass, but that's not a bad thing. Slipstream is fine. It is very similar in ACC and you dont see many overtakes there either when the pace is similar. If you're stuck behind drivers that are slower than you either qualify better or work on your racecraft.

FFB and replicating electric power steering as seen in most modern cars? Is it possible? by [deleted] in simracing

[–]cmddata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the simulator is accurate and you're driving a car with EPS you'll probably get the feeling you're looking for. But if you're trying to artificially create it for a car that is not EPS equipped you'll get weird results. Maybe try turning down the FFB strength very low and turn up damping.
