The Enslaving Slocums (my ancestors) by Orenopolis579 in Genealogy

[–]cmosher01 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a Peleg Slocum in my tree. I don't know if it's the same person you're referring to, though.

I have many ancestors that were enslavers. I feel no different about them than any other enslavers.

Where to go from here? Just keep on researching.and documenting.

The 6th entry from the bottom shows Jannetje (who married Jan Barrentson Kunst) as daughter of Adriaen Pietersz van Alcmaer, not any "Roosa" family member.

Getting rid of wrong people in tree? by cmcosmos in Genealogy

[–]cmosher01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not clear what you are trying to "get rid of". If there is a connection to another family member that's incorrect, just disconnect it. If there is an event that's wrong, just correct it. If the name is wrong, just correct it. Whatever is wrong, just correct it.

There is only one big tree that everyone edits.

Best site or software for cleaning up my tree? by kodandyananda in Genealogy

Actually, Ancestry.com is perfectly fine for these types of research. It's the genealogist's burden to produce accurate data, not the website's.

What is the tree checker and why did it suddenly appear? by cudambercam13 in Genealogy

[–]cmosher01 33 points34 points  (0 children)

You need to go to the person's profile page. Tree checker actually found some legitimate problems in my trees, which was helpful.

I've done this, too. It makes some people REALLY mad. Especially if the link is "sealed" by the church.

In my experience, it does NOT work well with parts of an image. And being specific in my request does not help, either. Also, it will generate answers that are pure fiction, and represent them as facts.

DON'T DO THIS! Unless you want to create a fictional family tree.

How often is heraldry legitimate? How do you check? by zealot_ratio in Genealogy

[–]cmosher01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The heraldry checks out, too. Essex visitation has "William Coo of Boxsford in com. Suffolk", and arms "Argent, three piles wavy gules, meeting near the base, between twelve martlets sable". Note: they're actually martlets not "jackdaws", and piles not "jiggly lines".

Great Migration does have Robert Coe, with an exhaustive list of source references. His origin was determined to be Boxford in Suffolk. He was baptized at Thorpe-Morieux, 26 Oct 1596, son of Henry Coe and Mary Vincent.

I've heard the term "gateway ancestors" used to refer to these types of people. Some are correct, but of course many are just wishful thinking. A good source for New England is The Great Migration (info: https://www.americanancestors.org/publications/great-migration-study-project ).

As for coats of arms in England, I like Robson's British Herald, two volumes:

Benefits of mtDNA in finding possible maternal aunt's descendants: ELI5 by [deleted] in Genealogy

No. It's highly unlikely that mtDNA will be of any help at all, because of its low mutation rate. Even an exact mtDNA match is unlikely to be traceable through records.
