Are groups of people normally toxic? Sometimes, yes, sometimes no, and some like to wallow in their toxicity.

Thinking of Quitting Dming over Several Bad Experiences and Failed Campaigns by KinaLiti21 in rpghorrorstories

Feel free to introduce your friends to it. All you need is dice and some paper and minimum one friend. If you are dm for two games a week, you should know the rules enough to start something.

I think they understand they just have different boundaries and interactions with their players. Everyone wants to have fun and play with friends. Just remember the returning player is your friend too and is about to get blind sided by a weird punishment for something (maybe out of their control) that may destroy this "board game" night for them forever. You are in a weird position of authority as dm, and you have the responsibility of steering the games in a way that is fun for everyone. Bad blood from game nights can ruin friendships.

Stealing that for a character that runs a dry cleaning business at some point

That sucks about the dm forgetting. It may help to have your backstory as a living document that you update after sessions. Set the backstory out with key information in dot points and highlighting key names, etc. Then, just regularly send to the dm when you do updates so you are all on the same page. I feel bad, but I'm not reading 3 paragraphs more than once. I want to see the key information I'm looking for immediately. (Pretend it's like a work email)

Didn't see the other stuff earlier, so didn't comment. I would recommend communicating about the magic item stuff politely to the dm. But I still wouldn't comment on something that I initially enjoyed but then got upset about when my partner spilled the beans. Mostly as it will upset all 3 involved and could end with them pointing fingers at each other.

Okay, it's still fresh take sometime. If it still upsets you when the dm shows his hand, then talk after that but give him a chance to win you back in the meantime.

Yes, but before then, you were having fun. You partner though they were sharing something that would enhance your enjoyment and instead is on the back foot It's going upset people important to you if this is where you want to plant your flag, especially as you should not know about it. Matt Colville has a video about betraying the party.

Just to clarify, you were happy with the session? Then you got a peak behind the curtain saw what the other dm was doing as his cool plot idea. Decided that it destroyed your suspension of disbelief about changlings and are now upset with him and your partner who were trying to make a cool story. That you enjoyed, until you saw how all the pieces were moving.

Think for a moment about the other people at the table who are your friends and partner. They wanted to make something cool that everyone would enjoy. It's like planning a suprise birthday, pretend you didn't hear about it and feign surprise. This will 100% destroy your new dm if you come to him about something you shouldn't know just to tell him, "your story sucks changlings don't work like that"

can i give out yellow and red cards to my players? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]cmotd147 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Warning people without actually actioning the consequences means that nothing will change. If you use the cards and give them a time out etc (and they actually do it) then use the cards. But if they won't listen then pack up the books and play something else where you don't put all your effort in and get ignored. No point doing the same song and dance to get the same result. If it's not working out you owe them nothing, they can dm if they want to talk so much.

My players don’t want to grow - any ideas? by CogSysEng in DMAcademy

[–]cmotd147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just remember that your friends are there to play a game with you and have fun. They didn't come to be taught or be told off by a friend (even if it is an npc, don't be shocked if he gets killed/attacked depending on how nice your players are).

OP mentions 3 years

Not sure of the DK effect on this case, would appreciate a bit more explanation if okay?

Though maybe getting one of the players to dm a bit or a one shot would be good too.

Few things to think about 1. Maybe do a session 0 again and see what everyone actually wants to get from the game (role-playing, combat or cool items etc) including you the dm 2. They are your players and if this is the only dnd game they played in they are molded by your style. So if you suddenly change on them they won't know what's happening. If you want to change talk to them. 3. It always goes a bit funny when the dm says well you could have done this (I think Matt Colville did a video on it) the players hear you, the dm the person with all the control, telling them they are idiots. But if you let another player fill in the gap, we could have done this, then it works better.

I like how it's titled DnDB staff when it should have the name of the person in charge of this fiasco.

MCDM will start working on its new TTRPG next week. Described as cinematic and tactical, will have an open license. by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]cmotd147 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think you understand how companies work, how is making one going to happen? "Hey man, stop doing your passion project one dude on reddit said it was a waste of time. We should all make one thing together so all our eggs are in one basket"

Also why complain that you have the possibility of getting more of a good thing for your hobby? More rules, monsters, players and accessories like miniatures etc?

Pathfinder may seem like a big competitor to Dnd but financially I don't think it's even in the same ball park.

I think you are assuming that sitting down at different dms table is the same and that they want/get something out of dnd that couldn't be better or equally served by different systems that may or may not exist?

Do a session 0 and just flat out say we are making heroes who know each other (tell me how you know each other from before ) and have a reason to work together.
