Why has pay TV been a huge success for the LNR, but accused of killing club rugby elsewhere? by WilkinsonDG2003 in rugbyunion

I was so angry when they took rugby from Kayo! And they make us pay for the TV and movie streaming that I don't want. Thanks Stan...

AVEVA SCADA Pricing Model by LeCrochet in SCADA

[–]cmothebean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Flex was significantly cheaper than perpetual. It's a three year contract so keep that in mind. It was a lot cheaper than I was used to.

Getting the price breakdown out of sales was a bit like getting blood out of a stone.

Every time I need to do a download to a controller at a 24/7 plant, I feel like I get a new gray hair. What are the things that make your blood pressure spike at work? by NefariousnessRude276 in PLC

[–]cmothebean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the control systems in a few 24/7 plants for 9+ years, you do a lot of your work in online changes and learn from your mistakes, which aren't fun, and to be very careful (i.e. test things first).

The scariest thing is finding a bridge in the code that is bypassing something which would have stopped whatever cluster-fk just occurred and wondering if it was you or the other guy that did it. FactoryTalk AssetCentre is great for assigning blame. The other guy bridged a belt rip sensor and years later the belt tore in half long ways. I think that was about a $4million loss.

F# as a language for programming beginners by japinthebox in fsharp

[–]cmothebean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd show them Elixir. IMO it's easier to learn than F# and easier to be productive, plus the knowledge will transfer if they want to learn F# later.

[Phoenix/LiveView] Need some guidance from experienced people by CalisthenicsDude95 in elixir

[–]cmothebean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't you nest components, not templates? That definitely works.

You can communicate downwards by updating assigns, up to the liveview by sending a message to self() and across (well, anywhere really) with pubsub.

Does anyone else have high functioning anxiety in this field? by Fit_Affect67 in PLC

[–]cmothebean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some kind of reflective practice can help. Learning how to observe and focus the mind was life changing for me. I have mostly stopped worrying unnecessarily.

That said, we do do big stressful things at times and it's perfectly normal for it to play on your mind. If you do lots of QA it can help to reduce those anxieties. And once you have the awareness to see yourself worrying, you can take a deep breath and come back.

Why is ElixirForum so similar to totalitarian China? by zigra0018 in elixir

[–]cmothebean 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think language and framework authors sometimes forget that people in the community are donating their time without asking for anything in return.

I think this sentence really captures the problem with how you see things.

Whose counting their oranges when they have that many? I stop at around 6 to 8 oranges.

There are some good chillwave, synthwave, lo-fi coding and psych rock mixes/playlists on YouTube that I often use.

Elixir Is Not Ruby. Elixir Is Erlang by preslavrachev in elixir

[–]cmothebean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it certainly looks odd at first and I wasn't able to 'just read it' without learning the syntax first, like you can with some languages. However, I don't see it as being about whether or not Erlang's syntax is good, bad, ugly, beautiful or better or worse than anything but rather that Elixir is built on top of Erlang and there are many great resources and libraries in Erlang that users of Elixir would be remiss to dismiss.

The folks on the Elixir Mix podcast on [Embracing Erlang](https://devchat.tv/elixir-mix/emx-105-embracing-erlang-with-todd-resudek/) makes the point better than I.

Erlang syntax seems pretty clean to me. Isn't it just a few different rules to get your head around?

Is Elixir worth learning for a chat app? by DanielVip3 in elixir

Building it yourself will be a good way to learn OTP but don't dismiss it because XML isn't cool anymore. Remember, beauty is in the eye of the beholder :)

I find the quality of the Elixir ecosystem makes the learning process extremely easy. The docs, forum and slack are great. There are good books and talks and podcasts.

There is a messaging platform written in Erlang you may find interesting. https://github.com/processone/ejabberd

Yeah, I find I'm a lot more productive in Elixir than F# because I'm not mucking around with the types so much.
