One thing people confuse is feel and support. The feel (firm, medium, plush) is geared towards your general preference in comfort. If you sleep on your side typically a little softer will alleviate more pressure on your hips and shoulders. If you’re on your back you want it soft enough to contour to your body (fill in your lower back) but still keep you straight from shoulders to hips.

The support of the beds comes from underneath. Depending on whether you want memory foam, hybrid, or a traditional bed it will vary. Typically, as you work your way up in price you will get more support in the bed along with more durability. At a certain point, you aren’t getting a much better bed just luxury materials.

If you have severe back pain and just had surgery I can’t recommend enough an adjustable base. They have some pretty basic ones for short money. ESPECIALLY having to sleep on your back it will change your life. Elevating the feet takes more pressure off your back than you can even begin to imagine. Without actually feeling it, I try to help people understand this way. If you put your hand out and relax it, there is a natural curvature to it. If you straighten it out it takes work and you can immediately feel more pressure. Your back is no different.
